The Sloughi is a different breed to the Saluki, the Sloughi originates from North Africa and is always smooth, the Saluki of course from the east. If you know both breeds well they do not look alike. My old Sloughi was bred in the UK, he didnt work but had tremendous stamina and a very high prey drive. They are highly sensitive dogs though, so dont respond to raised voices or harsh treatment. Yes, the top dog is shown as a Sloughi but has the Smooth Saluki 6 times in his pedigree (the Smooth Saluki was used mistakenly 30 years ago but some of the Sloughi breeders continue to to inbreed on this line).

Well this is the argument he always presents regarding 'limited samples'. The genetic studies are ongoing so time will tell on that one. I tend to go with the scientific evidence rather than something based on second hand information from Terence Clark (who as you probably can tell I dont have a huge amount of time for . I also dont think that the Sloughi or Saluki actually look alike when you get to know both breeds. The native people certainly in Morocco who hunt with Sloughis would definately not agree that they are the same breed as the Saluki either (and that's from people I know ha

To be fair to Sir Terence Clark, his thoughts and idea's regarding Salukis and Sloughis come directly from the native people who hunt with them. Those that he spoke to make no distinction between them. I'm not sure how seriously to take the findings regarding the relantionship of the various Oriental Sighthounds at this point as their samples were very limited. This study was also presented to us at the conference using the findings to point to toward origins and birth place of domestic dog, south east Asia Well this is the argument he always presents regarding 'limited sample

Meant to add, you may also be interested in some native Indian sighthound breeds which can be found here: http://www.dogsindia.com/indian_breeds.htm Largely unknown of even in India although there are people out there now trying to educate people about these ancient breeds, and who are working to preserve them.

Sir Terence Clark has a very out of date view on the heritage of these dogs. His ideas have long been proved wrong with DNA testing regarding his theory that Sloughi and Saluki and all those type of dogs are the same. Live and let live, thats what I use to live by! I never new much about the travelling community(and still don't), I grew up in canada and hadn't seen or heard of travellers until I moved to scotland! I was warned by people with salukis to watch my saluki's when walking them near travellers! I thought that was terrible and wasn't going to judge people I had never met. live and let live, they weren't bothering me! I did and do get annoyed at the rubbish and shit that was/is left all over the place and the campylobacter infection my dogs seemed to get when they were staying where i walked. But

Thanks, I know the parents are a good indication but I was wondering, being a cross I suppose he could end up small like the whippet or tall like the greyhound or an average of the three! thought his present height and age may give an idea of final height

i was takin the piss no you need to know breeding and heights realy what happens if he was a deerhound x if his parents were round 23 you'll probably be looking at that for him I was taking the piss too my deerhound cross was twice the size at that age, Initially I thought he wasn't going to make the 23" Was wondering if you could make a prediction from age and present hight? If you didn't know the breeding? He is the only dog that I have known his parents most of my lurchers have been rescues So I know roughly what he should make but as I said I was doubting weather he would

That would be a hell of an acheivement if he is only 19" at 5mths? What if you didnt know the breeding, would you be able to make an educated guess? Just wondering? I think his parents were about 23" collie/whippet/grey. Will he be the same size then?

Just wondering if people could guesstimate a height my pup will reach? I did think he was going to be really small but he seems to have taken a stretch. He is 5mths and 19" wonder what other thought?

Are 1st cross saluki/grehounds always smooth? I think my boy is saluki/greyhound, he is 28", I was told saluki collie but thought he was too big for a saluki/collie, so I was wondering if what others thought? Can he be a Saluki/;Greyhound?
