Stocking the woods with game
moley replied to GazDavison_91's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
you don,t need syndicates paying silly money, get yourself a few traps, make a few feeders, the most expensive thing is corn , buy it at harvest time and pay cash , you will get it a bit cheaper , you can feed the ponds with sweepings up or old corn for now, ducks arn,t fussy ,don,t go daft, just see how it goes, don,t expect too much at first, feed ,cover and vermin control is the most important things for wild game -
all this shit about a couple of fox cubs, some numpties put posts up about trapping jays in fenn traps and f**k all said, it beggars belief this internet at times

it was a form of torture in scotland , tied out and left to the midgies, we have them fairly bad around here from about now til octoberish, depending on weather, theres times you cannot leave the house without mozzie net or repellent and leaving the doors open at dusk can be a nightmare, we often prey for wind to keep them at bay

fenn traps only half catching
moley replied to trenchfoot's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
if your happy with what your doing kenny , then you carry on, i have trapped tens of thousands of rats and other various varmints over the years and found that the size of the tunnel is vital to consistently get clean catches, because of how a fenn operates, meaning it jumps as it goes off resulting in a possible foul catch , i would be interested to know how often you have recorded a rat or anything else for that matter, foul caught, i used to use no covering at all in building like you described , but found too many live rats the following morning because they were foul caught , a simple wire -
fenn traps only half catching
moley replied to trenchfoot's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
if your catching by the back end , you need to make the rats hit the plate with thier front feet, not their back feet, so either a jump stick front and back or set your trap more fickle, the laws covering traps and tunnels are a bit scetchy at the best of times, but setting in open buildings cannot be counted as a tunnel , i,m sure the laws have just recently bin re-worded , fenn have a guide line for setting a positioning fenns , in it , it says there should be no more than half inch clearence as the trap jumps, we all get foul catches from time to time , but placing in the correct sized tu -

i used to loose about 50 traps year to badgers, cannot think i ever had a dog dig one out and take it, had farmers take em out and re set , thinking i wouldn,t know, lol

badgers tend to take them away or pull the mole out there and then leaving the trap close too, foxes usually roll in them and leave them but this time of year , foxes will take them to thier cubs, so it could be either like bry said

So I dyed and waxed some traps
moley replied to JohnGalway's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
depends what colour you paint them , if your using luminous green or yellow, then they will stand out, if you use leaf green or brown in matt paint , they won,t stand out, i try not to use rusty traps, they are slow to spring and don,t hit as hard as a good clean trap, i use dyed traps for rabbits even tho they are covered, it saves the trap from rusting and keeps them firing nice and crisp -
Trap performance of the trapline mole trap
moley replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
its a bit fiddly to set , but that could be lack of use or fat fingers, apart from that , its a good little trap and seems to kill nice and fast, handy on loose soil or along paving slabs -
totally agree john, some companies and most postal services in the uk are crap, everyone seems to require a signature these days, how the hell are we supposed be in to sign for it ,when we need to go out to work to afford to buy it, i left a note this morning asking them to leave a parcel in the shed, the delivery man wrote on my note , that it required a signature, don,t know whether they are gonna try again or have taken it somewhere else or what, f*****g muppets

no it doesn,t work as you already know, they chew thier way out , thats the reason for using a whip , it keeps them up and not able to chew, you are just about answering your own question

moley replied to a topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
i know you bin in woodga shed cos i was in it last night and came away with next to nowt, mind he was hiding stuff from me, i spotted some eylets and wire in the cupbord next to the sugar and coffee -
had 2 buns in a purse net before, had 2 rats in fenns loads of times, pegandgun that used to be on here, told me he has had 2 buns in a wire a few times, same as you only wrapped round 1 leg
-
had it myself , bet you ain,t had 4 young rabbits in 1 mk6 fenn or 2 young in 1 bodygrip, i have also had rabbits knocked about while in snares and in drop boxes
-
they have probably gone to the other side
-
tube trap, kania and doc traps , all over priced and not very practical in most trapping situations, fenns are expensive enuff , imagine replacing all the 200 mk6 fenns i use , i would bankrupt the boss

Any one done this with a nomol trap
moley replied to 3175darren's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
had a small bitch stoat in a duffus once, set in a mole run as you would, had a about 3 weasels over the years -
i seem to do ok with the mk6,s, i do get the odd live bunny , but not that many and a stronger spring would probably fix that problem, also a slight adjustment to the jaw shape would help,i have had some very big buck rabbits in winter , dead and hardly moved the trap, i have had dead mink in 6,s , but most were on drown wires just to make sure , i would never set a mk6 for mink without the backup of a drowning rig
