Birds to roost in smaller copse
moley replied to a topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
don,t matter where they roost so long as they are in the right place at the right time ,sounds good if they are in both woods during the day , you don,t want everthing in one drive -
Half the fun's working in the dark, but how good's your outfit and is it hands free?. You could possibly scan the field first, but if the light you look at is bright you could spoil your own dark adjusted sight. Possibly however it could be of use. I've never seen one far less used one. i use a night owl explorer g2, handy bit of kit and very compact,i just check the ground over before i drop the net so i,m not wasting time setting a net for nothing

if the place is closed for 5 days , then get your prebaited boxes out there a week before so once the park is shut , you are ready to set your traps , i would lace the place up with trap boxes and once set ,check them every couple of hours taking the gun along for any opportunities, good luck

reccy your ground and see if you have early or late feeders, make sure the net is the rightway round i.e. do you approach from the left or right of the field you are going to net, saves needless walking up and down.most of all enjoy it.all the best i have to say i don,t give a bugger which way round the net is and niether do the rabbits, best to just get it set then drive the field, sometimes a set is only approachable from one way because of wind, water or any number of things , you cannot be buggering about trying to get your net so the pins are on the side that the rabbits come from you

His newer books seem to presume that we all have 5 acres of land to put pigs and sheep in. The "meat" one etc. Im not saying he is totally for the rich, and im not saying he has "totally" sold out, but in comparison to the cook on a wild side series and book, he just seems to be chasing the mighty pound now , when i would prefer him to stick to his "roots". IMO if he carries on in the way he is , he will be no different to any of the tv chefs. you mean you havn,t got 5 acres of lawn outside your mansion and some little peasant oik to mow it every saturday?, good god man , where you dr

i think the idea is exellent ,you got a tunnel and trap all in one ,you can just set it and then chuck a load of weeds over it and you got a mink set, but like you say , theres room for improvement, i think the size is very good cos anything entering cannot bugger about inside and will have to jump on the pan and not over it, the trap bit is far enuff in that only something small enuff can enter and get caught , the trigger is a bit harsh , but it does work ,apparently, i suppose its like anything , once you get used to setting it , its easy, just like the bodygrip trap

i have gone onto the protector sidekick , just a bit smaller and still holds plenty of bait

(Moles; I examined the till and I'm now a bit happier that she is set about as fine as an out of the box can be. I set it on a bit of an impulse and never had time to f*ck about) setting a trap correctly is very important to get a swift and humane death ,it should never be clased as f*****g about

i know a bloke thats caught half grown rats in em , so you can make em fickle, if your that bothered about your fingers then use a stick
-
of course he,ll get one , those pipe traps do work , never had a mink , but they work on other stuff, apparently

just like tomo said ,get yourself some bird boxes made , just the right size for a fenn to sit in the bottom, bigger than normal hole ,fasten them right up high out of reach ,only accessable by a ladder, fill with wheat and forget about them for a few days , rebait as needed, then when our getting a good hit , set your traps, check them every few hours for a day or two , then rebait and start again joe public thinks there nest boxes , made sure the fenn is fixed to the inside of the box so anything not quite dead cannot get away or out of the box , it don,t look good , when a squig climbs i

that egg has bin broken on the end , no self respecting corvid is going to stab at the end of an egg, because it takes a fair bit of force to smash into a duck egg and the egg would just move as it was whacked, all corvids smash eggs by hitting them in the middle and at the top so the force is stopped by the ground it is sat on , unless its bin laid end up , highly unlikely most small mammals will chew at the pointed end of an egg, so its more likely to be a hedgie , rat or stoat

one for the forward thinkers

Cheers foxy. I didnt use them for my first season and i hated it, my hands were soooo cold it was scary. After that i used the waterproof "gardening" gloves from the poundshop. They are good at keeping hands clean but didnt do much at all for cold. Ive just got some neoprene gloves and used them yesterday for the first time. They kept my fingers warm but were too thick-it was a faff on setting the duffuses. Ive never found gloves a problem for leaving smells!?! i use gloves for all my trapping , they are the yellow rubber ones with a white cuff ,stink to high heaven at first of, er , -
another good reason to avoid insect jobs , i hate wasps
