I would question the legality of that set in the second photo down, the legislation covering spring traps is meant to safeguard non target species and any dog or anything else for that matter happning to have a sniff at that burrow would be in for a sore one, or at least thats the way it looks in the photo, apologies if im wrong. that trap is set within the overhang of the burrow , thats what the law states ,i,m not going to put up pictures of illegaly set traps , am i ? give me a bit of credit , this is my livelihood, a fenn can also twat dogs or other non target species same as a sn

well as you know i run about 100 bg,s at a time in certain situations and find that tho they work in burrow mouths they are not as good as fenns , for other situations like under fences , thru cover etc , they are far better that fenns, i wouldn,t waste my time and effort setting them if i didn,t think they worked better , e.cook , you should give them a try , you might just change your mind Hi Moley, i have tried and tested BGs in place of Fenn traps on numerous occasions, at one point running just under 200 at a time and i didnt get as good results as with the Fenn traps i was using

this is why i used hob ferrets , there were 4 hob ferrets used on each day , same farm just a couple of fields apart , 152 and 81

there you go , poor sod was caught by the backend but a drowning wire put pay to my bad trap setting, trap reset and the log
-
there was a thing on horse and country the other day similar to this , the guy recommended to stand against a wall , hedge gap sounds a better idea

nice to see theres some common sense comming to the for , its not a big bed of roses being at it full time , we have to produce results , not so much now for me, but when i was self employed it was numbers , pure and simple , now i get paid regardless but i still enjoy doing a good job and getting numbers

it could be a couple of weeks before the mink returns , be patient , i have a few traps out at the moment , i caught one first morning in a bodygrip set under a log , about 5 ft from a baited pocket , so its worth setting where you think minky will travel

for once jbs , i agree with ya , this land is run by a few lads just after a bit of sport at thier own expence and it gets sour when numpties go in and start theiving ,

fair point , but we are supposed to move forward and these contraptions are a step back , ridiculous claims like they set at the correct hight every time is utter bollocks , there is no such correct hight , a snare is set at the correct hight according to conditions like weather and land type , and a pro does not want to carry half a hundred weight of steel around the fields the inventor of the snare was probably a caveman so his contempories were hardly going to critisized his stuff Unfortunately moley you make too much sense. Worse still, it's sense earned from experience. If you wa

TRAPPING (stoats and weasels)
moley replied to dogs-n-natives's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
i don,t run stoat traps now , but when i did , after a catch , i used to just queeze the glands onto the underside of the tunnel or rail , to stop the rain washing it off , one stoat was good for a few traps if you didn,t queeze to hard, the last tunnel got the carcase -
look at the pic you can see its had a tunnel over it i cannot see where a tunnel was, have you ex-ray vision ?
-
simple things work best , i often used to dig a tunnel thru a bank or into a bank and make either a straight thru tunnel or an elbow ( favoured by american mink trappers) no boxes to carry about and just looks like a rabbit hole to joe public , good post

i have snared one or two rabbits but i,m certainly not as good as some of the other lads on here , i think you got to keep changing the method to suit the place and to stop getting stale , i get sick if i,m ferreting day after day and want a change , same with trapping and other control methods nice to do summat different every now and then, this snow is really buggering the job up at the moment , i,m having to spend all morning chasing rabbits about with the dogs and shotty , then all afternoon on fox drives , such is life

They never tire or need feeding do they,do you use a setter for the body grips?i have to ,is there a setter for fenns, there ought to be.theres a lot of gorse near me and ifind a BG on a stand 4 inch high is deadly ,i seem to do better with them in the air as they have to hop through ,makeing them more committed than they would be if they were just creeping through the run and the trap was on the ground .Where i live is overrun with badgers and foxs ,so its a race to get there first ,i find that rabbits are safer in a trap than a snare, ive not worked out yet, if its because there dead, or the

got some s h 10x 40 zeiss off ebay a couple of years ago for £385 , just got some swarovski 10x 25 compacts for £345 new , great little things and handy pocket size , most of the lads on the estate have got them now for day work
