  1. Same thing's happened to kids. Years ago they worked up chimneys and down mines, and were fed gravel and sump water. They were fit as fleas. Now, they sit around with computers and games consoles, eat MacD's and crisps, and are as fat as a house side.
  2. No, they're inbred scum if they're chavs. Though to be honest, I've never seen anyone who wore Realtree in public who looked like they'd got an IQ in double figures.
  3. Course you would, Colg.
  4. Fair enough. PM me if you change your mind. Bargain at what you're asking, but I can't be arsed to buy the lot then sell on the stuff I don't want
  5. How much do you want for the Preston 10' rod, mate?
  6. And BNP bollocks stays? Madness.
  7. Been there, done that. Normal maggots aren't too bad, get 'Lancaster Bomber' flies, big black slow, easily swatted. Pinkies give you Greenbottles though..... Not been so bad since I've had house ferrets though......

  9. I agree. It's what people often don't appreciate: most genetics is about probability, not certainty.
  10. 'The genetics stuff' IS the basics. That's what the selective breeding that you're doing is.
  11. Yes, I agree. And it's good to see someone appreciates the difference between characteristics, which can be inherited, and ability which isn't. What breeding 'worker to worker' does is concentrate those characteristics. There'll still be a range of abilities in the offspring.

    I blame the teachers.....
  13. It's difficult to seriously debate with someone who seems to think that 'books' are the source of all evil, but i'm a bit of a stubborn bugger, so I'll try. 'Told face to face'....yes I was. 'read it in books'....not 'books', scientific journals. These contain the methods and conclusions of the original research. In order to be published in a scientific journal the work has to be 'peer reviewed' by other scientists who might not neccessarily agree with the writer. I didn't say, and never have, that breeding 'worker to worker' you don't get workers. I said that I couldn't see a
  14. Wikipedia may well be 'people's opinions'. But I didn't learn my genetics from Wikipedia, I learned it from the people that do original research into the subject. I reccommended Wikipedia to you for the reasons stated in my last post.
  15. Because you reckon you get the effect from one generation. Most people breed for several generations to get the standard they want. Yes, I can explain how selective breeding works. However, you've not accepted anything I've told you about genetics up to now, so I'm not convinced it's worth the effort. Try Wikipedia.
  16. Which is a perfectly sensible course of action. As you'll be aware another of my hobby-horses is unneeded breeding . Doesn't answer my point re selective breeding and how it works though.
  17. Yes, we have. So what is your explanation of the statement you made earlier that the number of generations you selectively breed make no difference to the working ability of the offspring. Because that's not how genetics re selective breeding works. And I'm not sure you can construct a valid argument from one piece of anecdotal evidence.
  18. Because if you selectively breed (as in for working ability) you increase the chance of that ability being enhanced in every generation you breed, ergo mere breeding cycles = more enhancement. That's if hunting ability is genetic. If it isn't, it doesn't matter. Which is what your post seems to be saying.
  19. Misses the point. Which is the question 'is working ability bred or learned somehow?' If anything, your post rather tends to the 'learned' side of the argument. You clearly do a lot more ferretting than the guys you took out, your ferrets are therefore much more experienced, and better at it. It isn't 'bred in' as you've only bred them rarely. As far as whin's comment about the ranking system, totally agree with the incomprehensible Scot....it's bloody embarrassing having the moniker 'extreme hunter' when the only 'hunting' I do is on the local lake or river after the Friday night
  20. That's what i was about to say Kay Well dont say t before you do! Its rubbish, i've read it all, and the topic has changed through out. Still stayed a good topic, and no one has threatened anyone but a home ferret is totally different to a working ferret. I have both, simple............... I will invite anybody out with me who has a home ferret. We will take yours and one of my workers....... This is the old 'nature vs. nurture conundrum. Is a decent worker born or does it learn as it goes along? Here's my take: I firmly believe that the only thing that li
  21. Yep. No doubt we'll get you profound wisdom re ferret genetics sometime.....
  22. Don't hunt, keep pet ferrets, go fishing once a week all year round. If some people are offended by that, then tough. I didn't ask for the moniker 'extreme hunter', it was given me by the website, for being a gobby bugger. I agree with the sentiments Mal and RFYL have stated. (Try not to fall over with shock there, RFYL.... ).
