  1. Waidmann, I don't live in Germany, but have lived in The Netherlands near the border of Germany until I moved to the USA. I now am in North Carolina. Were you in the army? I absolutely agree, but with the abundance of wild boars at this moment, hunters who have not been hunting much are also recruited. Even older hunters. I know of a few hunting accidents with dogs. I have 11 Teckel of which 4 are 12-15 yrs old and have been retired from hunting. Here in the US, we have another problem..... coyotes! The bells are known to attract coyotes from far distances. A few beagles with bells h
  2. Waidmann, I feel there is no need for bells also, but some of the German hunters I know (in mid-Germany - area of Frankfurt/Darmstadt) believe it is safer for their dogs with one on when there are unknown hunters partaking in the Treibjagd. I have a nylon collar with plastic clip for my standard Teckels (with my cell phone number) that will come loose if they get stuck underground. There have been several times that one of my dogs came back without collar. No Gonetoearth, I don't hunt with hawks. Why should I, because falconry is absolutely NOT one of the main applications of hunting
  3. Waidmann, bells are used in Germany nowadays in "Treibjagd" on wild boars. Just to warn the surrounding hunters a dog is coming to prevent hunting accidents, but that's the only hunting application I know of.
  4. Start out with obedience - obedience - obedience.... before you take your dog out hunting. Like Waidmann already said, if he's on some scent line, he should be loud. If he's not, he should go back to you upon command. If he's mute on scent, he's worthless for hunting. No need for bells!!
  5. I use 1-2 pharaoh hounds for Cottontail rabbits here. Dachshunds (Teckels) flush the rabbits, pharaohs catch, kill and retrieve the rabbits. Gotta watch that the Teckels don't steal the rabbits from them before retrieving to me. Lennard, heb je zelf Podenco's? Mijn pharao's komen van NL.
  6. Something went wrong with the posts.... I'd like to add that I use my teckels here to hunt cottontail rabbits (don't go underground) together with pharaoh hounds. Some of the dogs I bred are used for turkey hunting, but the main hunting task in this country is tracking shot whitetail deer.
  7. Very nice pics, fish! Been hunting with my Teckels (from European hunting bloodlines) since 1998 here in North Carolina now. They hunt just about anything and -imo- have endless applications in hunting. Teckels even retrieve ducks out of the water.
  8. Sounds like the dog needs more exercise to get the darn energy out of her system or she's rebelling against boredom. In both cases -no offense to you- she might need more attention from you. In that I mean for you to do some kind of activity with her at a regular basis. I am a firm believer that only a very small percentage of dogs are truly 'psycho'. The majority of troubled dogs is just not well understood. I personally think this behavior is fairly normal for dogs. My pharaohs and dachshunds do it to me too at times just to tease me. It's as unpleasant with the dachshunds, for my knees do
  9. Not only do dogs have more receptors per square inch or square cm in the nose epithelium than people, they also have many more different types of receptors and last but not least an intricate labyrinth in the nose cavity, which induces whirls of air while breathing air in. Some hunting dogs are also able to continuously breath air in while breathing out through the mouth. (Some people are also capable of doing this "circular breathing": eg Australian aboriginals while playing the didgeridoo) The circulation of air in the nasal cavity of dogs enables the slightest amount of scent particles to b
  10. Their scenting ability is much more developed than ours and they can smell the hormones and other substances we excrete in our sweat glands. So in addition to body language, they can smell our emotions or even physical condition. I am sure you've heard of dogs that could detect cancers or predict seizures in epileptic patients.
  11. LOVE the interaction between different breed!!!! Great photos! I hunt my standard smooth Teckels with my Pharaoh Hounds on Cottontail rabbits here. Teckels flush rabbits out of the brush, Pharaohs catch and kill them. And I..... just collect the rabbits....
  12. I just like to see dogs hunt for the sake of it. I used to carry a gun but then got hooked on watching them do it for themselves. If anything does flush id rather it be to a lurcher. the bell idea sounds good cos sometimes you cant see these teckels either though the bitch is startin to speak on fresh sent. Threbb, just start with obedience training before you run her off-leash again. They have to be socalled 'spurlaut' (=loud on scent). Teckels should be loud on scent! It's one of the main requirements for hunting. My advice is to NEVER put any bell or a metal buckle collar on your Tecke
