Yes - I've met a couple of those and they do seem lovely little dogs There is one where we live and we've done some control work tgether - the couple who own her are really putting in the work with her and she's a real credit to them.

Not sure if this is the right place to post - but I found a small rough coated red bitch this morning. She was wearing a red webbing collar - but it was filthy! She's got a really dense, hard coat - thick all over but for the head and muzzle. About 11" at the shoulder if that. Not sure how old she is - but her eyes were looking a bit cloudy and she was going a bit grey about the muzzle - maybe somewhere between 8 and 11. She was doing her best to get run over in Croston, near Leyland and she was also in season. I did some asking around but nobody seemed to know anything - apart fro

Years ago, in a working dog mag, there were pictures of wheatens from even longer ago called Freecrow Hero and Bronlow Bob (think that's right - apologies if spelling is totally wrong) They seemed broader in the skull and more powerful in the jaw than a lot of wheatens I've seen recently. Is it likely they had some bull in them?

Does anyone know if there are curly coats out there that are working gundogs? I don't mean dogs bred for the show ring that happen to have the working gundog cert. I mean dogs that pick up throughout the shooting season on ordinary shoots. Also, if it is still possible to find such a dog, can anyone recommend a breeder who might let me come and see them working and generally ask lots of questions? I've read up all I can, but there is only so much you can get from a book and it is just 1 person's opinion after all! I'm looking for a dog that I can pick up with and maybe also compet

Best of luck - however you decide! You are obviously very pleased with your collie and as you know him inside out & know about his background too - and enjoy working with him - that seems to be a big plus to me. Hope it all goes to plan for you

Is the Irish Terrier used in any way as a working dog? Have you seen it work? What is his temperament like - especially with other dogs? What bloodlines is he from? Surely there are so many different shapes and sizes and types of bull terriers out there and so many greyhounds that it stands to reason there are brilliant, average and really useless bull-greyhounds? Maybe the problem is those who are knocking out litters with no thought beyond 'okay - got a greyhound - got a bully - job done!' and selling them to clueless homes just to line their own pockets and feel all 'expert' coz they have bred a litter? Great picture! I took my old dog to the game fair at Broughton one year and a bloke stopped me with his young lad and said he was a nice looking dog and kept asking if he was game. The lad kept butting in saying 'Dad...Dad' and the bloke told him to be polite and wait until he'd finished talking to me. Eventually, the lad just tugged his dad's sleeve and said........... "Dad - WHY do you keep asking if that dog is GAY?!" Just thought I'd share that - it made me laugh!

I thought that back in the 1980s or thereabouts, a group of 'enthusiasts' (who just happened to be into dog shows) took it upon themselves to look into why predominantly white-bodied / hound-marked terriers of all shapes & sizes were called 'Jack Russells' and so they researched the life of Parson Jack Russell in Devon and began to breed for a dog that looked like the sort of ideal hunt terrier that the parson had envisaged. I'm working with my young dog. He came to me at 10 months old and he's now 17 months and we are making good progress. He's definitely not gunshy and will go through thick cover confidently. He will jump on command and will sit and wait on the other side. All I'm after with him is a dog I can take beating with me - nothing more. He's also learnt to follow hand signals and whistle, so I walk in a line and send him out either side and turn him. Hello, I'm new... I'm just happy when outside and seeing dogs work. I love training dogs and finding out about different dogs and types of dog work. I'm not fussy - I'll watch a pack of hounds - or coursing (once upon a time) - or gundogs - or sheepdogs..........anything where I can enjoy watching dogs be dogs. What really gets to me is how many dogs are bred with no real thought behind it and how many gullible people will buy a particular breed or cross of strain because 'fat bloke in the pub' said they were great - and then 'get rid' of it (what a lovely expression) when it doesn't l

Raw chicken wings, sometimes raw tripe with biscuit and chopped up past sell-by date veg. Occasionally sardines and also just scraps and leftovers. It's the first dog I've had where I just thought 'no-he's a dog - forget fancy food' and he has muscles on muscles and shedloads of energy.
