  3. does free lofting a bird make any difference to how it acts or its attitude? also once freelofted does it always need to be that way or can it be a mixture of tethering and free lofting? i'm asking this as its looking promising that i have broken down my parents and they could possibly have come around to the idea of me getting a hawk i have a dog run origionally intended for the lurcher but she had other ideas but i think the run could be used to free loft. cheers Dan
  4. deffinitly wasnt a kessy an seemed to be too white to be a buzzard i only just saw it never mind had time to take a pic ha ha the more i think about it it seems to be more a redtail
  5. was on the train to work on saturday and between earlestown and newton le willows station i spotted a bop as we were going quickly at first its hape made me think it was falcon it had a sort of tear drop shape but then the colouring made me think it was a redtail? it had a white body and head with dark flecks and reddy brown wings like i say it was a passing glance but i couldnt identify it or see if it had any leatherwork attached anyone fly arounf that area?? cheers dan
  6. ha ha sounds like my missus!!! yeah ive heard it can get expensive, ive loved the idea of falconry since i was about 10 but unfortunately me parents dont have the same veiws so looks like ive got to wait untill im in me own place! an old friend of mine has a couple of birds but dont get the chance to get out with him anymore lol what type of weight is she? heard a story bout a guy that was flyin a goldie in scotland when it got into a fight with a wild goldie he got on to defra they ok'd him to take it home an look after it but then he was raided by the police arrested and they took
  7. sounds like a game bird ratcatcher! im desperate to get into falconry and id love an eagle owl but dont have the oppertunity at the min do you fly her often? that sounds similar to the views of some guys on this program duckwing they wern't happy and apparently over in holland they have been taking the odd buzzard to eat as there arnt many bunnies about surely tho if we used to have an abundance of eagle owls that were persecuted to near enough extinction in this country then it shouldnt be too much of a bad thing to have them back! its not as if there arnt enough rabbits and hares etc for
  8. very good to see theyre spreading but it said on the show there is a large amount of resistance from people worried about pets. ive seen them at shows ratcatcher but never been up close an personal i can imagine they are massive and quite intimidating! ive also heard about hunts using them as a sort of loophole to dispatch fox anyone know how true that is? Dan
  9. was flicking through the tv last night and found this programme on "eden" about a pair of wild eagle owls (maybe once captive) living and breeding in yorkshire. so far they've raised 23 young. the show was saying about how they could spread right across the uk was a very interesting programme but think it might be a couple of years old. cheers Dan

  12. i was out kayaking on the docks last night and as we getting ready to get on the water a dark falcon flew over our heads withe a small bird in its talons, it was being chased by 2 seagulls. just wondered if anyone had any ideas it was too big to be a kestrel wich made me think peregrine? i know they can live in city environments can anyone shed any light for me? cheers dan
  13. alright mate how much to post 2 of the books to liverpool? id be after the 2 middle ones if you've still got them cheers dan
  14. thanks for the reply jasper! ill keep everything you said in mind i dont know why but when i think of a harris i dont get the same feeling as when i think of a redtail they excite me more lol i know that sounds a bit wierd but i think when it does come down to it i would rather put in the extra effort with the redtail and have a bird i would enjoy rather than get a harris and not really want it if u get me thanks again and be sure to keep you posted on any developments! cheers dan
  15. just noticed jaspers topic on starting out brilliant post but the type of bird question still stands cheers dan
  16. hi ive had a lurcher for a number of years now but am hoping to be able to take on a bop pretty soon, have had a small amount of experience flying harris's with a freind and i am sure he will be more than willing to help me out if i do get a bird but thought id put this to a wider audience, firstly is there any literature out there i can get my hands on to give me a good idea about keeping a bird. i already have a good idea about weight managment and such, and secondly, a first bird, and i know the obvious choice is a harris BUT is there any other options there is sort of a lack of quarr
