Very nice indeed.

Thanks Corkonian, a friend tells me that the OPW did an Otter census in the last year or two, have you heard anything about that?
-
Maybe read my post again. Like I said those that did it right did no harm. The cowboys did the harm. Mr. Cooney.

I've seen field mushrooms already and this looks like being a bumper year for fungi.

Peter Sinead was a well known terrier but not because of that picture but because he was a good one. Otter hunting was outlawed because the Otter was under threat from pollution and habitat destruction and as far as I know the hunt's agreed to stop. Here in Ireland when the liscence's were took off of the Otter hunts at the time the highest population of Otters was in the area where hunting still took place. Hence hunting had no influence on Otter numbers. This was also found in England too. Badger digging was outlawed in Britain only four years after Otter hunting but unlike Otter hunting

That is some picture of the owl, daytime too. Looks like he seen you as you seen him. Brilliant.

How lucky were you to get that close to a Cuckoo? Would it be common in Britain to see a Cuckoo? Here ,to hear one is a privelage.

Great pictures. Hover fly maybe?

Made the trip over a few times in the early 90s. Used to stay in Ormskirk and met some great people from all branches of fieldsports. And what fantastic coursing, the best IMO. First year for me the winner was the little bitch "Crafty Tessie". Never liked the way some assholes cheered for the kill but my heart really does go out to the real coursing fans. Good days and happy memories.

Black or Very Dark Brown Irish Hares
Neil Cooney. replied to cúagusgiorraí's topic in Wildlife and General Photography
I'd like to have seen that, never seen or heard of a melanistic hare. If you went back you'd probably get a photo. Years ago localised hare populations used to be slightly different in each area. For instance there used to be a population of yellow hares along the coast of North Co. Dublin. I know of a place in Meath where theres a few white hares every Winter. On our preserves the farmer wont let us introduce hares and as a result his hares are an unusual brown colour. A few years ago the C.C.s used to tag the hares ears so they went back to the place they were caught but Duchas has sto -

Why don't you try putting some work and money into something and then when some scum bag robs it make a comment like that. "condemning you whatever you do". He a thief ffs, nothing else. He tresspasses at night and steals someone elses hard work and investment. Simple as that, a thief, a vandal, a scumbag. And it's not done for one for the pot, IMO it's done mostly for image as he comes on here boasting and putting up pictures. Will he come on here telling us how he fills his pants and cried like a baby when he's caught because in my experiences thats what all thieves do when caught. LMAO -
Pip there's a bar or two in my van the whole time. But why after putting my terrier to ground, giving him time to settle, then getting a mark with the box and then decideing when to start digging would I sink a hole? What would it prove or how would it help? Game can bury itself, cave ins and tunnels collapse and collars fail. Then get the bar. I know of a good terrier with one eye who'd agree that the bar is over used.
-
Under no circumstances would we sink a hole with a bar to a terrier, especially a youngster, to satisfy my own curiosity. It's dangerous and by making that small hole your just putting extra pressure on the quarry and terrier. How often do you sink a hole and hear the quarry push by a terrier? Bad enough letting in light and air but then you see lads roaring down the hole telling their terrier he's a good boy LOL. Most game gets by it's terrier as the terrier man is crowning in because there is now extra danger to the quarry as well as the terrier it's been facing. So why would you put ext

First of all ANY breed of dog will snap and bite when a child pulls their tail/ears or sticks their finger in their eyes. Not the dogs or childs fault, don't let it happen. If you want a dog to put out game for a running dog then most terriers or even better a spaniel will do this. But if you go and get yourself a well bred terrier, bred to go to ground, you could be asking for trouble. You could be bushing with your terrier at 8 or 9 months onwards but if he was to go to ground this would be a disaster. If you held him back to a proper age to enter to ground then your terrier must always b

People don't usually eat terriers where I come from.... Malteby I wouldn't think you'd know the difference between a trout and a kebab. There's a lot of wannabee Robin Hoods on here or as sportmen call them "scumbags". -

Maybe I'm missing something? Why bury your face in the ground if your above board???? -
Britains most elusive mammal..

and what county would that be neil as there are plenty here in roscommon and leitrim The Boyne valley. A friend helped in the census. And it's Navan Co.Meath that has 5 otters within. Do any of you's know where the Whitehorse river flows into Loch Ramor in Virginia town? About 5 years ago at about 5 in the morning I was standing in the middle of the river trying to get a trout to take my fly. In a period of about an hour and a half 5 otters passed me going back out to the islands for the day. They must have been fishing around the town all night. I'm told there's a dead ,rotting Otter o -

Funny old world isn't it? On the terrier board someone is unlucky to have their terriers stolen and everyone wants to kill the scumbags. Here, someone steals fish they get a round of applause. -
FYI and IMO abb. ie. JMHO, ROTFLMAO, LMAO etc etc. make life easier, yis NC.

I live in an area that has the highest population of otters in Ireland, so a mornings fishing usually produces a sighting or two. In fact a large town near me has 5 otters within it. Good picture JD. -
Exactly, used when there's no other way of locating the terrier when all else fails. Then why do lads locate their terrier and then sink a bar to see if the locator is telling the truth. The bar can be the most over used tool of the trade and in the hands of a fool can be dangerous and not help the terrier in any way.

Before the fell types came to Ireland the Bull/Russell was usually the type used by someone looking for a terrier with a bit of fire in it. Years ago I remember a 3/4 Russell 1/4 Staff that came out of Dublin. He was out of a Russell bitch called Mini and a half bred dog called Bully. This terrier ended up in Co.Meath in the hands of a man who dug 12 months, 52 weeks a year. Tiny was dug to 3 days a week maybe 2 or 3 times a day. In a days digging he could acount for maybe 3,4 or 5 head of game. Add it up. He did this for 3 or 4 seasons before being killed by a useless Saluki lurcher. Al
