England Basc Game Fair Catton Park This Weekend
adbirdy replied to craigluckyjihad's topic in Gamefairs, Meet Up's and Events
Usually go as its just down the road from me. Not sure there is much in the way of terriers and lurchers for those that are mostly interested in those though. Ade -
Good news about the staffs force as my lad has just put in for his last week. He has had acknowledgement we are just waiting for the call about the visit, hopefully not long now! Ade
-
unless they were bred where docking is outlawed? Have to agree though, I feel its cruel to expect a dog to work hard in brambles etc and injure itself daily! Ade
-
Another vote for a cocker, got two and would get another tomorrow if I had the room! maybe think about a keeper bred dog as they are perhaps a bit calmer and easier to train, rather than an out and out trialling dog and these can be very hot to handle

http://australianhuntingpodcast.com.au/ahp-31-hunting-with-dogs-with-game-council-nsw-ned-makim/ Podcast with Ned talking about pig hunting with dogs, very interesting comparisons with bringing on terriers and lurchers in the UK and the connection \ respect between man and working dog Ade

Great pics all, looks like you had your work cut outon that dig there Jaspper

Doesnt matter what you believe if a farmer / keeper wants you to come and sort some foxes in the breeding season you had better turn up or you wont be welcome back when you are ready to get the dogs out!! Sad but true im afraid. Ade
-
I would agree that most lads would prefer to dig foxes on crisp winters morning. Unfortunately if your livelihood depnds on pheasants , lambs or poultry then foxes have to be controlled and if that means cubs or vixens in cub then thats the way it has to be. You wouldnt keep permission long if you refused to turn out for a sheep farmer who was losing lambs, he would soon find someone else to do the job. Ade

Three to one is a very fair ratio at anything but for roosting pigeons on a wind its very good indeed. Would like to be that bad!!! Glad you had a good evening, didnt see anywhere near that many myself. Ade

Many thanks for the replies, just wondered what sort of thing you chaps used the boots for. Mine will mainly be beating and shooting. Thanks again Ade

Sorry yet another boot thread, does anyone have any experience with Haix Montana boots as I am looking at getting a pair and was looking for some opinions cheers in advance Ade

Unfortunately the negative BBC bias raises its head again. I really wish they would keep their noses out of things they don't understand or at least research the items properly. Badger DIGGING could be an effective and highly selective method of control of badgers related to culling but no one could ever consider this with the level of misunderstanding directed at this method of control, particularly when this sort is sensationalism is pushed out by the main TV channels on a Sunday evening!!!!

check out the mad spaniels website www.madspaniels.co.uk they do good coats for all types of dogs. we have the fleece ones for when they have finished for the day, dries them off better than towelling them down. they also do the waterproof ones, good for when youre just walking (not working) and its chucking it down. Reasonably priced too.

Cheers will get the measuring tape out and let you know what I need. Will pm you when I know.

If i give you the dimensions, can you do bigger boxes as well. I'm after one split in to 2 but not evenly split. I needthe larger section for 2 cocker spaniels and terrier in the smaller section. Ade

Hello All, Thinking about buying some Lowa Goretex boots online and wondered what the sizing is like, I am a size 12 so do I buy that size or do they come up small and would I need a size bigger? They are quite wide fitting so i should be ok there, but just wondered what they would be like with thicker socks in the winter. Thanks for any help anyone can give me. Ade

I too have got my first gundog (a cocker) this year, he is 6 months old now. I have got hold of Simon Tyers series of cocker training DVD's which I have found very useful. I also have a copy of Joe Irving's spaniel training book, which I think is more aimed at springers but obviously works well for cockers and I have found this excellent. The best thing that I have done though is paid a visit to a professional trainer and had him assess the dog. I would really recommend this if you have no previous experience, as you have nothing to compare the dog too. He also gave me really helpful advice

|Hopefully you will have a good day. I would be interested in a day but not until the start of next season as my cocker is only 6 months old at the moment and it would be ideal to reinforce steadiness to fur. Keep us informed if you decide to run some days next season. Ade

Just picked up my print of the badger coming out of the sett, it really is a cracker. I'm really pleased with it. Thanks Steve and of course your good lady!!! Ade

Great post Stevie, really good read. My old fella went on a couple of digs many moons ago with some Irish chaps and they used heavy forks. My Dad said they could really shift some stuff, you don't see too many using them but they do have there uses obviously. Ade

Stevie Make sure you post some pic's of the new prints when they become available, as I'm sure that there will be many interested people on here, me included Ade

Retreiving A Little Bit Of Advice Please.
adbirdy replied to adbirdy's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
I don't have a recall problem he comes in very well to the recall whistle. He retrieves dummies well but will not bring them right to hand, he just runs around with it about an arms length away and just seems to show off with it. I have tried backing off from him, crouching right down so as not to be intimidating but nothing seems to get him closer than that arms length away, it's very fustrating. I have always been very careful to never snatch anyhthing from the dog as I know this can cause problems, so I'm really not sure how to proceed. Ade -
Just need a few pointers if anyone has any. I have a 5 month old cocker whichI have been training using Joe Irving's book. He is a keen retriever and I have only been giving him one or two retrieves every other day. Recently he has taken to not bringing the dummy back to hand, instead he seems to play with it and seems reluctant to bring it in to hand. Does any one have any suggestions as to cure this problem or will he just grow out of it as he gets older? Cheers for any help Ade
