  1. over the years i have seen lots of so called hare dogs most could chase but they couldnt course .a hare given fair law is not going to be caught by a dog lacking stamina. to course five hares one needs a dog with above average speed and above average power .i have seen hares slow down and speed up teaseing slow dogs .lurchers come in various sizes and to course well you need a dog that has the heart and lung capacity plus superiour speed .saluki x greyhound or deerhound x greyhound are the best if bred right but i have seen collie x greyhounds alsatian x greyhounds labrador x greyhounds thaht were excellent. besides stamina one needs a dog with the ability to drop down a gear and then turn the power on a bit like watching scurlouge champ when he was raceing he looked beat at the back but once he fired up his turbo it was goodbye see you later.when out courseing i have seen these types of dogs slow take off and the gypsys thought the money was in thier pocket as thier dog was leading then the dog behind dropped a gear turbo thrust on bye bye terrific strikeing power power and speed wise it is like compareing a v8 astonmartin to a 1600 mondeo

  2. [the best dogs for hunting in woodland are alsatian x greyhound .collie x greyhound .labrador x grey hound all 3 crosses have got brains and are well made the alsatian x greyhound is very good as they are heavily built and have good thick pads and have excellent tracking ability.most lurcher to lurcher crosses especially those thaht are very greyhoundy are not suitable to lightly framed and not built for woodland .i have hunted the woods with all types of lurchers and first crosses allways out perform stamina wise and brains wise whaht they generaly lack in speed is made up by thier versatility tho i have has several first x lurchers that were fast . first x is good for ferreting long netting rough cover gun work and pushing cover true lurchers should be capable of all tasks but longdog blooded lurchers are not meant for woods and are only suitable for open land

  3. [the dogs at lurcher shows are called lurchers but are generaly mainly greyhound blooded.this is ok for running in races .but usaully hunting wise they are not up to it .over the years i have had lots of dogs .when courseing three quarter dogs are faster away than hailf bred but in a few hundred yds a good hailf bred will overtake the three quarter.also most three quarter bred will not enter deep cover bramble bushes etc also thier pads are thinner thier bone and general chasshis is not robust enough.most lurchers at shows are mainly long dog blood .and are ok for light lamping only.a lot of people will disagree but after 38 years of hunting i can be confident that the only really good lurchers are colliex greyhound germanshepherd xgreyhound labradorx geyhound or hailf bred crosses of a similar nature .when a hailf bred is loseing its speed it is still of use as a bushing dog or gun dog when a speed machine ages it is no good for anything else.also compareing the brains of a three quater bred .to a hailf bred .is like compareing a 3 year old child to a 8 year old child.do not also fall for the old chestnut about a dog being to heavy boned that is just gypsy nonsense .some top class coursing greyhounds weigh 85 to 90 pounds.a good 27 inch first cross will weigh at least 75 lbs /the wastage rate of hailf cross pups bred for coursing is very high but if the right one is selected it will retreive work thick cover work the gun course lamp and guard.and work ferrets and the long net.three qurter bred will not be able to chase as long as a hailf bred as they just have not got the stamina.gg.battams alias trilegarde

  4. hi i have bred a lot of alsatian x greyhounds one i had called spider was very fast in 1973 he caught 7 hares in daylight.tho he was more of a deer dog and was to big for rabbits .if out lamping he would allways let the other dog do the work and nip in at the last minute.the pups in my litters were usaully 3 very fast and clever go thru any cover night or day work for the gun etc .rest were to slow for hares but could run all night .3 slow away on hare but could turn on tremendous power when strikeing the hare/most were what i classed as diesel engined slow but lots of power .3 i would rate as v8 .bred 3quarter but not strong or clever enough.had one called titan 27 inch exstremely fast but could not stay.bitches 24 to 25 dogs 25 to 27.in all true hunting dog thick pads good strong skin and coats.ideal survival dog .heavy running wolf dog.gg.battams alias trilegarde
