Always believed brown and mountain hares and the irish hare were here long before the romans i know they brought rabbits always thought the hares came over during the ice age interestingly as well as hare remains i read about the oldest dog remains found in the uk they were of a whippet type 4000 bc at stonehenge atb.

If you had asked this question thirty years ago when the pits were on strike there would have been more than a fair few alrounders out there. We were brought up to believe a lurcher capable of most tasks ferreting and mouching from pups then onto the lamp and coursing as they grew up only thing we never bothered was fox as there was no profit in them.

allotment this year shocking
blacktabs replied to chimp's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Youve hit the nail on the head chimp its new ground mate id be doubling the amount of manure on it for the first year then do a third of it each year sounds like little feed and nothing to hold moisture my lotty was the same when i took it on one year on it produced real well mate thats the beauty of gardening get your soil right and everythings much easier atb. -
Got to agree the places do a grand job but agree also that i would never own a running dog that has been neutered i dont know any genuine hunters that would either so for that point alone i think they aught to have a different approach to folks maybe more than a visit to their premises to see how the pups will be looked after pity as the pups look the right sorts to make good workers but dont think they will be anywhere as good spayed or neutered. Wonder also how many of them get to go six mths and get done and what would they do if the new owner refused atb

Its actually written in as law on ours though how they tell on sight wether youd be a good grower or not i dont know but i just got to know the lads and helped an old boy with his plot was only on the list three mths. General Allotment and Growing Help
blacktabs replied to Insy's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
Hi Ben good post mate 32ft square will do for a start you could always look for more land later. Its late in the season now for planting so all you could do this year is probably clear it and get it ready for an early start next season. Before you start parting with cash for pots Ben get down your local recycling centre the lads there should get you as much pots trays etc as you will need they dont charge at ours for stuff like that. Dont buy there compost though its real low grade atb . -
That would make them inbred father to daugter wouldnt it done this type of mating when i needed to replace a good old dog years ago pups were a bit hypo but no worse for it got what i wanted from the litter so it paid off but next line was a complete outcross so as not to get any faults atb.....

Ten years back i used to fish a gravel pit for weeks at a time cuckoos would come in the trees right where we fished saw plenty of displaying etc no mating though but they have a very varied amount of calls from croaking to laughing noises suprised me as id only heard them cuckoo and hiss before. My old mate had one in a cage in the kitchen for years nasty thing never did tame up atb.

Cheers Derbyduck im in derbyshire mate gods little acre for sure especially so when it comes to the old fungi. Have you tried growing them at home every place ive lived ive managed to get a ring or two growing never thought about wetting them down to get them going till just now though. Mustard mate had my first libby in 75 before they became popular made a good living from them for a few years if you know where to look and what to gather there are better shrooms than libbys but harder to identify . Shrooms can be good money makers those top chefs pay top dollar for our wild delicac
