  1. I rate mine as first class on both counts. I bought mine just as a 17HMR with a view in the very long term maybe buying a 22LR barrel, BUT can never see myself doing that now. It will stay as a 17HMR. It's also not the most expensive one out there, and ok not the cheapest, but it's top quality! Mine will group an inch at 100m and on a really good day 3/4inch. I use Federal Premium V Shok 17grain. Good luck and I hope you get on well with it. Fastrac10
  2. I agree the law bit has been done here, but just to add a bit extra. I have a very good friend who is a policeman and he said he would never want to carry a firearm - because he said if he ever used it he would be hung out to dry! What chance have we got against these people when even the police will not even stand behind there own men? I totally agree with you Mr L on you view. The law is there to protect the criminal not US! Things are starting to change a bit now - but we are a long way off protecting our property with what ever we want too. Another friend of mine has had his farm done tw
  3. Sorry to hear that you are experiencing the same issues. Ironcally, my best results are with the same ammunition. If I do find a compatible factory round I shall let you know. Many thanks for that. The Sako gameheads I was told was very good factory rounds and idea for deer, but should give sub inch at 100yards. Snapshot have just noticed a very slight mark on the barrel, at the forend and the left side. Maybe the stock has caught this. Looks like a trip to gunsmith to take a little off the stock, although the barrel still looks like it's free floating! This could be the problem? Fas
  4. A Sako Quad synthetic cost me £430 new about 18months ago. A great rifle, BUT you can now buy a CZ stainless synthetic it has to be worth a look. Cheers Fastrac10

  6. I have a Sako 75 .243 and having a bit of the same bother. I have a Sako Quad .17HMR that will group less than an inch at 100yards any day of the week. I bought the Sako 75 on the back of that. I use Sako gameheads 90grain for deer and it can be around 2inch groups at 100 yards - which still gives a good kill zone, but not good enough for me to take longer shots at foxs say 150-200yards. I have just bought some different ammo to try for foxs 55grain. Mine also has a T8 on. I wonder if there any more people out there having trouble? I will watch this with interest - as you say the rifle might h
  7. When I applied for my FAC my FAC officer would not entertain a 22LR or 22WMRF for fox control or 17HMR for that matter. He made me apply for a centre fire which I did and went for a 243. I'm with Lothian and Borders police Lucky you! Fastrac10
  8. i think for the money you cant beat the cz 452/453. i brought a 452 american 16" heavey barrel. i paid 280pound brand new. tryed alot of ammo. the best i found was cci 20 grain hollow points. and the hornady v-max. round my area most of the ammo is around 11 pound a box. a mate of mine brought a sako quad. he paid around 600 pound for it and after trying all the different ammo still wouldnt group like the cz. im not saying there all like that but ive heard a few people say that. so in my oppinion money cant buy you accuracy. I bought a Sako Quad about 18months ago, paid £430 new. They
  9. Yes Agree aswell - bigger the better. I used to have 9mag on mine but it's not enough for long range shots. If you hope to shoot out to 150-200 yards 14mag would be my choice. Buy the best scope you can buy and enjoy your shooting! Fastrac10
  10. As far as I know they are priced as a seperate item, Then sold as a package. I'm sure a dealer will be able to help you out. I'm sorry I can't remember how much the items were each. Barrels are between £150 and £180 so the stock and action will or should be the price of a gun less that. Or look for a cheap second hand one if you can find one. Cheers Fastrac10
  11. Well done mate, looks like you've made a great start back! Keep it up! All the best Fastrac10
  12. When I first applied for my FAC my Firearms officer would not let me shoot a fox with a 17HMR he made me apply for a 243 to do the job which also covered me for deer. It was very good adivce. The 17 will do it at close range with a well placed shot, but buy a centre fire and do the job right! Fastrac10
  13. Did you try Weldon Gun Room? If they havn't got it they will get it for you and at the right price! Fastrac10
  14. This is indeed very bad news! I really hope this other guy has insurance but supect not. I'm a farmer and have heard of only one of this type of thing. It was years ago and it was a pedigree bull!! A lot of money but the guy did have insurance. A lesson to us all here - 2things First know what you are shooting at - it's to late when you pull the trigger! Second everyone should have some insurance. We all hope we will never need it but it's there if the unthinkable happens. Safety first - Safety second. Hope this gets sorted out ok Deker. Cheers Fastrac10
  15. Gluebeam To give an answer on your question. I would look for a second hand package, the problem is buying second hand what you want isn't always there, but it will be if you give it time and look hard. I bought a second hand Sako 75 in dare I say it 243 with a T8 and Swarovski scope on it. It was about half the price of a new outfit. It's a fantastic bit of kit. Ask around and be patient. Buying second hand gives you a chance to buy the best for less. As for the other debate on hear. Well its been said but place the shot. I am by no means a total expert, I do take on board a lot from the ver
  16. What sort of Bushnell is it? Is it worth looking for these secondhand or do they break and stop working after a while? Many thanks Fastrac10
  17. I have a Dosko case bought from Sportsman. Not the aircraft secure one just the ABS type. If you have a good gun and it has to travel, then I think they're great. No risk of gun damage and keeps it out of sight! Glad I bought mine. Cheers Fastrac10
  18. I had a Nite-eye 3-9X50 and it was doing the same thing, but when you tried to re-zero you had to give it more clicks than you should have needed to. I took it back to my dealer, they sent it back and it was faulty, so they gave me all my money back. The scope was 15 months old. Top service from Weldon Gun and Deben. I used the refund to buy a second hand Leupold from Weldon Gun, a top quality scope. Fastrac10
  19. Hi John I was talking to someone the other day about these. He uses a Bushnell very good quality. The UK military have ordered a batch, they must be good. As for price well check USA I dont think export laws effect these. Optics planet is worth a look. Hope this helps. Sorry forgot to say its the Elite range of spotting scopes! Fastrac10
  20. Your very right that a 4-16X50 is more than enough for the HMR. That's why I'm going to take a good look at the Bushnell 6500 2.5-16X50 that at the moment is what's getting my vote. It's supposed to have a good field of view as well. Ive got a Swaro scope on my Sako75 .243 and it is magic. If I had the money would put one on HMR but not got that kind of money to spend just now. It sounds like the Bushnell will give good performance for a fraction of cost - winner in my book. Going to Scottish game fair next weekend and hope to get a look at a few scopes to compare. With a bit of luck they migh
  21. It wouldn't really be correct to say I bought the Leupold to replace the MTC. My decision to purchase a Leupold actually had nothing to do with the Viper at all. I had a specific purpose in mind for the Leupold, I had also been considering buying another rifle, thirdly I had also over the past number of years heard people talk a lot about Leupolds and it was part curiousity made me get one. Now, it happens I have changed my mind on both counts, so I have four scopes and two rifles My other scope a Simmons Blazer 3-9x50 isn't worth selling really, so the natural conclusion is to sell the
  22. Hi John Would just like to ask why you bought a Leupold to replace MTC was it not good enough for what you wanted? and how good is the Leupold as it is in a different price bracket. Many Thanks Fastrac10
  23. Looks like a great piece of kit Jamie! Have you had chance to try it out yet? Are you on the look out for another scope now. Saw Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x50 mildot. This looks like a great scope, going to try and get a look at one at game fair at Perth. I did see someone on here with a very good AGS and these seem very cheap. Have been looking for a second hand Bushnell since we last had a chat about scopes a couple of months ago but none to be had just yet. Hope all goes well with the new setup. Cheers Fastrac10
  24. If you go ahead with this option I would really like to know how you get on with it, also if you wouldn't mind would quite like to know the cost involved! Good luck Fastrac10
  25. Hi John I agree the trigger does seem a little on the heavy side. I also have a Sako 75 in .243 and the trigger on that is a dream!. In the Quad hand book it mentions a set trigger, this must be an option, and I wasn't given the chance when I bough it new a year ago. Might have to get in touch with GMK to ask them. Was hoping to get an answer on here first. If it had a first class trigger on the Quad it would be faultless - in my opinion! A set trigger could be the way to go. Hope this helps a bit Cheers Fastrac 10
