Dogs throwing the towel in and breeding.
moonlighter replied to SheepChaser's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Yes he is.. I’ve had some great days out with him and his dogs. He had fly and cass, bred from my parents, then Merlin, Gamble, Judge, Kite. Those are the ones that stick in my mind. All bred from the same original dogs I think. -

Yea my first Lurcher was bred from my parents pet lurchers. She was a fantastic Lurcher, but at the time I just assumed that was normal. She killed her first hare and retrieved it at 6 months old.. I kept a diary as I was only young and I used to write everything down… the same parents bred 2 dogs called Fly and Cass, owned by Stat. Some might know him and his dogs. -

Nope he wasn’t around. He was old and Artificial insemination was used. He died shortly after my pup was born I think -

If a line/type of dog all had similar traits and stamp, I’d breed off a litter mate that wasn’t proven. For example, I had a very well bred coursing dog, bred from some of the best dogs at the time. All the pups looked the same, just like the parents etc. Now the dog I had, lost his nuts due to cancer. If I had a bitch and I was really wanting to use him as stud, but now I can’t, I would use his litter brother that went to a pet home and was nether worked. I would take the risk , as this pet dog would have the same DNA as my top coursing dog. -
Thanks for the replies… I’m getting more permissions in less rural areas, so my .17hmr is a bit loud. I’ve been looking at some videos on YouTube and there having good results with a sub 12flb air rifle, so I might just get one of them and not bother with the FAC air rifle.. if I did get a FAC air rifle, I’d sell my rim fire.
-
I’m new to air rifles, so excuse me if this has been asked 100 times before. I’m thinking of getting a FAC air rifle. As the process can take quite a while, can I buy a 12flb air rifle, then get it tuned up when my variation comes through..also I know someone who is selling what I want in FAC. Could I have it restricted and buy it while I wait for my variation to come through, then have it turned back up? Is this even possible?

Does it hunt well? Spaniels hunt like no other dog I’ve seen, so I imagine it would do well in a lurchers make up.

Why will what happened make a difference. It didn’t when the bloke in Spalding shot his wife and daughter out side the local swimming pool. It made now difference what so ever, and why should it? It’s already pretty strict

I didn’t think the law refers to birds.. I thought it was just mammals that the hunting act was about.

Has anyone ever put a hare to ground with the lurchers

Yes, most weekends in the season -
Ya f****r.. that’s pretty hardcore.. could you imagine if all your hunts were as stressful as that.

Injuries/collisions.... does and donts

That’s your call. I’ve seen my dog jump a 5 bar gate chasing a hare, and catch it within 100 yards on the other side.. the same dog also got killed hiting a dyke side chasing a fox on the lamp.. the same dyke he’s jumped before on the lamp. -

Lamping is the number one killer of dogs.. I’ve lost 3 on the lamp. Depends where you live though and what your hunting. Dykes/hares/deer and your lucky to have a dog reach old age. also, more than one dog chasing can lead to accidents, either colliding with each other, or hitting obstacles on the run, as they have one eye on the other dog, as well as what’s in front. -
Italian Greyhounds (and crosses)
moonlighter replied to Scheme_Lakeland's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
No I’m not upset. It’s just seems like your looking for an answer to a question, which you’ve already made your mind up on. In my opinion, if you live in a flat, you probably shouldn’t own a Lurcher. They like space, garden, fresh air etc, but that’s just my opinion. I’d just use your mates dog to chase rabbits, that way you get the fun, without the hassle. -

If you’ve a mate who’s got one, then get out and see what it’s about.. there’s no point asking on here. Your after a dog that won’t upset your allergies, so it’s working abilities are much further down your list. And what hunting are you really going to do? Chase a few rabbits? If that’s the case any dog will do, find the prettiest dog you can. If your going to use your terrier for digging, ditch the harness and buy a spade and locator, and if your after a Lurcher for some graft, then get a Lurcher bred for work, not one that’s bred for not shedding hair. -
definitely not wanting to get rid as I don’t want to look after them. All my animals live a life of Riley and the kids love looking after them. It’s the same when I’ve had pups. I was only asking as I’ve not bred ferrets for 15 years and the last litter I had I kept.

Thanks for the reply.

What age do you normally sell kits. When I got mine they were 8 weeks old, but mine that I bred this year are now 6 weeks old, and I think there probably advanced enough now to leave their mum. Providing of course, there not going to another home with adult ferrets. I think they would get ragged around too much, but if they were kept separate, I’m sure they would be fine.

You’ve got her dam/sire there. What more info do you need/want? Was the dam 11 then when she had your pup?

I’ve witnessed a terrier with a fallow buck!! It went chasing after a load which went crashing into a woods.. when he didn’t return we found him with a throat hole on the deer!! I can only assume it ran into a tree trunk and it killed itself or knocked it self out.

I love a bit of daytime bushing in the dales, but I do a lot of daytime coursing as it’s on my door step. I do like to see a dog behind a good hare.

Best dog you’ve owned - past or present

The dog on the right.. he did pretty much everything. Mainly coursing, but he lamped, ferreted, working with terriers, hunted up in the dales. -
Anyone run beddy/grey x collie/greys,,?
moonlighter replied to LamperNM's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Not anymore, but these were bred that way. I loved them, but I was only young at the time and I didn’t really realise how good they were.
