Looks like something that could be homemade too, which would save £23... Never heard of this before, but sounds like a good idea. I usually end up sticking my head halffway down the nearest hole to try and hear whats happening, and its only a matter of time before I end up with a speeding rabbit ploughing into my ear.

Mine are oak, very shoddy and crude but get the job done. Nothing fancy is needed really, all they do is get pushed into the ground, and are easily replaced. Pegs are easily improvised too, if you've got a hedge and a knife, you've got pegs.

Never tried it on a layed up ferret, but I once re-caught an escapee in a rabbit box "see-saw" type trap. That worked pretty well, so baited with meat that would be an option if you have one. And whoever said the dead rabbit in the hole thing, tying the rabbit to a stick means you can get it further down the hole if its a straightish burrow.. Its like fishing

I was out last week. It took a lot longer than during the season, due to the ferret messing on with the baby rabbits down the holes presumably. Still managed 7 fully growns and 3 half growns though in about 2/3 hours, so not too bad. There was about a dozen that bolted that were too small to be worth the trouble, so the ones that didnt go straight through the mesh were let go again. Hopefully they will be bigger when I go back. There was also one with mixi so bad on the walk up there that i could have literally walked up to it and picked it up. Looking back i should have probably tried to

When its hot like this though you've got to remember that you've got one out of the freezer, because they defrost much faster, and with all the flies about at this time of year its not long before they end up full of maggots. Not pleasant. I have a freezer dedicated to the pupose of ferret food out in the garage, and it has about 8 rabbits and 2 rooks in at the moment. Put each seperate animal into a carrier back before you freeze them or when you need to take one out you will need a hammer to separate them! Fur sticks like a b*tch when frozen.

Yeah, an older ferret takes a lot more time to be taught not to bite. They have to trust you as much as you trust them.

wow, thats near unreadable.

have they been castrated?, as castrated hob's (hoblets) can be left all year round with the jills, I have one hoblet with six jills in the court, another court has three hoblets, and one jill, all get on fine, but my vasectamised (snipped) hob, still needs to be kept seperate, as do all the intact hobs (all in individual cages) You keep all the hobs on their lonesome stubby? Is there a specific reason for it because I have intact hobs all together all year round without any trouble.

The jab contains hormones to bring the jill out of season.

Why could you only work it if the tide was out?

Not sure about them being lighter mate. The hemp weighs basically nothing and with things like ferret boxs, shovels etc im not sure you would be able to tell the difference tbh.

Mine are just kindling whittled to a point and a hole drilled through. Theres no need for anything fancy IMO
-
thats pretty handy then, how much would 100 rabbits get you then?
-
Christ, what do you do with all them rabbits? I have a full freezer devoted to the purpose but it will still only fit about 20 in lol. Sell them? Also, John, You watched the video while standing up?
-
possibly scent marking to ward off other ferrets? Cats have scent glands on their necks and is probably same for ferrets.

Last year I was doing hedgerows and ended up tying 90% of the nets to the branches and fence etc. rather than using the pegs. It takes a lot longer but is useful in those situations. Sounds like a grand day out, good bag

Just a stab in the dark, but Id say 3? One each end and one in the middle?

After he pops up, I usually run him through about three more times through different holes and if he still keeps appearing, I can be pretty sure nothing is home. If it doesnt reappear after about ten mins it probably means hes trying to shift a rabbit. As well as being quiet, make sure you arnt standing directly in front of the holes, as if the rabbit sees you waiting when hes about to make a dash for it, it will probably back off into the hole again.

How many is that? I counted 20, well good that is mate, nice pics.
-
By something worth 1 pound did you mean the rabbit? I've seen ferrets on sale for 15 quid mate.

I've seen a few young about, and couple of weeks ago had some preggers does, so dont want to risk lay ups without a locator so Im calling it quits until September Ten is all I've ever needed until I started to scrounge up better permission. Most of the warrens I used to ferret never had more than ten holes so Im trying to collect a few more for when I start again later in the year

This is my first actual write-up with pics, as I've finally gotton round to buying a new camera As the season is coming to an end, I thought I would try and get out and stock up the freezer as much as I could for the summer. Went to a bit of permission which was full of open warrens, ranging from several 1 holers dotted around, to a large 30 holer in the middle of the feild. With only ten nets, I had to leave the bigger ones alone however. I did a few sets on this permission a couple of weeks ago, producing 6 rabbits, but thought I would return to see if I could catch what was left. U

saying good-bye was harder than I thought!

Like I've already said, show me some evidence of me doing that. And I didnt say it makes you less of a man. I probably worded it badly if thats what you thought, as I probably wouldnt be the happiest guy on the block if one of mine died. All I meant was theres no point letting something that is inevitable get you down too much, as it isnt going to bring the ferret back. -
