  1. You should'nt buy shite hemp then should you,a good quality even hemp will never break while knitting. Yeah, I agree. It might be cheaper than quality stuff but if it is no good then you have wasted your money. With cheap hemp the knots tend to slip a little too.
  2. Same here, one of my kits doesnt like being in the house. doesnt go crazy like yours, but wriggles like hell when its in my hands and when on the floor hides behind my feet the whole time. doesnt mind being in the shed or garage though strangly...
  3. I remember my grandad used to gas rabbits on his farm, so that they were definatly clear, then after about a few weeks, hed see more of them dotting about. Used to drive him crazy...

At the moment, before i have finished renovating their run so they can sleep there instead, i have my two in a hammock, with a couple of old jumpers thrown in. The hammock is made from an old curtain, and is easily detatchable, so i can stick it in the washing machine every week or so. they seem to really like it, so its the same design as im going for in the run.
  5. Lines are basically obsolete nowadays, but i guess it might be useful if the ferret layed up 8 foot underground. As long as it hadnt gotten snagged then a tug or two could bring it back to the surface.
  6. Im planning to try out two new kits. Two albino hobs, starting around mid-october with them though as they still have a bit of growing to do yet, until they are big enough.
  7. Had a ferret escape today. I had him in the run which was yet to be completely ferret-proofed, but as it was in a garage (which was ferret-proof) I thought it wouldn't hurt to let the two new kits have a run about for a few hours. Obviously they had escaped the run within an hour when I came back to check on them. One of them was easily found asleep between a compost bag and a bin, and the other was no where to be found. After putting the first one back in its cage to finish sleeping and not bother me while I was searching for the other, I turned the whole garage upside down to try and fi
  8. First job, get a book. It will cover pretty much everything and wont cost that much, Internet is also a good start. Research before asking such general questions.
  9. I've two hob kits that are say... 14(?) weeks old now and im planning on trying them out on some clear, shallow warrens about half way through the season. Hobs can usually start a bit before jills because they are a bit bigger and stronger but its really up to you to decide whether they are ready or not.
  10. Yeah, lookin pretty long. Put a slab of concrete in their cage or something to help wear them down a bit.
  11. Nylon is always gonna tangle a lot more than hemp nets, I'd say stick to hemp
  12. Although I havn't had much chance to feed rabbit yet, the few (four... ) I have fed have been whole (ungutted and fur on). It does them no harm, is extra food, and is how they would get it in the wild.
  13. I've heard that meat fed ferrets are more likely to kill than bolt a rabbit. I mostly feed dry, but flesh when I can as it is undoubtably better for them health-wise. Usually my "bag" is extremely light so flesh is pretty far between.
  14. Fairly sure its illegal to shoot starlings and especially seagulls (at least where I'm from). id keep it quiet if I where you. Although i have myself shot a few sparrows in the garden in the past...
  15. Although I use 10 by 10mm, I would have thought chicken wire would do the job much more cheaply. Its more flexable than other mesh though so you will probably need more staples etc. where it meets the frame to stop them pushing though a potential gap there.
  16. yeah, might only do until they grow a bit though, the hole is just the right size for them now, and they are only kits so it might need enlarging with the jigsaw in a few months.
  17. I have two seperate areas which I keep my couple of ferrets in. The first one is a pretty standard hutch/cage i made which is where they sleep, eat and shit in. The other some might call a court or run, but isnt really much more than a pen I threw together. they spend the dayime in there playing and that. The food, water and shit tray follow them into the pen, and there is an area for them to sleep in in there too (part of an acoustic guitar with an old jumper thrown in). if they really wanted to escape this pen im sure they could, but as it is inside a garage they are still contained.
  18. Getting two ferrets in a couple of days and was wondering if my set up would be a little too taxing for the ferrets to get onto the second level. What have at the moment is a pair of cricket trousers, with the legs trailing down off the higher ledge onto the ground floor. Would a ferret be able to climb up the inside of a trouser leg in order to get up, or will I have to add a ramp or something? Too dark to take a photo at the moment, but if you understand my description then please reply. I'll post some pics tomorrow. Cheers
  19. i didnt mean cook them for the ferrets, they are mine!
  20. I do have a book, it only covers keeping them as a pet, not working them. In that book it says ferret food is best but kitten food is acceptable if specialist ferret food is not available, which in my case it isnt unless i get it delivered. If kitten food is not ok, then i guess I'll have to do just that. Being a semi-regular shooter, i have killed rabbits before, and know how to gut, butcher an cook them so thats where they'll be going. Thanks for the feedback
  21. I am getting two ferrets next week and am intending to use them to catch rabbits. What equipment do i need to buy, and where will it be cheapest? I've already got 10 nets, is that enough? Also, is it ok to feed them kitten food because thats what i've been told. Thanks!
