  1. no problem some people take far more rats than i do without having to use a smoker.i struggle to find rats for most of the year and have to get what i can using any method available.if i didnt use a smoker or go out at night lamping rats my dogs would take far less rodents than they do now................
  2. i guess it depends on your location but is a smoker escentual? in some places yes,i dont go ratting with ferrets so if it cant be dug out fairly quickly ill use a smoker.the rats in one big tree trunk wouldnt have moved without it.you could have maybe smashed it up but i dont think the keeper would be very happy.then theres the times when rats are in tree roots, old stone walls, under concrete floors etc etc etc. even if i did use ferrets i wouldnt put them into some places, same as you wouldnt risk a terrier in some earths. having said that most of my daytime rats are taken by eit
  3. as youll know it can be hard for dogs to catch them on the first time they visit a place.after that steps can be taken to block off escape routes, block up nearby holes and dogs learn where rats will run to.
  4. a smoker was used on a few, rest were dug out.some were living in a rotting tree trunk which took a bit of time to shift....................i dont get many rats compared to some people i know but the variety of places i hunt them on day and night means that i never get tired of ratting.
  5. my pointer bitch is there but she is six. the red and white thing is something we let tag along today.
  6. had a look out this afternoon doing a bit of ratting.we do most of our ratting at night so its great to be back out now the cover is dying back.
  7. just a few pics from the last week. i had my year old lurcher out for a couple of hours last sunday in the snow.there werent too many rabbits sat out but i got to see him hunting up.he seems to want to use his nose.he had a few rats during the week aswell. this morning i went back up the dales with tess and minnie and got a few more rabbits before picking up the terriers and going ratting.good days sport.
  8. cheers lads.now that the colder weather and cover dying back has forced more rats into and around the farm buildings ill be doing my best during the christmas holiday to control them
  9. just a couple of pics i took a few nights back with a new phone.
  10. please tell me your joking, thats just insane.
  11. it has been cold tonight.i popped out at 9.30 for a spot of ratting but after spending half an hour and getting four rats i was feeling the cold and went home.it was -3,im just not keen enough to go shooting in that temperature for long.
  12. its ok for rats but i dont think it would have suited me for lamping rabbits.not that i ever tried with the one i had. now i use a lazerlite with a dimmer,it gives me as much or as little light as i want.
  13. good read and pics again, keep the posts coming i always look forward to them.
  14. nice one fireman how long was she to ground?
  15. it wasnt aimed at you, id collar every terrier up,when bushing more than one terrier can go to ground and it can turn fecking terrible. the b and f is a great bit of kit and lets you know if more than one dog is still kicking about.ive had a dog go to ground on a few occasions and the locator has found the dog no-where near where i would have been looking with the old mk1. plus the b and f collar is waterproof,i used to ptfe tape the old deben threads up and cover the whole thing in insulating tape but if bushing around rivers etc water nearly always got in and killed the batteries.
  16. do yourself a massive favour and stick a locator collar on your dog as terriers that dont mess around with rabbit holes might find themselves an occupied fox earth weather you want to hunt that quarry or not. infact it should be inevitable sooner or later. maybe a corgi wont but a terrier taken bushing regularly is going to find fox to ground.ive seen it said on these forums that its not a problem if you know the area your hunting................i find that strange as a fox can open up a rabbit earth overnight and many places wont even look like a fox earth.bushing is good fun and ive spe
  17. for air rifle shooting my best bit of kit after the gun and lamp is the litter picker. no more struggling to fish dead rats out of cracks, holes etc.
  18. Tonight i went out with the young lurcher to give it a few runs but before leaving the pig farm i thought id try the pellets out on the rats.I really like these air arms things.Im not one for trying out new bits of gear, guns or pellets but every now and then something comes my way that just seems to work well.
