  1. Id like to see whippets out ratting or rabbiting id imagine they are spot on.
  2. You have to work hard to make relationships work,i might take her rabbiting for her birthday next month if she behaves herself.
  3. The most important thing for me is that my dogs are out of kennels doing something.Anything is better than nothing.
  4. She wasnt there today but i had her out last night running after a few rats.she is doing ok.........our lass took her on so its her dog.like her other terrier she will go bushing everyday and catch a couple of rats every week or so.Nothing special...........just a pet dog that is taken hunting occasionally.
  5. I guess its unusual for pointers to go ratting but seeing as i own one he may aswell join in sometimes. The way i see it is that the alternative would be to own more terriers and have other dogs left in kennels which just seems mad.Although i go ratting fairly regularly i dont take big numbers of rats.In most situations i go ratting day or night you only need one or terriers to get into tight spots or under stuff, once rats are running about a good ratting lurcher is deadly and i think a pointer will be the same.Obviously if i was getting loads of rats id have more terriers, but then if i was
  6. Had a look out ratting this afternoon and i took the pointer along. He is slowly learning the game........very slowly
  7. I went out ratting last night with HEDGEHUNTER 27 but had to call off early as i had to get up this morning.we got seven rats so it was a canny hour out. Today we had a few hours ferreting.I dont mind ferreting every now and then and after the last couple of days i thought it was better for my lurcher to get a few rabbits without having to cover loads of land looking for them.We mainly just bolted for the dogs.I was actually getting into it and would have happily carried on if i didnt have to get back at 12.00 to change dogs for a couple of hours ratting this afternoon. It takes just under an
  8. im the same frank,i have four dogs,a lurcher,a lurcher pup,a pointer and a terrier,so to justify that amount i feel that i need to be doing something all weekend and lamping rats or rabbits at least two nights a week even if its just a quick hour out after one or two. the cold weather has even meant that the rats arent coming out as much and i havent taken one all week.its hard keeping a kennel full of dogs active all year. ive just got back from rabbiting this morning but that spot is hard land to catch on at any time of the year and we only managed six,i should have taken the pointer to
  9. yeah that must be it mate or they died due to the very cold weather or disease.who knows?
  10. you might be right i dont know.i dont deliberately go after birds so know nothing about them.
  11. cheers lads,it was just good to be out.for various reasons i havent been getting out as much as usual over the last few weeks and it was starting to get me down.
  12. When i checked the weather on the met office website yesterday and it said that the snowing would stop and the sun would come out i phoned a mate up for a look out with the dogs.We were only out for two hours but thats enough for me sometimes having to wade through knee deep snow.My legs are still aching and it must be hard for the dogs aswell. As expected very few rabbits were sat out and the reeds were mostly under snow but the dogs located what they could and after pushing and digging themselves into the white stuff they caught seven rabbits. It was good to see plenty of rabbits sat just
  13. ive fed whiting, pollack, cod, mackeral, flatties and pouting to dogs with no problems.dogs love fish.
  14. if a few people off here are going ill pop over, always good to meet new people
  15. id go along with what you say except that through my own experiences i think terriers will find fox to ground out bushing and its often in dangerous spots so whilst ive enjoyed countless hours out bushing with terriers id keep a type of dog that dosent go to ground.terriers are the best dogs for bushing but my gwp will put out whatever is in cover.it may take him longer and he does it differentely but it will be pushed out quickly enough.there may be cover he cant work through but i dont hunt over such places. so i have a six year terrier which cannot be bushed at this time of year becaus
  16. nearly all my family are in the building trade,i started off straight from school as an aprentice plumber for my dad.he would pick me up from my gcse exams and we went to work..........i didnt even get the summer off. six days a week.its done me no harm. i left plumbing because there wasnt as much work about and went into a factory bagging 25 kg bags of powder up.horrible messy work with shovels and a hopper.no fancy machinery.fecking dark age stuff ............it was yellow and died your skin so you looked like you had jaundice. i worked my way up through hard graft and now life isnt
  17. in theory im all for british workers and all that but take a look around the villages where i live and see the amount of lads who wont work.bad backs must be contagious amongst school leavers. ive worked alongside poles, russians and all sorts and to be quite honest sometimes on a friday afternoon when i want to get home on time ive been glad its them thats turned up. but things are different now and some of my hard working family from the building trade are finding it hard to find enough work.its not the foreigners fault though, they came to work same as we would have if we had been born i
  18. ive found that more rabbits are sat out in the afternoon rather than early morning.perhaps they have fed overnight and are to ground and dont come back out untill later. also when i have to head out at first light you see more rabbits running away from you, maybe when i go in the afternoon those rabbits have been sat comfortably in the reeds for some time are less inclined to move away all theory though,i might be talking nonsense.either way we seem to get more rabbits in the afternoon than the morning when simply letting lurchers hunt up their own rabbits but sometimes i have to go rab
