Probably because him off Countryfile has one lol I'd stick with the GWP for lurchers, from what I know talking to keepers and lads that use them for falconry and fox drives etc. they are known to generally be better for stuff that bites back.
-
Maybe a 3/4 whippet 1/4 spaniel might turn out ok for stuff like that. The gwp cross is the dog for me, I wouldn't have kept them for so long otherwise.
-
Sounds good. I've not bothered with deer and only bumped into the odd fox. Rats and rabbits were my quarry. Have you taken your dog onto the fells? I'd imagine that's where it would show its nose to the full.

I've spent many enjoyable days out with hounds, around 60 packs all over Britain but mostly with fell hounds. Many hounds won't take a fox single handed and the ones that do are often bred out of stock that did. So I'm assuming a lot of thought goes into picking the hound blood in a lurcher mix. I'd like to see a hound cross, hounds have the best noses so they could be my ideal lurcher cross but as we all know theres more to putting game in the bag than just nose and stamina.

The Russian Diamondback is a nice fish. The photo is blurry but they are quite stunning up close.

Regardless of cross and how they do at this and that I have always found the test of a daytime hunting lurcher to be on a cold wet windy miserable day on open land that doesn't hold much game. Then a dog has to keep hunting and there's nowhere to hide, many just give up after a few hours or start getting closer and closer to you. The cleverer ones try to look busy by marking sets and walls begging you to produce a ferret lol.

This fish didn't fight very well for its size on a 10ft carp rod and 10lb line but I was pleased to catch it.
-
Sturgeon grow quickly and are always hungry. I've only caught half a dozen to 21lb ( Siberian, Russian and Sterlet) but was disappointed by the fight. They gave a tug then just gave in, a 3lb carp fights much harder. They also need careful handling and take quite a long time to recover and swim away. Still they are a good looking fish and grow big. Being easily caught they would provide specimen sized fish to newcomers to fishing if they were allowed to be stocked. The EA say they can only be kept in ornamental ponds within the confines of a property but a few lakes have them in. It's only a m

I wish I'd known they were shit Ive wasted fifteen years on them.

I would think so, I've read about it being done with collie crosses etc over the years so a gundog cross should be capable. After my lurcher was retired and I'd started hunting with a hawk she had days out with us and flushed stuff for the bird without trying to catch it. I admit stopping her from chasing a rabbit would have been harder when she was in her prime but I think it can be done. I have a pure GWP that goes out with Hawks but kills rabbits, rats and has caught the odd hare out with lurchers. There were times times when my hawk had caught a rat and another one ran out which my lurcher

I dont know about GSP's but the GWP's ive seen and my own two are nothing like the above dogs. Thinking about it nervy dogs that bite then run away for severel hours are not good examples of any breed of dog.

cheers mate I've been busy for the last few years with Hawks and rabbit numbers dropped so low on the dales areas I get to go on that I haven't thought about lurchers until recently. My old lurcher is too old and knackered for even a long walk now but a few seasons ago she did go out with my hawk and even after catching stuff all her life she knew to leave a rat or rabbit if the hawk was going for it. She was a very special dog for me and I could cry when I see her wandering around the garden in her old age with her eyesight and hearing getting worse rapidly. I've been saying I'll never have

I've a young pointer bitch at home that will start work out with the hawk next month, then slowly introduced to working alongside lurchers and taken ferreting. I'm hoping after working a season as a steady pointer alongside the Hawks I can allow her start ratting and catching stuff the season after when she isn't out with the birds. Others have done it ( The first time I saw CN's GWP was out after rats and she did all sorts of hunting including working for his Goshawks, she later produced lurchers like mine from his coursing dogs ) I will in time take her out lamping rabbits and I have no doub

Young dogs looking well mate

Like I said there was a bit more to it but either way I was completely innocent. Mistaken identity aside the fact remains my 70lb big GWP was pointed at and accused of some fairly impressive hare coursing. I know he's quite the all rounder and I'm quite proud of him but he has his limits LOL.
-
I was once accused by a policeman of hare coursing with my GWP. In the following lengthy interview I had to describe why my trained falconry dog wouldn't run after a hare, why he would be unlikely to catch one if he did and then re-enact how a dog goes on point. There was a bit more to it than that but charges were eventually dropped.

I've wanted to catch a catfish for a while so had a go for them this year. Only for a few days and I've only had babies up to 22lb so far but I really enjoy catching them. I haven't been fishing for long and I'm a useless angler with zero skills so everything's a struggle but I love it. Out of the 106 types of fish I've caught the Wels catfish is now my firm favourite.
-
I hope he's ok mate.
-
I'm still fishing I'll start begging invites off you in a months time lol
-
yeah I had some good times with Tess, if my young pointer works ok I think I'll breed a litter of lurchers from her. Brought up with the Hawks a lurcher would know how to behave around the birds. Well we know that we've both flown Hawks with running dogs.
-
Not far away now mate,
-
I was kindly offered one of these pups from the breeder but I'm not in a position to run a lurcher on just now. I told him I'll slip the one he's keeping when it's time to start working it. I've always like Rocco he wants putting over a GWP lol.

New Pointer Lurcher To Hunt With My Trained Mink!
pointer replied to Minkenry's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
All my dogs started killing rats as soon as they had their second teeth so around the six month mark. Terriers, lurchers or the pointer it made no difference. -
Have you seen the terrain? That's a plus for their hunting style I didn't say it wasn't lol and yeah I've seen the terrain, I've walked over enough of it over the years whilst visiting the Canary Islands.
-
Yeah they screamed and yipped after the rabbits.
