No bother

I couldn't be doing with dog fighters. I'm no expert in GWP's but off course a laid back type ( whatever that is ) could still be good at the foxes same as with any other type of dog.
-
No they don't go wandering around if trained properly, they are seriously versatile dogs in the right hands and head banging nutters in the wrong ones.

Seeing as pointers are shooting/ falconry dogs it could be expected that a pointer cross would stand as good a chance of doing what you describe above as any other cross. There will be a few keepers that like a bit of terrierwork that have seen how keen some GWP's are on a fox. Therefore a cross from such a dog may produce a useful digging companion. I've seen GWP's out ferreting loads of times and I'd expect a pointer cross to take to that fairly easily. Having said that I've seen and owned a few pointer crosses that weren't up to the job but that could be said of many lurchers of all kinds.

A Bit Of A Family Gathering For Pups First Birthdays!

Good pics and it looks like you had a good day out lads. -
Nice pic that of the old boy. It was windy this weekend so I stayed local. The cover makes things hard but she caught a rabbit and a moorhen plus a fairly large rat.
-
Spot the rabbit.

I enjoyed the walk even if my pointer did peg a rabbit and steal another one from a lurcher before running around with it like a divvy lol
-
Another good session. She was lucky to hold onto a couple of them.
-
We are mate, it's a lot more pleasant now the temperature has dropped.
-
She wasn't letting go of that one.

Aye there's life in that old dog yet lol. Really enjoyed tonight and we got to see some good flying over the dog.

Bolting To The Lurchers Vid From The Other Day
pointer replied to Trev70's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I had the same thing happen and for the last few seasons with my old lurcher I never went ferreting. Me and a mate would go out 3/4 times a week with a lurcher each and come back with an average of I'd say 20-40 rabbits depending on the time of year and the rabbit population on a piece of land. We never went out for more than two hours and that was enough rabbits for us to carry around. For much of the season I was able to get back home and do something else like bushing with the rest of my dogs or ratting. (My old lurcher has taken at least twice as many rats as rabbits in her life). The -
Bolting To The Lurchers Vid From The Other Day

I must admit that I took the whole hunting up thing a bit far when I would get very annoyed if I thought my dog had rushed in and bumped the rabbit off the seat when it should have been taken where it sat. If she did that I wouldn't watch the resulting course and didn't care if she caught it or not. I was the same if she lost concentration and a rabbit bolted when it should have been snapped up without hitting the ground. Both usually occurred due to another dog being too close and I suppose my dog got impatient thinking the other lurcher might steal her rabbit. Looking back it was a pathetic -
Bolting To The Lurchers Vid From The Other Day

I started with nets, then bolting to a lurcher before just going for a walk 3/4 times a week with some lamping in between. Lads have always travelled to the northern dales and fells to go hunting and I don't blame them as we have some nice countryside. I never understood them driving so far to watch rabbits hitting a net or even bringing ferrets with them as I found going for a walk watching a pair of lurchers hunting the hills to produce enough sport. It's the same with fox hunting the gunpacks kill loads but give me one good fox that can run for several hours with a chance of outwitting a pa -
Yeah the teamwork is great to see. I didn't think I would be into flying harris hawks together but the way they learn to hunt together is some sight. When they do fly together our hawks rarely grab each other's catch only getting involved again if the quarry escapes by pulling free. They behave better than some dogs I've owned.

Mine grabbed a ferret on her first time out with them but she must have known her mistake as she let go and the ferret was fine. Since then she's been great with any ferret of any colour, on one occasion when she was in a tree the ferret grabbed the rabbit which then bolted and she waited until the rabbit pulled free before taking it. Fourtrak73 was there that day and I find it amazing these hawks can be so clever, almost like dogs at times. I had mine back out late yesterday when the temperature dropped a little. She seemed to follow the sprocker better and was trying to catch stuff in t

It took time but my hawk works well with my pointers now and is great with the ferrets. Its been worth the effort but there were times when I thought I'd have to get another hawk in.

Nice one lads

Mines a big lad weighing about 70lb but he is seriously agile with it. I wish I'd filmed him out ratting and catching rabbits because it was something to see. He was allowed to catch whatever he could until a few years ago and I think it's pretty clever of him to be steady out with the hawks. He will peg the odd rabbit if it doesn't flush but they are usually mixied, even then I think he flushes that hard that he pushes rabbits against the cover and they just break and can't run. My young pointer should be steadier as she hasn't been allowed to please herself. I spent this afternoon out w

Nice one mate, he looks a strong dog.
-
Yeah she's keen now and trying hard. She was unlucky not to catch anything last night out with my young pointer too so things are looking good.
-
Really enjoyed that hour out this evening. At last she is looking keen and just needs to get fit again. Feels good to be back out hunting again after a pretty unsuccessful summers fishing.
-
Good pics mate and it looks great land to hunt over.

I don't mind at all mate post away more the merrier. The young pointer has been a pleasure to own but I should have had her out more, she's going to have to learn on the job this season. I don't need anything fancy just an enthusiastic hunter that will hold a point until I get there. So far she hasn't gone out very far but that will be my fault and I'm pretty confident everything will work out just fine with her.
