  1. Shame about the toe but I'm sure you'll get it sorted. Next season will soon come around.
  2. Had another good session today with some nice flights, my mates hawk got to catch a black rabbit which didn't give up easily and had broke free twice before finally being secured. My hawk caught a rabbit in the air as it leapt over the edge of a steep bank, quite dramatic!!!!!!. They caught seven between them and the ferret killed others. My hawk is back on form after she had been going terrible for a couple of weeks. I'm wondering if she was injured or sick in some way that I couldn't detect. Whatever the reason she worked well this weekend.
  3. I was late getting the dogs out last night and I wasn't sure what they were marking under some old rotten boards and plywood that one of the allotment lads must have dumped on the waste ground. I dragged the mutts away and ran back home before grabbing a lamp and the hawk. After moving a few bits of the rubbish a rat bolted for a simple catch. I wish I could get her kills like this so easily every day. This morning I was back out with Fourtrak73 on his land for a bit of ferreting before the forecast rain started. She got a few good flights catching two rabbits and missing others. The sky w
  4. I'll be honest and say that I'm ready to stop hunting in a week or two. I started getting her ready at the end of August and have tried to fly my hawk as much as possible. My season has been long enough and I'm also ready to start fishing again as that's as important to me as hunting. I can see why some people want to keep flying their Hawks and interacting with them but personally I'm happy to finish the season on a kill and a big feed from it. Apart from looking through the bars at her twice a day to make sure she's ok and occasionally cleaning her aviary out I leave her alone. She doesn't w
  5. I do like the look and colour of the HWV's. Just arrived back from a lamping trip but whilst we saw rabbits they were lamp shy and with the clear conditions they were heading for safety before we could get close enough. I gave her a few long flights for practise.
  6. Opinel, cheap tough and re sharpen easily.
  7. We had a canny trip out lamping last night on Fourtrak73's land. She didn't get to hold onto anything and the nearest she came to catching was grabbing a rabbit at the bottom of a gate but it pulled free. She's lost a bit of fitness lately and it showed but she did put in some nice flights. Looking forward to trying there again.
  8. I agree it's not rocket science which is why after doing everything you've said and more for two years and still not getting to where I need to be i've ran out of ideas.
  9. I'm breed blind when it comes to dogs, I know that just about any breed could do what I need it to do but I'm a GWP addict lol.
  10. If I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have gone near this hawk. If I do have to get another hawk I'll only consider one that's seen dogs from the start and I'll get it out flying and killing at the earliest opportunity. I have learnt from keeping this hawk though and if I was happy to hunt her without a dog she would suit me fine. She is deadly if on weight and has shown me a lot of sport this season. Unfortunately I'll always want to be out hunting with dogs around no matter what I'm doing. I can catch as much stuff using ferrets or going lamping but I won't be happy until I'm flying a ha
  11. I had a good start but then I hit a bad patch then a month of bad weather. I think the realisation that my current hawk is temperamental around dogs and isn't ever going to make the grade I desire has resulted in me losing motivation to keep doing as much as possible. I certainly haven't gone looking for hares like I planned to. It appears obtaining a harris at a year old that hasn't done much or seen a dog isn't the best of purchases!!!!!. It's not the end of the world ive learnt a lot from flying her over the last couple of seasons which hopefully will help me when I start with a fresh haw
  12. Yeah ratting is pure fun, I can remember the first rat I caught with a dog and it was good to see our latest terrier get its first one today. I don't do much ratting these days but I'm glad we have two young dogs around because our other three dogs are getting old and slowing down quick. I haven't got as much done with my hawk this season as I wanted to but it's gone OK overall. I think I'll go to the end of this month and then call time on it. If I'm honest I'm ready to stop hunting and start fishing.
  13. I've taken my eye off the ball and let my hawk get too heavy, today she didn't jump onto the glove when I opened the pen door so I didn't take her out. I have done in the past and even caught stuff with her but it's a hassle dealing with an unresponsive bird. It wasn't a completely wasted day as we went ratting and got my lasses young terrier its first rat. By the end he was watching and waiting for rats bolting.
  14. My hawk went terrible today for some reason, her weight was slightly up but not enough for me to expect such a dull performance. She only managed to grab one poor rabbit that was skinny and had been knocked about by the ferret before bolting. My mates hawk was on form and caught four rabbits after long downhill flights.
  15. That's great mate, I'll give you a ring next week.
  16. I haven't ran into any young rabbits or even pregnant does yet so I haven't thought about stopping but there's not long left now. The plan was to go up Scotland after Christmas after the mountain hares and maybe the Browns but the last five weeks has been terrible weather wise. I think I might try and bag another couple of squirrels and end the season.
  17. The weather has meant I've done very little hunting with the hawk. All she's had from my last post is one rabbit. Weather permitting I've been able to fly her for a short time after work but there's not many rabbits "round the doors".
  18. Shame mate, I didn't get out at all. It was really windy up here.
  19. That's a shame mate, mines only grabbed the arse end of a couple but never stopped one. I rarely bump into them. Good luck for the weekend.
  20. A fairly uneventful week with just two rats and two rabbits caught. She was heavy yesterday and it showed with a poor performance, thankfully my mates hawk was bang on showing good sport and catching a few rabbits after long flights. Today was windy but I tried to get something done but after ten minutes I gave up and went home. It's been a rubbish few weeks.
  21. Good luck mate I hope you bag one
  22. Shame about the weather you've had mate, up here it hasn't been too bad at all and whilst I've lost days to wind and rain it's been nothing like last season.
  23. I took her out for half an hour between the rain and snow but she spotted pheasants and kept flying over to where I cant hunt her. She was reluctant to return but that's normal for her when she knows there's quarry still in the cover below. The snow started again so I went back home. We did have a good afternoon yesterday with the lurchers and my pointers so it hasn't been a completely wasted weekend. My pointer pup seemed to enjoy running around in the snow.
