We had more flights over the dog at the weekend but the wet ground soon had the hawk soaked. She only got to take one rabbit each day but that's ok as long as we don't blank and she gets to catch something that the dog found I'm happy enough. I keep forgetting to take the GoPro camera, some of the flights last week would have been worth watching.

Quarry has often been hard to find and with only upto an hour after work to do anything we've often been running out of daylight before bagging something. However my hawk is working with my dog brilliantly and I'm seeing the type of hawking I prefer, flights over a pointer. The bracken makes things difficult and she would be catching more if I went ferreting or lamping but the sport this week has been great and I'll continue to concentrate on getting the hawk/dog team I want.

Nothing much to talk about this week just a load of near misses and walking around sweating in the ridiculously warm weather. I have had my hawk flying over my pointer and we got to see some good dog work and flights on Saturday. She only connected with one rabbit but it towed her around the hill and I couldn't get to them quickly enough before it pulled free. I've also had her crashing down after stuff in front of my young pointer so that's a promising start and hopefully will lead to a good partnership. She did get to take another two rats and two pheasants one of which was caught in flight

I have a few good mates that will help me out like they did last season so I'm not panicking just yet lol.
-
Looks like she knows what she's doing mate.

To be honest I'm struggling, sets that were full of rabbits last season are empty now and although ive seen a few rabbits around the cover it will be a while until it dies back and cold weather pushes the bunnies to ground. I've seen some good hunting the last few days but a lack of quarry is a worry but something that will hopefully be sorted out by begging invites off mates.

I've seen some good flights this week but heavy cover has made things difficult. We did try and bolt a rabbit for her on Wednesday but the sets were empty and a low rabbit population is an issue. I'd hoped they would breed well but that doesn't appear to be the case. I had a bit of a panic on Thursday when she caught a rat against a fence and it had grabbed her beak and was hanging on. Thankfully no damage was done and the rat was dispatched quickly. Ten kills so far so not a great start but not terrible.

Nice pup, your season seems to have got off to a good start.

I've had my hawk out for a week but the cover is ridiculously thick, even for early season it's crazy. Still it's good to be out. She was still a touch overweight and a bit unresponsive until Wednesday but she has caught five rats one of which was bolted by a ferret out of a dry stone wall high up in the dales. Lack of fitness showed yesterday as I tried to get her a rabbit and she missed a few, in the end she got to jump on one that the ferret had knocked about before it bolted. I won't count it in her season tally but she needed to get hold of one after missing others and I let her have a fe

Falconry and hawking is good but there's a few different ones which I can't remember the name of. You just do a search join what you think you will like then it all comes through as news feed. Then check what looks interesting and ignore everything else. I spend most of my internet time on Facebook now checking out various hunting and fishing pages. For me nothing else on the Internet can match it.

I'll be flying the same Harris hawk as the previous seasons. I'd like to be able to get in another one but as much as I try I can't justify the need for more than one bird due to time, quarry numbers etc. Maybe one day.
-
Never thought of that but yeah.

Facebook doesn't have the bickering that the IFF has and every page is in the same format so once you get used to how Facebook works it really is the best thing on the Internet. The way pictures and video can be uploadd easily from cameras and smartphones means a lot of stuff gets posted.
-
Yeah the IFF is rubbish now but it can be useful for archive threads, the Facebook forums are good. In fact Facebook is brilliant for just about everything I do now with hunting and fishing.

That's a shame Lee. Mixy has killed a lot of rabbits where I go this summer but we will do what we can. The cover is thick like you say but I think the hedges around the stubble fields and a few open sets should allow me to get something done.
-
I wouldn't say I'm in a rush but I do feel ready to start hunting again. I like to get off to a good start as you never know how the season will go with the weather, quarry numbers and possible injury.

How's people's Hawks going? Mines had a slower moult than normal and still has a few feathers to come down, we should still be out by the beginning of September. For now I'm just doing a bit of fishing and spending time with my young pointer.
-
Mines probably about the same mate, should be ready for September.

A terrier could work well with a hawk and flush enough stuff but they do tend to go to ground. I sometimes used to have to fit locator collars to my terriers when they were out bushing and ratting as you never know when a fox will have popped down a drain, earth or stack of bales. Twice whilst lamping rats I had to wait until they bolted a fox before I could go home. It would be too risky in areas with badgers which is just about everywhere these days. There are enough people using terriers out with Hawks and for generel bushing so it can be done but it wouldn't be for me. I lost a terrier out

I've just got back from holiday and my hawk has dropped a load of feathers after having a slow moult. Got to say this summer is flying over and I haven't had time to do half the things I wanted to in the off season, a few fish have been hooked though lol
-
I was never any good at math lol, I'm sure every bodies hawk will be ready for September. I'm looking forward to it and my young pointer should be ready to start working.
-
I'm not sure how many mines dropped as she shreds her old feathers. I haven't seen her do it yet but if I don't get them out quickly she must like playing with them lol. I don't give it much thought and apart from looking in on her twice a day and chucking food through the chute with an occasional rough clean of her aviary I don't think about her in the summer. She will be hunting by the beginning of September that's for certain so it's not long now.

About Books And The New Authors Nowadays.
pointer replied to Lutra Lutra's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
The Bezzant brothers have produced the worst hunting books by far, and they get to write more crap in airgun and smallholding mags every month. Sean Frains books are a bit naff as well but as someone who loves ratting I'll give him some credit for including hunting rats with a hawk in his book even if it doesn't go into detail. I think some books are still worth a read for the newbie who just a wants to read as much as possible, Sean Frains for example but they just aren't worth spending money on which is why his aren't so bad as they can be obtained through libraries, read and then handed b -
