Experienced (and ensured) ferreter needed
doddsy1970 replied to trephilgar's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
I offered some ferreting on here a while back and one of the conditions was that they were insured. I did eventually find someone and he was a thoroughly genuine guy who enjoyed a really good day. I dont know why people view such offers with such scepticism. Tre...... I hope you find the right person to help you. -
I had a short look about today with the ferrets, accompanied by the wife and her lurcher pup. To cut a long and rather boring story short. The final pice of land we ferreted, ended up with me digging 18" to a nest full of week old baby rabbits. Now this would have meant that they would heave conceived during all the cold and snow.... Who said they dont breed during the cold weather? Or was it a case of cant get out so we had better have a bit of jiggy jiggy?....... Anyone else seen any kits yet?

Would they be worth more as scrap with that much lead in them?

Thanks for your words of wisdom but i do know my dogs can be dangerous among other dogs so i do control them, that is why i still have these presant dogs at 10yrs old and 13yrs old, now go away young boy and play on your Xbox or watch some porn. I take it you muzzle your dogs if they are dangerous and a threat to other dogs then, and if its a staff, its ashame as it gives the good dogs and owners a bad name as they are mainly nice dogs For F_cks sake Olim show a little bit of respect. Kevin has just lost his dog and all you are worried about or care about is your personal b

I used to take my lurcher beating but stopped because she would get on a scent or see a fox and that would be it. She was good when a fox got clipped but it made working my spaniels properly next to impossible. Now she only goes ferreting, ratting and lamping with us and i pick up and beat with my spaniels. But my father in law has one of her pups and he is brilliant. He retrieves flushes and bushes as well if not better than some 'classic' working breeds (although not as good as my spaniels) . If it is trained right there should be no reason why you could not take it beating.

How much experience do you have training gundogs? If its very little i would go with a lab or springer. All the best what ever you choose.

I have never come across this breed and cannot comment on it but reading your post made me think. 1. Why are you thinking about this breed? 2. What can this dog do that your "regular" breeds cant? 3. What ground are you working? 4. You state that they take longer to mature.... If you bare in mind that a springer or lab on average take approx 2 years to mature to full working ability how long does this breed take?

New years day almost off with a bang

By the sounds of it you were one lucky man....... If the bullet had travelled a little bit further up the barrel the consequences bare not thinking about. I was reading a letter sent into sporting shooter with a question about mis fires and he basically said that he hd been shown how to shoot safely but no one had ever shown him how to deal with a mis fire. I wonder how many people do know how to deal with them...... Glad your ok though. -

To be perfectly honest you dont really want to shoot the game birds for at least a couple of seasons and in the mean time feed, feed, feed. All through the year. You also need to be religious with your vermin trapping. This is probably the most important part of keeping and protecting a wild stock. You need to identify the areas the wild birds (pheasants and partrdige mainly) are concentrated and create feed rides for them. When the weather starts getting wet and cold, then you start putting straw down. When that straw is wet and dirty, then you put more down because no one like to eat off of -
The trouble with training in a park or somewhere similar is there are too many distractions from other smells etc. The dog needs to be somewhere where its mind is not going to wander.

Im sorry Mickey but i just cant see the need for them call me old fashioned.

I have a wide experience with shock collars and from this experience I dare to say that if used properly and in combination with a suitable training it is by far the most animal friendly training aid I know A good shock collar has a very fine adjustable strength, and in the lower part of the range the "shock" is hardly noticable. This I can tell from personal experience as I used the collar on myself before using it on any dog so I know exactly wat I am doing to the dog. In addition, anyone who comes training his dog with me and wants to use a shock collar has to feel te shock for themself

Bloody awful things..... People who use shock collars are people who dont have the savvy to train a dog...... Ask her to put it around her neck and let you press the button

Its not a case of the position of the target but the art of getting into position without being seen heard or smelt.

depends on what type of work you want it to do and how often you want it to work. Id say the majority of field trailers kennel there dogs. I kennel'd my 2 but my mother keeps bringing them in, it really has ruined them in some aspects of working. Not just from being inside but from what comes with it. People throwing things for them and not getting them to retrieve it, letting them all over the house and furniture, feeding them from the table. Its ridiculous. When they are naughty or cause trouble then I am to blame cos there my dogs. Does my head in! Mine is kennelled but is allowed i

I live in Bedfordshire fella. 6 miles from Woburn Park where they originated from. I see chinkys on a very regular basis and i know that this ground will be populated by others very soon. I do agree partially with what you say and if i lived else where i would probably say the same thing.

Your whistle is just fine but when you blow it dont burst your lungs trying to make it as loud as possible. All you want to do for training is light peeps.... For example 1 peep for sit, 2 peeps for quartering/ changing direction (this is where the dog hunts in zig zag), a series of peeps for the recall. The second whistle that you see around trainers necks is normally a thunder whistle. This is used for an emergency stop whistle or for chastising the dog.... I personally dont use one but i know of a few people that do.The one thing with whistle training is to get the pup used to one before mo

When you have her sat rather than getting her to come to you try going to her every so often. This might reassure her that you are not going away and as such make her a bit steadier. Thats what Im doing mate, I still can barely get more than 4-5 feet away and she wants to move Thats a start........ If you were closer i would show you my dogs and what i meant.
