In centrefire there is the .17 Rem and .17 Rem Fireball. In rimfire there is the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire and .17 Hornady Mach 2. What is a .17 Remington Magnum as it is unlisted here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rifle_cartridges

I think only Remington are currently producing rifles with .17 Rem Fireball chambering. There are several models with synthetic stocks, the Model 700 SPS Varmint and Model 700 VS SF. I'm not sure whether the camo version of the Model Seven Predator is synthetic or a camo finish over wood. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms...SPS_varmint.asp There's also a nice looking timber stock version, the Model Seven CDL with a 20" barrel. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms...l_seven_CDL.asp

I have the OK from my FEO for .204 Ruger or .17 Rem Fireball. Just a week ago I was sure it was going to be a .204 Ruger but couldn't find one with a factory 20" barrel (the Sako 85 is not imported into UK). So, I'm considering a .17 Rem Fireball, the 20" Remington Seven Predator . Unfortunately the general consensus is that I'll not get many rounds through it before rebarreling.

Jamie, I'm thinking of the .17 Rem Fireball, Remington Seven in camo with a 20" barrel and I was hoping that the RFB would replace the .17HMR but if I'm only going to get 2,000 rounds through it before it needs rebarreling then it will have to be rebarreled every year ! Not what I was hoping for !

I believe that the .17 Rem barrel life can be as short as 1,000 rounds; a potentially expensive problem and the main reason why I've never bought a .17 Rem. But, I'm was hoping for better with a Fireball with lower MV and powder charge. I don't do rapid fire range work, just walkabout hunting, so the barrel shouldn't ever get real hot.

Hi, Has anyone got any experience/comments on the new .17 Rem Fireball ?

At present I am in the process of investigating reloading. Is the Ruger 204 considered to be a "barrel burner" ?

Thanks for the info'. Something to think about since it seems that it's not possible to find a factory 20" fluted barrel in UK for a Ruger 204. Pretty much, based on: high MV, high BC, good accuracy and low recoil.

I'm looking for a Ruger 204 to be used as a walkabout rifle for long range vermin and the occasional fox. But, the only rifle I've found with a 20" barrel is a Sako 85 and, according to the Sportsman Gun Center, they don't normally import this model and it would take about 9 months to get one. So, that's out. Meanwhile, I've found a s/h chopped Howa 1500 on GunTrader with a 20" barrel but there is a question mark re' it's accuracy. I'm reluctant to buy new and then immediately get it shortened as it would invalidate the manufacturer's warranty. So, any other suggestions

Deker Thanks for your first hand info'.

Jamie me old mate, I went into our local gun dealer today and asked about reloading powder and his response was that as carriage costs were very high he has stopped selling the stuff ! So, what to do now, eh ?

WHY????? What is it meant to do to the barrel? And Why .223, they make plenty of calibres in steel cases, what about all the others??? Have you ever asked anyone who has used it about their barrel??? It's news to me and I use it a lot in my Tikka .223 which has very fine rifling, I have no problem. If someone knows something I don't and can tell me I'm going to get a problem I'd like to know please!!! Here's what others have said about cheap Russian ammo': "I’ve heard things about Wolf Ammunition being bad for barrels and other parts. For those who don’t k

Hmmm. I've read somewhere that the Russian steel cased Wolf ammunition supposed to be bad for 223 barrels ?
