The trouble with the US fur market is that wild fur will struggle to compete against the 'purpose-bred' chinese fur from 'farmed' animals. God only knows the state of the chinky fur farms, you'd think there'd be a push to utilise 'ethically harvested' fur, trapped from the wild rather than from cages. But it all boils down to £££ o0r $$$ rather. IMO the fur market will continue to drop as the chinkys breed more and more, Russia is a big market for fur, but times change and markets move... The Americans will always get good $ for cat, wolf and wolverine though.... But we in the UK are kiddi

Mazperks you and everyone else apart from 2 on here are baffled how you catch a adult fox in a 6" trap. Magic? The trap is walled in so the only way a fox is able to get out of the 'earth' is through the trap. The kist trap is very tight and allows no room for the fox to move. This is why, in my opinion, they would bring the user foul of the law. I must confess that I don't like them at all. They also make them out of stone in some places.

Hi Skycat, no, as it happens the Fox Moth is one I never tried. The thing with overwintering as larvae is that it is often a nightmare. I used to try and keep the overwintering larvae in my garage, dry and cold. It's a nice moth but not one that I gave much thought to breeding....

None of those presenters could live with me...... unless it was bee's or fungi...I'm useless with those!!

A lovely moth...spitting dabs for silver birch twig. An easy moth to breed..... I always think their caterpillars look like cabbage whites....

Coot, if i had to hazard a guess.....

I was at a swarm the other day taking a few photos. A beekeeper came across and said 'They don't like electrical equipment' The minute he'd said that the bee's started attacking him! They ignored me sat there with my camera. It was amusing watching him run across the field swatting his head...

Prototype Duffus Traps ?
J Darcy replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
So if you could get a stainless trap cheaper than a standard trap you'd go with the standard? Come on Moxy, surely SS is better? If it's cheaper and 5% smaller than FP traps and will certainly last longer than them, I can't see an argument?? -

And that would be my opinion too. I like the concept but as I've said many times as have others. I can't see how you benefit from the added expense. All this talk of stainless!! Stainless will rot (certainly not as fast as steel) but all will Depend on the grade of stainless used to manufacture the traps. There's no way I can see they are going to use a high grade. Not saying it can't be done and they won't but the price difference will be...!!? Well..! Noticeable But let's not confuse the trap body from the wire work. As echoed in the above comment. Once the spring has gone! B -
I'm not good with bees, but I'd say they were two species. But then again to offer a true answer i'd have to google it and that would be cheating.....sorry I can't give a better answer, I don't know much about bees.......

Its lots of protein they need at this stage as well as calcium. I believe. keep us informed....

It's only MO, but I believe the birds can get Botolism and other assorted nasties. Obviously a young birds stomach 'workings' is only a couple of weeks old and might not have the capability to deal with potentially toxic things. I also think that there is a far greater chance of this with shop bought maggots as they are often fed diseased fowl carcases, which is where such ailments could originate, esp salmonella. And, besides, a mealworm is about the same price, packed with protein and can be much easier to handle in the fingers. I could be wrong, but that's my beliefs, and it's based on hand

Not maggots... Feed a mix of tinned dog food, mealworm and baked beans in a syringe if you can do. Looks like he'll be ok in a day or two as he's plenty big enough. Probably concussed...

Prototype Duffus Traps ?
J Darcy replied to earth-thrower's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Sod flatpack!!....I have been speaking to a company that are sending me a couple of 100% stainless steel traps to try out. The price will be cheaper than flatpacks and the delivery will be better too, none of this waiting 6 weeks rubbish! In all the times I have emailed flatpack I have never had a reply! The future, IMO, is going fully SS so that traps will, literally , last a lifetime. The FP 'ultimate' traps still have galv loops, which will deteriorate over time. Obviously, it all comes down to production costs.....but if this thing goes ahead it will be always cheaper than FP. -
Fished for 6 hours today, had many casts, lost only about £30 of lures but nothing except a 2lb rainbow...

RIP Stan. I hunted with him a couple of times and he did like a tipple! Proper character and a genuine hunting man.

I feed my dogs literally hundreds of raw squirrels a year, all with the guts in and they love them! There's never anything left except the odd orange tooth. Olivia, try and find someone who shoots/traps squirrels in your area, your dogs will love them. Oh, and IMO don't feed 'wild' rats....
-
I believe that , in actual fact, they would be illegal. The live fox being held with no food or water in cramped conditions, will lead to a prosecution if the relevant bodies found it. IMO.

"fourteen acre", now stock the genuine article,bud,..... Sorry,....."talpex",i meant. I think you will find that the "talpas" are now history. Magnumtrap are now selling genuine Talpex traps. It doesn't say that on the website ....is it yet to be updated?

Asian not european if I'm not mistaken........ Now, taking a photo of a true wild otter takes some doing..... They're an aquatic willo the wisp!

That's my next plan mate....had to buy more lures first....

Hi, it was a rubber grub, about 6cm long. With a twisty tail.

There has to be something you're doing wrong. Fair enough in the rubble, but every other soil type this trap is the deadliest IMO. I think many people set them too fine....
