  1. Does the Tynedale huntsman still hunt mink? He used to have some good otter hounds.
  2. i,ve bolted big dog mink on a few occasions while ferreting , never ever had them give the big dog ferret any confrontation , remember you get some real vicious ferrets , the only time i ever saw a mark on my ferret,s head was from a large dog stoat that came out in a hurry to escape, mink will probably avoid confrontation , because if injured they won,t be able to hunt . I guess i will never know what gave the ferret a bite and scare that day. Bolted quite a lot of stoats and seen two foxes bolt from a ferret aswell, which on both occaisions took the guns by supprise and escaped!!
  3. good point there alimac well the main reason is if the keeper disturbs the vixen with her cubs in day light you can guarantee she will move them then he has to find them again, we visit the known spots where fox earths have been in previous years[its an earth not a den]and as i stated he has approx 8000 acres of land thats a lot of land.this keeper will not allow terrier men onto his patch so its the rifle and i aint complaining. Well done Cragman and nice shooting Gary! I agree with Alimac's post, as I also think doing the rounds of the dens with the terriers, is the best way to get
  4. Nice read Martin! A good, well known taxidermist Ive used- John Hallet, not too pricey either, but top notch. If you do it youself- good luck
  5. I WISH!!! You know as well as I do that I couldnt hit a Barn Door !!! (with a shot gun anyway).......lol
  6. The best thing to do is as crack man said. Im guessing you are feeding them barley or wheat. Try to feed the ducks out of the lake. eg- to a bit of nearby cover, or up a feeder stream, but somwhere that they wont be able to see the guns, as they get positioned between them and the lake. Its better done as a plan from when you first release the duck, as you just gradually move the feed site further away from the lake until their feeding where you want them. But it sounds like its worth a go as your otherwise stumped. If they are wild duck, then this method probably wont work.
  7. Too far for me ali, but ye know if I went, I would kick yer arse!!!
  8. id fecking scratch off newton rigg if dogs n natives abbilitys are anything to go by HAA HAA
  9. Totally agree with you there ade. I know from sad experience how hard it is losing a good dog. Chin-up mate.
  10. they are videos click on the picture sorry! realised just after I posted!
  11. I will run a game cock, (say Indian Game) with my indian game hens AND my laying hens. So ill get some pure game, and some cross bred meat birds. At the mo' ive got an Orpington cock running with my game and orpington hens. This will hopefully produce some massive meat birds and some pure orpingtons to keep or sell.
  12. You could always buy some young plants from garden center, most do organic aswell!
  13. RAMSONS and WILD GARLIC are two different things WILD GARLIC has thin strap like leaves. A tight sphere of tiny pinkish flowers. Its the bulb used from this plant. RAMSONS (a type of wild garlic) have broad oval leaves a cluster of star shaped flowers. Feck all bulb really, its the leaves used from this plant, like a pot herb. Sorry for being a SWAT!!!....... ive eaten plenty of both, really good for you aswell!!
  14. Get both, both well worth having- in my opinion! Ferrets wont stop the rats comming. I keep ferrets, 30 odd hens, dogs, etc.. My ferrets are always kept in secure spacious hutches. I have had one get out and do a bit of damage to the poultry once, but I forgot to put the latch on the hutch live and learn! Best way to do it, like Skycat said, keep things like sheds hutches raised off the ground, and keep feed stuff well secured, in a rat proof place. As soon as you notice any rat shit, diggings, eggs being nicked etc.. get 'em sorted straight away. Even better, set up some permanent tunnel
  15. Some nice bucks there, well done. Has the one in the pic (second bottom) got a malformed head? looks as though coronets are joined?? I was out yesterday getting a look at some of the bucks on our patch. Saw a couple, one half clean, one smaller buck in full velvet. Havent started yet, but probably will in the next two or three weeks. Looking forward to it!
  16. Was the pic with the grass snakes taken this year? If so well done for spotting them. In my area we only get adders, they are very common on the fells. But I havent seen one yet. This time last year I had seen a few, but it is still very cold up here. Nice pics
  17. This problem will get worse before it gets better , in my opinion. As the organisations you speak of are largely made up of twitchers and anti's! They see any birds being killed as a bad thing and dont want to hear of the benefits. If you kill predators you conserve game! Simple!..... They dont even learn from their mistakes, when they do get some land as a 'sanctuary' it soon becomes an area of lifeless wasteground, as the predators soon finish off whatever unlucky prey species are left. But then they say is just 'natural'. Well for our wildlife to thrive in good numbers and in greater di
  18. Hi joo lee, nice pic of your terrier. Hope you enjoy the site, dont be put off by all the bitching that goes on. All the best DNN
  19. I think your right baggy! As the trap is the type used for fish migrating up stream. Ferretess, do you know if salmon or sea trout get up this burn? If so, i would have thaught it was a trap used by fisheries management to catch fish before they spawn, in order for them to collect their eggs and safely rear the young for release a couple of years later. Thus increasing the numbers of returning adults in years to come. Or might be that the farmer/ landowner whoever, may be catching them for his own ends.
  20. Dosent matter if they were tresspassing or not, a farmer or landowner can only shoot at dogs worrying livestock I belive.
  21. Out of those three I would personally choose the landrover. But if I could choose otherwise it would be a toyota or mitsubishi pick-up, with chunky off roaders!
  22. Wouldnt do it intentionally, mink dont mess around! My friend and I were ferreting the flood defence bank, on Beaufront Estate, some 13 or 14 years ago. We were doing well and working our way along when the ferret came out, all fired up! Hairs on its tail like a pipe cleaner! It had also emptied its arse gland and feck, it stank. Wouldnt go back in, and we then noticed a nasty wound- its nose was split in half. So that was that for the day, we guessed it was mink.
