  1. Not sure where in the country they are based but Bettws Hall are somewhere in wales and are one of the biggest in the UK. They also have shoots in wales and SW england
  2. Might be a southern pansy but still shooting 4 or 5 thousand brace a year! lol I will admit though, from what ive heard, you lads do have a bit of vermin to go at. Not that we have it easy where i am.
  3. What FightTheBan said is about right. I think our trainee is on £170 a week and get a cottage. When i was at college 2/3 years ago i was on £100 a week for the weeks i worked (travelling from home some times and living with headkeeper other times) I then got put on £200 a week and given a caravan when i left college and started full time. Then my first job on the books i got a proper salary, house and contract etc.
  4. Maybe in scotland... Thats why you've got no grouse up there!
  5. When i was at college, we done alot of work with/about deer. We had a danish fella come over and done a course for us on dogs for deer. Although i never wanted to work with deer, it was bloody interesting to lean about training dogs for tracking deer. Anyways, i think the bloke has now written a book which would be well worth getting as he certainly knows his stuff. His name is Neils Sondergaard. Hope this helps.
  6. [NO TEXT TALK] wana swap a spaniel for a lurcher?

    CLOTHING

Swazi and Ridgeline (both from new-zealand) are both excellent makes. Very waterproof and although fairly thin very warm too. If its just for riding round on the quad, and not doing much walking in then i recommend a one piece suit from cabelas! They're far too hot to be walking round the fell in but if your sitting or riding a quad/argo then theyre the mutts nutts.
  8. Now that would have been funny!!! Have to agree though, its a right load of shite!
  9. I used to work on a fairly big partridge shoot down south before i moved on the grouse. We used a mixture of millet, dwarf sorghum and linseed in our cover crops, the linseed and millet provided little cover but lots of food/seeds and the sorghum was the opposite, so together they worked well! The reason we used three different things in the mix is because we could put this down as 'wild bird cover' on certain schemes (the entry level scheme i think) and had it either paid for or got a good lot of money put towards it! Depending on who owns the land/has the farming on it, i would definately
  10. Every keeper north or south i have spoke to have heard of sparsholt so even though it might not be the best practically it still has the name for being the best. failing that, i hear newton rigg comes a close second.
  11. I left sparsholt about a year ago, i was in the year above 'youngairgunner'. The name of sparsholt college still looks good on a CV but its not as good as it used to be. My first year at college was good but wasnt as practical as i'd hoped. Second year was % deer work so i left early when i got offered a job. The main thing is the college getting cut back on funding and instead of staying as 'the best gamekeeping college' they tried to make all the courses average. Without a doubt you learn 10 times more out on work experience than when at college. Basically, for all the lads startin
  12. Im moving up to west yorkshire tomorrow to a new job and i'll be looking for terriers soon so i'll keep an eye out.
  13. Haha that top photo is a cracker! Nice looker that pup is
  14. Glad to hear the dogs ok, consider yourself bloody lucky i bet alot of dogs have died from less. As for ur neighbour.... someone has said, what goes around comes around.
  15. By your fatal mistake do you mean putting the trap in the wrong way round ? Personally i dont see the point in fancy boxes. Just have a simple tunnel with no bottom dig the trap in so it sits level with the ground, make sure there is fresh soil around the entrances
  16. I done a 2 day course at college on tracking dogs the other week. Had a danish bloke come in and do the course for us. He uses labradors but says that english labs are too small to drag down wounded deer. Most commonly used are hanavarians/barvarians, pointers and labs. He also said virtually any dog with a nose will do it but obviously some are better than others.
  17. Im just finishing my second year doing national diploma game and wildlife management at sparsholt. Only doing 2 days a week now so i can work the other days. Its an alright course, second year is pretty much all deer. The main thing is just getting the tickets and the name sparsholt on your CV. Every day life for a keeper is different depending on your shoot. At the minute im spending every day gettin the rearing field ready, but a mate that works on a shoot that buys in poults is builiding pens every day. As for good qualities for a gamekeeper, here goes: The ability to work 25 ho
  18. If you can make one, then make a trap like a side entry larsen trap but without the decoy compartment, hang it up a tree and put a fake nest in the bottom of the trap.
  19. I was wondering that too but i duno. Im gona have a look at the terrier first see what i think but i dout i'll have it. Im having a pup off of my boss this time next year out of a small charcoal bitch he's got at the minute but i wouldnt mind a terrier now as i start full time in a few weeks. Cheers
  20. Come on lads. 30 odd views and no one has an opinion on what i should do. GH
  21. Just got a call from my bosses missus saying she has some freinds that are moving away to Dubai and have a 6yr old dog (with bollocks removed) terrier that they need to re-home. She described it as having markings like her border/patt cross. Got her to put my boss on the phone and he rekons its probably gona be a bit large for foxing but he will probably draw and he will be ok ratting. Im just about to finish college and start working on the shoot full time so i want a terrier to have in the truck and that. My boss said it would probably be worth having for now until he has a litter out of o
