  1. Hi I use 32 Gr felt wad No 5's, that said my shotguns are all 1970's vintage, fixed choke and fairly open. However if you have a 'modern' i.e New gun which is designed for Clays with screw-in chokes then 28 Gr plasi-wads are the design intent, so then you should follow the lead and use them. But in my opinion for live quarry No6 is the mininmum, and No5 the optimum. AndyF
  2. Went out today Sat 17th, on some laid wheat in east Cornwall. I haven't shot over decoys for years, but have all the gear, including a new 'plastic flapper with wings and tail on a bendy stick' type thing. Set up at 10.30 this morning on a patch of flattened crop, covered in pigeon sh+t, no birds around but the farmer had shot a few on Friday at the same spot so that's why we were there. Well nothing doing until about 12.00, then they started coming, 2's and 3's, that swingy / flappy thing was magic, even I shot a hatfull (ME Rifle shooter, all about keeping still, REQUIREMENT shotgun sho
  3. Well: I've had 5 different CZ's, all of them excellent, these days I have a SAKO Finnfire Varmint, but whatever. The best ammo I have found through many 1,000's and 1,000's is Winchester Subsonic or RWS Subsonic. Remington Sub's are very consistant, and as accurate as the other two but I got too many runners on Rabbits, my theory is that the bullet lead in the Remy's is too hard and they dont expand, they also richochet all over the town (same reason). Supprisingly the 'cheapo' Magtech Subs were also very good, but I have been unable to find any for years? Any around your way? AndyF
  4. Yes mattywhit, but you are on a range, shooting plastic bags full of water at a fixed known range, fine and very good, I would like to try that as well! But please NO LIVE THINGS if you miss, you miss. If you nick the corner so what, but if you carve a chunk out of a fox/rabbit/deer and it runs, you have crossed the line, lets not confuse live quarry with shooting rifles for enjoyment. AndyF.
  5. OK I have tried a fair few, the Lohman Circe (sircee) Coyote/Fox plastic is easily the best mouth blown call I have, also you need a Primos mouse squeeker, a green rubber bulb with a squeeky insert at the end. Both are available from the bigger mail order suppliers (Sportsman etc). The only problem with a 'hand job' (ha ha) is that it is not loud enough to call in fox's from afar (that my 'hand job' by the way, others may be better?). The Primos is good for close range once you have a 'customer' in the vicinity, and you only need one hand (ha ha I know). AndyF
  6. I used Remingtons for ages, but got lots of 'runners', my theory is that the lead in the Remy's is to hard, even though they have a (small) hollow point, they just pass straight through, fine if you hit a 'vital' but not if you dont. Ive been using RWS and Winchester Subs for the last 10 years, and my experience is that they are superior and most hits put the Rabbit down for good. AndyF
  7. I clean my .22 about once a year! I don't monitor the volume of shots, and I only use subsonic, but when I clean it I do a Cornish 'Proper Job'. No beastly boresnakes in my house, a proper cleaning rod and a bore guide for the rod, Remington Bore cleaner, wire brush, and swabbed with patches until they come out white. Then I fire 5 or so fouling shots into my lawn to get it right for the next time, check zero at 75 yards. What about you? (SAKO Finnfire Varmint, 16" barrel, SAK Mod, Leupold VX3 2,5>14x50 LRT) AndyF
  8. OK I have a Wildcat Predator 8 on my .270 Win, Brilliant! That said it does need cleaning now and again, full of grit and a weird grey 'talcum' type dust? The .270 is a Magnum calibre and I'm sure it must get pretty extreme inside that can at times! It gets very hot to say the least! Anyway my mates have T8's & PES etc but they are all on lightweight stuff .243 22.250 .223 and the like and they are perfectly ok. But the service from Wildcat is excellent, and if you choose a common thread, you can use your Pred can on a sucession of rifles without issue! AndyF
  9. OK The Eric Brooks kit is the same as what you get from the 'Rimfire Magic' boys, as the rest said a doddle to fit and a 100% improvement. It's a selection of springs and some spacers to take up the sear 'creep' I fitted the lightest spring and the thickest spacer, OH just so much better. If you can be bothered Eric Brooks USA also do a replacement 'Allen key' screw set for all CZ (BRNO), to replace the slotted factory screws, cheap as chips and a nice finishing touch. AndyF
  10. Well I don't know were you boys live, but down here (Devon/Cornwall) I have a job to get a shot further than 200 yards due the geography? Much like bipods, if you lay down around here you cannot see much more than 50 yards anywhere, but particularly at this time of year when the grass is 2 feet tall?? Anyway (for what its worth)I think 600 yard shooting at live quarry is just not on, no need, please don't do it. AndyF
  11. I'm struggling with this, if it is so much better and cheaper why have we not heard of it and where is it. I had a HOG on my HMR..... BRIEFLY.... it was an air rifle mod that my RFD assured me would work...well it was quieter for a few shots (about 6 or and then all the acoustic padding got destroyed!!! The SAK offers an unrivaled package of price and sound reduction and durability and an excellent warranty. There are others quieter but only fractionally and they all cost more.......and the Whisper at £125 is heavier and noisier and a complete waste of money! Please tell me
  12. OK I would suggest a .243, because its Fox friendly and Deer legal also relatively cheap to run, so you've covered all the bases. Maybe get something a bit more 'meaty' later? AF
  13. Look on the Midway UK website. I bought a 'ProChrono Digital Chronograph' from Cabelas in the USA by mailorder (I paid about £100 I think?), anyway to answer your main point my chrony will measure velocity of just about anything squirted through the 'sky screens', including airguns, centrefires and even shotguns, (get close though you don't want to blast your latest toy into next week). Easy to use, and 'muppet' proof (just as well). Also now we are doing 'sums' to calculate ft/lbs Multiply the velocity (measured on your new chronograph) by itself (i.e. Squared) then multiply that answe
  14. I've settled on Winchester (Olin) as my first choice with RWS as a 'next best', I have a SAKO Finnfire Varmint now, but have had at least 6 different Rimfires down the years including 2x CZ, a wood stocked 452 being my best ever for accuracy. The only 'bad-stuff' I have bought was CCI, and the Remington Sub's although accurate enough had very hard bullets that passed right through Rabbits and left me lots of runners. Hope this helps? AndyF
  15. OK Firstly I chose a .270 for Deer, but that was because the rifle had a left hand bolt (I'm a LH spazzy), but a good friend of mine who has been stalking for over 40 years, and owned a gun shop told me that "everyone gets a .243 at first, until they loose a deer, then they get a bigger calibre", he had owned and shot just about everything and his 'preferred' calibre was the 7MM-08, he also had a 30-06 for Reds in Scotland, but he swore by the 08' and I respect his choice because he DOES know what he's talking about. My .270 is in my experience excellent and VERY deadly, but I only shoot R
  16. Well! I shoot a .270 and it is a lightening rod, with 150gr bullets it will floor instantly anything that walks the UK. yes Red stags too. I can only assume you must have endured a 'crappy' Parker Hale 'Nail' rifle with factory ammo and a 'tractor' trigger. I have a .270 Browning A bolt Medalion, with a Leupold LPS scope and a Wildcat moderator, not a gift to anyone, but with my handloads I can put 5 shots inside 2" at 200 yards (lasered) so if you wouldn't want that as a gift, I would like to try your gift? AndyF
  17. OK From my experience of .22 HV, try Winchester Lazer, I have used them in at least 4 different rifles, and they came in with excellent grouping in all cases. I must say that I don't use any HV .22 rimfire these days, just Subsonic. But the 'Lazer' where the best by a mile, only the 'new' CCI Velocitor were in the same class, but more expensive! I think (my opinion only) is that a longer barrel 21"+ is an avantage with HV, my rifle (SAKO Finnfire Varmint) is cut-down to 16", and is a tack-driver with Sub's. Best of luck!! AndyF
  18. Nice shooting! Nurse's etc Oh Dear I might be distracted. Please keep them under control (if you can)! Kill them all! AF
  19. OK Cheap and cheerful! The LEE RELOADERS GUIDE is (in my opinion) the best basic instruction out there. Read it, then read it again! I am an Engineer so it's bread and butter stuff to me, but really reloading is very simple/easy, just take it slowly, and buy 'good' stuff. REGARDS AndyF
  20. How much is Cheaply? Because £150.00 is the very least, £250 is required.
  21. Well, I have a 'Harris' Bench Rest (BR) swivel on all my rifles, (x4), but I never use them in 'anger', I have a Stoney Point telescopic bipod, and carry this with me always, cos were I live if you lay down you can't see more than 25 yards anywhere at any time of the year, so bipods are a complete waste of space. I only use mine for zeroing and/or checking zero off the bonnet of my truck. You need to be able to stand with the rifle parallel to the ground stable and 'wobble' free, no bipod can do this. Range shooters do not 'get it' about this fact, so no need to ask them.
  22. I use the 'Shoot N See' 'stick-on' target spots, I buy mine in America as I am over there quite a lot, but you can get them here, excellent and fairly cheap. Try them!
  23. Well done chap! You did exactly the right thing, Legal well I doubt it? But you did the RIGHT thing, anyone of us who shoot knows the score. Don't shout about it but I support you 100% All the best!
  24. Hi: Throw that 'boresnake' away! Your crown is at risk!! Get a 'proper' boreguide and a Midway UK cleaning rod. AndyF
  25. Yes! The 17hmr is 0.170" the .177 is what it says on the tin, i.e. 7 Thou' smaller, pri*k in a shirtsleeve. Oh dear.
