Hi: The good old BSA Sportsman 'range' of 22's were the 'CZs' of the 50's and 60's. I have never owned one but I've shot loads of stuff with my schoolmates dads gun back then in the mid 1960's, very good little gun for it's day. They are the build quality of a half decent springer airgun, mass produced with iron sights, the box magazine type had a tendency for the Mag floor plate to fall off dumping the guts of the mag and the remaining shells in the grass! DOH! So spare magazines are literally 'Gold dust' and change hands for silly money in the USA particularly where owning a cupboard fu

So What is the Best Rifle Scope?
andyf replied to fireblade_rrw's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Well: I've had lots. But after many years I go to America often so that's my scource! LEUPOLD yes! I have an LPS and 2x VX3 LRT's on my Rifles, OK there not the 'best' if you follow the press, but mine are really top line for me! My shooting collegues have NightForce and Schmidt & Bender and yes they are top gear, but I have the luxury of trying them in the 'real' world and therfore I can report that they are are good but NO BETTER then the Leupold. However if your buying in the EU they are on a par so it's down to you (and you pocket)! See you at the CLA next weekend??? AndyF -
BRNO 22LR Barrel Shortening
andyf replied to wabbit slayer's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You don't say what your budget is? The rifle you're buying is perfectly good as it is with the factory length barrel. Why spend money on cutting down a BRNO (and probably reducing it's sell on value). Look just use it as it is with the moderator that came with it, then if you have the cash and want to upgrade get something 'better' at a later date when YOU have some experience and are better prepared to make a choice. .22's are pretty unbreakable and generally very good, just try it and see? Yes I've shot those cone nosed crackers a few times, I think I've still got most of a box left in my cupboard somewhere? Anyway they are very loud, and not very accurate if compared to milder HV stuff like Winchester Lazer and Velocitor,(which are GOOD). But also in fairness they are no worse than Stingers, probably a bit better. My experience is that a good subsonic through a decent Rifle/Scope will kill anything .22 legal with ease, HV is a little bit more powerful but really not very much! The only time I would consider HV on a regular basis is if I had a semi-auto to get better cyclin

Forget any European products i.e. Ziess etc, they (The USA) have hideous taxes on such things, so you can only buy Leupold or Burris top line stuff cheaper there than here, it's only about 2/3 of the price anyway (i.e. a £1,000+ scope here would be £675'ish there). So buy one stick it your hold baggage and stare into space in the 'green lane' at Gatwick/Heathrow and hope for the best! Make sure you don't buy anything you shouldn't have here i.e. expanding bullet heads, slug loads etc etc as you may walk into a world of hurt here, as 'they' in USA will sell you anything that's legal in the

If I were you I'd get a .223 instead, firstly Hornet rifles are hard to find, but .223's are ten a penny, and if your on a budget then that alone is worth the change to get the choice, ammo is easier to get for the .223' every gunshop in the country has .223 on the shelf, not so the Hornet. The FAC grant is on a par so if you can get a Hornet, you'll get a .223. Anyway the .223 is superior in all aspects of performance, so it's a 'no brainer' really, as for reloading, if you haven't had a centrefire before you will be stunned at the cost of factory ammo(typically £0.90 to £1.20 A SHOT), t

.22 rimfire silencers
andyf replied to SCOTbORDER SNIIIPER's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
My opinion only, but I have had both, the SAK is the 'best', the Parker Hale is fine in terms of it being a 'silencer' but it's too long and too heavy when compared to the SAK, you can get both in black or silver, both are strippable, but the SAK is just that little bit better in all departments. Also I had a 17 Whisper on a 17HMR I had, but they make it for .22 also, this was was a superb bit of kit, BUT it was £125.00 and it was NOT better than the SAK in relation to it's function as a 'silencer'. So if you've got £125.00 to spend and you like quality then the Whisper is the best, -
Oh dear this again! LOOK lay down absoulutely 'anywhere' on your shoot, if you can see 500 yards in all directions from head height (8>12" above ground) get a Harris Bipod immediatly and NEVER take a shot without using it. Nice idea but no FU#KING USE in the real world. If however you can only see 20 feet over the weeds forget it, bipods are for Rifle Ranges, Deserts and Sniper Movies.(Read EVERYWHERE except Bipod city). Get a Shooting Stix type 'stand up' rest because its the only rest worth a light in a practicle sense! AndyF

Hello, I am an engineer by trade and a shooter by choice! I 'think' that the 'smaller' the case it is more likely that case 'Equality' is going to be an issue worth persuing. I have 2 centrefires, both hunting rifles, 1. 22.250 Rem and 2. 270 Win, my opinion is that these are both 'big' and therefore (especially in a 'hunting' round) the case parametrics are diluted by the sheer size and scale of that particular calibre. However when things 'shrink' so does the 'science' attached to the ballistics, the .204 although it is not in my remit, .223 is the smallest I have tried, I am certain

Yes 'We are' (We is Me my Daughter my Shooting Buddy and his Wife) Saturday & Sunday as one day is not enough. I sent off the camping and ticket form 2 weeks ago and have yet to get any response? Anybody else in the similar frame. (Blenheim is a great venue is it not?). Andy F

I have the Foxpro FX3, got it in Tennessee three years ago, great piece of kit, well made particularly the battery pack. I paid nearly $500 (Then £280) for it, and yes I only use about 4 of the 31 preloaded calls, we were on a wild boar hunting lodge in the Cumberland Mountains in South West TN, I for a laugh flashed up the Coyote Howl call. The hunt dogs went berswerk, our guide Cory Looper (ZZ Top look alike) let his 'Hawg' Hound loose (looked like a cross between a Pit Bull and a Rottweiler) and he squared off to my 'plastic torch' squeeker on a hay bale and made ready to munch it! So it

Hia mate. My rifle barrel is 21.5" long (Varmint, so its quite thick and heavy) The mag i zero and shoot mostly on is 6, some times i go up to 9 or 8, but only so often. Hey GOOD POST, it seems I'm not the only one Far~ing about checking ammo out etc. One thing though I have a chronograph and look below:- (1) The Remington are 32-Grains and travel at 1500ftps at the muzzle and according to Remington with a 50-yards zero drop 4.1 inches at 100-yards, but as we all know, different guns, different results! (2) The CCI's travel about 1600ftps and weight 32-Grains. They are a very

You should have applied for both (17hmr and 22rf) as you would get them both with no problem assuming you are going to get a grant in the first place. I bet your 'local' gunshop has a hidden agenda cos he has plenty of .22's for sale and none or not many 17's so don't listen to him. The 17 definately does 'what it says on the tin' fast, accurate and an assured killing range out to 150 yards+, however the ammo is expensive compared to the .22, Like £12 for 50 17HMR and £40 for 500 .22, so you ex airgun users better break open your piggybanks. Then there's the noise, if you have prickly 'Ne

I had a 17HMR for 3 years, (At the same time I also had a .22 Rimfire and a .270 Centrefire), I dont think it's a generic 'Foxing' round, I shot several Foxes with it during it's life with me, none dropped to the shot, that said none got away either, but all needed shooting at least twice, my lesson on this is that as long as the Fox is close enough (my opinion 60 yards max) then a 17 or for that matter a .22RF will do the job OK, because you can head/heart shoot from that range. But to set out to shoot Fox whatever and where ever one pops up then the 17 is just not enough gun. I traded mi

Yes it fits just fine is the answer, I had a SAK on my CZ and then got a 17 Whisper, but the real news is it only looks better, makes no difference at all, NO not even a bit, £37.00 Versus £125, So if you like 'Looks better' and you have £125 to spend on it get one, the Whisper is very well made and engineered, strips easily and also shortens your rifle/mod combo by about 3". You be the judge? AndyF

Yep, I have a Browning A Bolt Medalion in .270, had it for 8 years, I have settled on Reloads of 130 gr Sierra Gamekings on 59gr of R22, also have some 110gr V Max on the same powder in case a fox turns up. Buy the way it doesn't eat brass like my 22.250 does, I am still on the 100 bag I bought when I got the rifle! It's a great cartridge, mine is very accurate, easy 5 shot 1" groups at 100 off a bag. I have a Predator 8 Moderator fitted without it the noise is 'hideously' LOUD. I mainly shoot Roe, but get fair few Fallow I have yet to lose a Deer with it, however my buddies .243 can't cla

I've got a Leupold RX-1, it's really useful for all sorts of reasons, Yes you can range anything you are going to take a shot at, but in reality I rarely use it that way, for Zeroing it's a doddle to carry the target out and range back to my truck, also for pigeon decoying takes the guessing out of setting the decoys 35 yards out from the hide for optimum pattern range. But mostly when I set my portable highseat up in a new or different location, I use the first hour or so when I have disturbed the place to range all and any of the local features, i.e. trees, fence posts, or anything else

I can't beleive the police are so strict!
andyf replied to mangy1983's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
As someone else said more to this than meets the eye etc. When was the last time the Police walked into YOUR HOUSE and found you asleep just because they were passing and 'called in' Yeh Right! He was probably pissed up and phoning around gobbing off etc etc The police are never within miles of my house let alone coming in un-announced and finding me 'Asleep', so NO NOT BELIVING THIS SH*T at all. Anyone with Firearms needs to be 'squeeky clean' we have all seen what happens when it goes wrong, and WHO ENDS UP GETTING THE BAD STUFF that results? That's right me you and everyone else who is -
I use a 22.250 Ruger No1, with my handloads, my buddy uses a .243, I used to have a .223? All of them are just fine, the reality is at 'normal' ranges / conditions all of the above are the same, the margins are very close in practical terms none of them are 'best'. The age and condition of your rifle but mostly the scope you have is really the defining 'fine line' line between 'only' OK and 'the best'. I have a .270 for Deer, but my '.243 buddy' has just one rifle for both Foxing and Deer, so I guess he can not ever have the wrong rifle with him can he? A query for you reloaders out there?

I've had experience of several, and own one Wildcat Predator 8 on a .270. All of the types I've tried or 'heard' are pretty much the same. The Aseutra was about the best, but it's big, fat and extends the rifle too far, fine on a 'range' gun but not so great on a hunter. Also it depends on where you are when you shoot the rifle, if in open country with just low hedges and large empty fields the sound dissapates very nicely, and you get as near the 22 rimfire as it is going to get (not that close). However firing into a closed area with tall trees / woods etc on two sides the reflective noi

You are looking at two different things here, one is buying and importing 'something' from outside UK and importing it, 20% VAT and import duty for a start. BUT two it's a firearm, remember you can't even take a hatpin of a bottle of water on the plane, I recall that such things need to be notified to the airline ahead of the flight and most budget carriers don't allow firearms (not because they oppose guns it's just to much hassle). Then I can imagine the 'official' reception a Gatwick!! I went to Tennessee Wild Boar Hunting a couple of years ago and initially thought I'd like to take my

I have 3 Shotguns, and 3 Rifles (.22 Rimfire, 22.250 and .270) That is 6 + an HW100 .177 Pre-charged not on 'ticket'.? AndyF

Oh 'Muppet' as though an Springer air rifle trigger would fit in a bolt action CZ rimfire, ARE YOU MAD, NO NO NO, get real. I hope you don't fix your car? (No you probably don't,which clearly is just as well). The Rimfire Magic 'Brooks Trigger Kit' is what you need, but as you clearly have not the slightest idea regarding Engineering or Technology get someone who does to do the job!

What cleaning rod for the .17HMR?
andyf replied to LordGamebore's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Get a 'Dewey' from Midway UK, the best I've found, don't faint at the price that's one of the down sides of shooting 17! Also the brass 'brushes' only last 3>4 uses as they crush over because the wire 'bristles' are so short, so buy 6 at a time I got mine from 'Rimfire Magic' and they were fine. -
best centrefire rifle in 223
andyf replied to one shot paddy's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Saur 'Wolverine' no better, plenty close, but none better, (except a Custom Callum Ferguson) but that's another subject. I had a Remington VSSF, very, very, good but still outclassed by the Wolverine. Remember though we are splitting hairs here! Most 'cooking' rifles (most of which listed in the other posts) are perfectly good. But if you really want 'best' and you'll need to kill your piggy-bank it's the Wolverine all the way!!
