What to look for when buy a second hand gun?
andyf replied to 03milesR's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Hi;; Well my only 'practical' and 'easy' thing, is look at the gun, but MOST especially the screws, if it isn't Million $$$ gun (I guess it's not)?. If the screws are bruised bent or damaged DONT buy it (unless it is VERY cheap). Anything rifle or shotgun that (in 2012 money) is less than £500 is a NAIL, and a NAIL is as a NAIL does. If you have to use 'nails' get used to it, they are not that bad, you can 'tune' nails to an OK level if you are ready to try. -
Hi: I've got my 'deerhunter' trousers, wore them today as it is! (Hunting deer today, but the deer wern't playing and did'nt show up?). They are just great, only thing is maybe a bit 'hot' in mild weather, but other than that excellent! AndyF

Hello: I zero at 50 yards, as that's pretty much the actual 'Rabbit' range' near me? The .22 drop 6" at 100 yds so I can compensate fairly easily! Good Luck!

Hi: Sorry bud, but NO, 'shorts' cannot be used (as you already know) also there is NOT a magazine or other adaption that will allow you to use your 'stubbies'. Your best bet for using them is to buy a lever action (tube mag) .22, I suggest a Browning/Miroku BL15, look in 'guntrader uk' plenty sub £200! Andy F.

Hi: I usually only use Winchester Subsonic's, these are easy to get around here and have proven to be very consistant over at least 12 years of use, so in my book that's good! I have tried most of the 'others' mostly the likes of Eley and RWS, and to be honest these have also been very good, they don't shoot to the same 'zero' spot as the Win but the same could be said the other way around. The only 'duff' stuff I've encountered was CCI subsonic, thankfully I only bought a couple of hundred, all 'crack' or 'phut' never knew what next, but maybe that was just a crappy batch? Recently I wa

Hi: Go on Ebay, plenty of the plastic (sorry 'Resin' oh! ok plastic). Cheap as chips and OK as well, had metal ones in my day but no more. AndyF -
Hi Arfon: A very 'twisty' question! Your rifle has a 1 in 9 twist rate, so the total 'twistyness' (made up word), is 2.22 twists from the lands to the end of a 20" barrel. In a nutshell fairly tight, so should be OK for heavier bullets as well as the 'normal' 55 grain factory stuff. AndyF

Hi: This is what I do (Devon & Cornwall Constabulary). I send a letter to the Firearms admin, stating (e.g.) that 'I have sold the Winchester OU 12G shotgun Serial Noxxx xxx into the permanent keeping of Mr XX of Address 'so and so' Shotgun Certificate number xxxxx-xxxxxxx. Please remove this shotgun from my Certificate No yyyyy-yyyyyy. Thats it! It's worked for me fine for over 35 years and 'many' guns. Hope this helps! AndyF

Hi: I have an old Beretta 303, 26" barrel, and it has been (and remains) my 'best buddy' shotgun, I also own several 'fancy' (i.e. Expensive) S/S & O&U guns which are also 'very good' but cost me unspeakable money. For decoying and Foxing the B303 is my first choice, it likes 32gr felt wad No5 shot (for birds) and 50gr BB or SSG for Fox. I live in a world were Semi-auto's are NOT WELCOME on bird shoots, but if I could use it I would! AF

OK The CZ/brno it's all to do with 'how old', assuming it's a gunshop selling the rifle, if t says CZ it's 'newer' than 1995. if it says brno it's before that! BUT all that is 'tosh' really, check the ACTUAL rifle out, if the screws are unmarked, the stock undamaged, it may be 30+ years old BUT it's a diamond, however if it's 'graunched' screws, and rough as a badgers ARS#, then leave it. At this time, if you can resist the 'sales team', and a CZ/brno is on your shopping list, just buy a 'new' one! (CZ Varmint HB). AndyF

220 swift or .223 remi how do they compair for fox?
andyf replied to patdahat's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Whats all this cr~p about 55gr .243? NO it wont shoot faster or flatter, nothing wrong with the .243 it has it's place, but 55gr (do your homework bud). In the UK I would say that if your land can justify a 22.250 and you might get a deer then go for a .243 as it's the 'same' really and it's Deer legal. But if your in 'Fox' only then the 22.250 is the king, I have a 22.250 and a .270Win, I reload, but anyway as the original post was about .220 Swift, factory ammo for the Swift is 'rocking horse sh*t', so don't even think about it, unless you are a 'reloader' Geek. The .223 is 'mighty fin -
Hi: Personally I prefer a bolt, as has been said Semi's are a bit unreliable in terms of cycling, but this is I believe because most of use subsonics and moderators and the reloading mechanism doesn't like and wasn't designed (in most cases) for the lighter recoil of the lower power subsonic shells. I have owned quite a few different .22's over 30 odd years, and had two different Semi's, and both worked fairly good if I used HV ammo. As for accuracy I didn't think there was much in it, true my later bolts are more accurate, but I'm sure that's more to do with expensive rifles and scopes th

Hi: That's plenty of acres, and you should have no problem with ANY centrefire, BUT as the others have said it will possibly depend on where those acres are! Footpaths, roads, housing estates etc may be an issue but probably not. Good luck, I have a 22.250 you wont be dissapointed! AF

Hi 9mm garden gun is a Rimfire, Brass cased shotshell, that's why the shells are so hideously expensive, and hard to find. Also because they are rimfire you can't even reload them. I had one given to me years ago (1970's), it's not noisy but only good for small birds and rats etc out to about 30 feet, the one I had was an Anschutz single shot bolt action. I used up the shells given to me with it then traded it in for 410 Webley, (which I still have). Nice little gun but the ammo-price kills it deader than the Rats you'll get with it. AndyF

Hello: The .22RF is ok as long as it's only 50>75 yards, but really it's not enough gun. If it's what you can get where you have permission, then OK. I have lots of rifles, and plenty of land, but I can only carry one at a time, so I still shoot the odd Fox with my 22 but only at a push. My 22,250 is what is needed, no runners from that 'bad boy' , maybe keep a magazine of high velocity CCI's in the back pocket just in case?

Hi: I use .270 had it for 7 years now, (killed a Roe today with it, nice 75 yard head shot through the trees). Mine is a Browning A Bolt Medalion, (left hand) + Predator 8 Moderator, all I can say is I have NEVER lost a Deer with my .270, my buddy has a .243 and it's ok, but he has had a few 'runners'. I handload, with 59 grains R22 and a 130 grain Sierra Gameking's, well yes it is a sledgehammer for Roe, but mine is very accurate, it will put 3 in a 1/2" at 100 yards. The only downside is without a moderator it is hideous LOUD LOUD LOUD.

Hi; There's nothing to touch the CZ series out there (for the money), I've had two down the years, and if it wasn't for the 'rules' I would have kept them. The 16" barrel is just fine, I had a 16" 17HMR American and it was excellent. As has been said an Eric Brooks ('Rimfire Magic') trigger kit fixes the 'tractor' trigger, (By the way it's just a set of springs and a roll pin spacers, you pick the one's you want, and if you can wire a plug you can fit it yourself). I have a Finnfire Varmint these days and it is easily the best Rimfire I have ever used, but the CZ is so close you won't not -
Best 12 bore cartridge for pheasant
andyf replied to andyH1966's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
Well: I have 2 guns I use for game shooting, both Winchester's, one is an O/U 12G Pigeon Grade Skeet, the other is a 12G S/S Model 23 Pigeon Grade, both are fixed choke. I have used both for over 25 years, and the 'best' cartridge for me is a No 5 Shot 32gr Felt Wad of some description, I use LyleVale at he moment as that's what my local supplier (Dave Dingle/Cart Ridge in south Cornwall) has and they are fine. I believe more 'Modern' guns with screw in chokes etc perform just as well/better with plasi-wad 28gr loads, but I dont have any of those? The Pheasants don't seem to be able to te -
Hi Barky: Best advice is apply for a .22 Rimfire AND a 17hmr, assuming you have decent acre's etc you will (with your background) get them with no problem, the Centrefire(s) can come later. Anyway as you apparently have no 'rifle' experience on record, it's probably best to cut your teeth on the rimfires anyway, you'll have a lot of fun doing so! By the way the .22 is the way in, cheap ammo and decent range/killing power, the 17hmr is an expensive plaything, (and in my opinion not that special). Later a 22.250 maybe the way to go unless you have Deer 'on the menu', but beware Centrefire R

Hello! Those .22 shotshells are no good at all for ferals, you'd need to be point blank and some. The effective range (for mice etc) is about 10 feet, and even then you'll get runners if you don't centre pattern him. If you must get a box, and try a shot at a cardboard box from 12 feet you'll see what I mean. The CCI type have the blue plastic see through 'bullet' and you can see the shot through it. We always found the all Brass Eley's with the crimped end (like a blank) were better, and the shot is bigger. Only use them in a bolt gun and take your silencer off first, cos if its got pla

Governments response to the firearms enquiries is out
andyf replied to markha's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
The Pime Minister (Tory) has a firearms certificate and Stalks deer! The rest of them are soft RED W***kers who want your guns, so you can't have them!!! your choice boys/girls AndyF -
Hi: I have had several 22.250's, my current rifle (2 years) is a Ruger No1 single shot, it's very accurate and nice to use. The trigger is only 'alright' but that's compared to the decent factory bolt guns i've owned (Remmy VSSF and a Browning Varmint with a Timney spring). If you can live with the single shot thing (no problem for me) I'm sure it would be a good choice, a good one can be had for £500 >£650. I reload, and I'm certain ammo is the key with hot centrefires, all my '250's shot well with 52Gr Sierra Matchkings on 37,5 Grs of R15, I didn't have much luck with 'Varmint' bul

Any 17HMR/22WMR will fit, 'old' ones are steel, 'new' ones are (shite) plastic. Get a couple of spares from somewhere else, the 452 is a very good rifle, just throw a bit of money at the Mags. AndyF

having trouble with zeroing my browning 223 x bolt
andyf replied to arfon's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Zeroing needs a set of 'rules' to be observed. Your Rifle and Scope are very good top end stuff, so I doubt any issues lie there, assuming your mounts are decent and tightened properly, you should be ok. Try to pick a nice level wind free 'range to set your rifle up, you really MUST rest your rifle on a sand bag or on a Harris swivel bipod, and ideally off a table (or 4x4 bonnet as a second choice). I bet if this your first centrefire and you've fired off £30.00 of ammo and hardly got on the paper this has been a bit of a shock? You must stick with one make and one bullet weight only unti -
Hi: Yes you must always size new brass, if you dont the bullet will fall straight down the bottleneck, try a bullet head in an unprimed new case to see what I mean. I only neck size my centrefires after the first firing, this seems to improve consistancy, but I always 'try' a bullet head in the first few to check that the neck tension is working, if it is you cannot push the bullet into the case by hand. Good question though. AndyF
