  1. Four years I have used and abused my 3.5 inch Hatsan, never cleaned often enough very rare it hicups cept to remind me it does need cleaning now and then , had thousands of cartridges through it including magnums and no spares needed not even an O ring . Its one of them makes you get a good one or a bad one , love em or hate em. I dont love my Hatsan but for what it cost and the warranty you get I could throw this one away and buy another .
  2. between 30 and 45 rpm usual rotary speeds.
  3. Ita more a matter of what fits and feels good to you rather than barrel length, some barrel lengths are a little more preferable for different forms of shooting but to shoot any gun well it needs to feel right for you, come to the mount correctly and a good fit.
  4. If it has a small turnscrew on a short tube on the underside they are designed to mount on a bouncer rod or rotary arm. Useing on a bouncer mount the decoy on the bouncer pushed into the ground at an angle to mimic a bird flying into or near your pattern , bird mounted into the wind.
  5. Pigeon have been real hit and miss in my Essex area .
  6. Nice bit of shooting for a cpl of hours , well done .
  7. Nice , will be glad to get on some drill myself, hopefully some will be in this week.
  8. This post's a good idea, so many times the same questions are asked by newbies. While off work for a long period and with the newbies in mind I sat and wrote a paper on the basics from gun to decoying to pass some time. Just recently again off work I gave it a re-write and added some pics and diagrams anyone that wants a copy is welcome to it, im no writer but its been out to a few folk on another forum and had nice comments . Just message me your e-mail addy and i will forward it .
  9. Odds on shooting rifles in the forces you are closeing one eye and aiming at the bird , hence hitting the landed birds but notso many flyers. Its a common fault when changeing from rifle to shotgun, closeing one eye affects your range assesment. Coaching will certainly help you on the right track. A rifle is aimed a shotgun is pointed is the rule, a simple excersise is to point your finger at a small object both eyes open, then holding on the object look down your arm, you may not be 100% on it but close enough for a shotgun shot spread, try it on a passing aircraft allowing lead (with just a
  10. Ashooting buddy of mine is on the look out for a bitch springer pup as he is retireing his old girl, anyone can help with a contact in the essex area for a pup appreciated.
  11. They work, had mine for 3 years , been squashed , trod on , shot and they still work with a little maintainance here and there.
  12. i was taught with a bird comming head on to blank it out with the barrel, a bird going directly away point at its feet, important for all shots to keep the gun on the move with the flight of the bird and follow through, works for me, ok most of the time
  13. Pick any pricked birds and dispatch them immediatley, any dead ones belly up in the pattern remover or place correctly, other than that leave them where they fall unless the birds seem put off from coying, then have a brief tidy up, the less you show yourself on the field the better.
  14. study the field you intend shooting and look for a flightline, taking some time to just watch can have benefits in setting up in the right place,. set your hide up under or a close as you can get to the pigeons flightline ( a flightline if your not sure is the route the birds constantly take on the day across a field to land or pass over). place the decoys faceing into the wind in a V or horseshoe shape, the closest decoy to you 10 to 15 mtrs and the furthest from you 40 mtrs , with the wind at your back if you can is favourable, the decoys approx 2 mtrs apart from one another and maybe a few
  15. Plastics tend to shine a lot if they get wet........so flock are better. But best of all (and i have always done it) is to use the real thing.......! I always keep 8-12 of the best pigeons from a previous shoot to use as deeks. Better than anything i find, and i always snip off one of the legs of each of the frozen birds so i know which are the fresh ones after a shoot Rolfe. lol i use to do that but then i havent been decoying in a couple of years as the person i used to go with sold all his gear so im starting from scratch ill probabley buy some of them flock shell ones to start of
  16. they are straight out in a fork but i put the crows in side ways, faceing them in the rotation of the magnet sounder ahh me glasses are ok then does putting the crows on sideways not make it difficult for the wing spread? im guessing the arms are not metal rod so they can be bent to accomodate the bird cradle in the normal fashion. but if it works fine that way nice one.
  17. looks good mate, you can use some of the dimmer switches from cars for a speed controler , or an old ford heater coil, situated under the bonnet at the back by the heater fan in a small metal cage. Just one question the bird holders are they straight with the arms or angled with the way it rotates ? Not sure im looking at it right or me glasses are wonky
  18. Nice work, i love homemade kit, very rewarding when the birds come in
  19. Did have my poor brain cells working there hope it works well for you
  20. A started motor sounds a bit on the heavy side and the battery drain would be considerable , the usual motor to use is a wiper motor, they are geared and less battery drain than a starter. ive made several magnets my current one being made from an old battery drill, use the trigger as the speed controler , made it lightweight for use with hypa flaps and quick fit together . pic shows with plastics mounted on it.
  21. 10p a bird nowt for sqwabs round our way , tight git stitched me once never again, i give em away , eat em and the dog and cat love em. older birds are a stronger taste best in a pie with some steak etc, sqwabs a much more delicate taste the breast meat cut into thing strips and stir fried with leak onion carrot mushroom or whatever you fancy. last price i heard for europen retaurant price for a pigeon dish (where most of the dealers birds go) was £16. Shame its not eaten more in this country its a tastey meat, Whittinstal has tried !
  22. Its one of the problems wth flocks of birds comming in, maybe follow the leader principle if he don't wanna come in none do or the many eyes spot the dec's as plastic or just dead real birds, or maybe just passing by and noseing, it happens to all of us at some time or other no matter what gizmos you use or how well your placement and fieldcraft. As the flocks break up as the warmer weather approaches the decoying will become a little easier but look and learn from the birds themselves as they feed and how they flight and couple that with fieldcraft and tips from many of the guys on here and
  23. A quiet day on rape today , maybe the artificials didnt do the job for woodpigeon, but they did for this guy who tried to rip the head off of 4 of my rubber dec's for 5 minutes, was amusing to see him standing on then and stretching the dec's head about looking a lttle confused why it wouldnt come off ! , apologies for the blown up pic quality, i need a new camera.
