Well done, pretty tidy ?

You can give it a coat of resin after the glass application has hardened, it will help the matting to resist fibres being nail scrapped up and assist a little towards moisture resistant.

what ones are they , I use 2 different remotes ex oriental and they work fine at 30 to near 40 mtrs . Terrain can cut the range down so I add 2 to 3 mtrs of lead from the reciever to the flapper and mount the receiver on a 30 cm peg closer to the hide .

I use 2 to 3 meters of red and white hazard tape on bamboo cane's , it whips around nicely in a breeze.

For all day use a 17 AH battery will do the job for a standard rotary, light weight rotary's can use a lesser AH battery .

New Fiberglass Roof Costs
Denny essex replied to devon flighter's topic in Home Stuff, Building and Leisure
I have laid glassfibre on many roofs , ponds and all sorts of mouldings for over 40 years in the trade before retiring. I have not had or any of my associates had an expansion crack, not saying it cant happen but I never experienced it even on roofs I have done on southend sea front, including some roofs that were stoned/chipped for walking on . -
Not that hard to glassfibre it yourself , spent 40 years doing glassfibre work. quantity mix is easy with inexpensive measuring equipment and not as critical as surgery. A little practice on an easy part 1st. Materials from a local supplier or evilbay. If you are smooth concreting it out minimal lay is all thats needed and if you can use a paint roller on long handles you could save a respectable amount of dosh .

New To Decoying , What's The Best Pigeon Decoys
Denny essex replied to David.evans's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
The easiest to use and transport in my opinion are flocked shell decoys with spring sticks , un-complicated to use and transport and wont break the bank. Start with 10 or more , add real birds to the pattern as shot. Start with a horse shoe pattern or L shaped pattern with the open area being the kill zone. There are diagrams around on the net that will give you a better visual idea.- 1 reply

A gun that fits you reasonably well is an important factor more than what style , as above second hand shotguns can be quite cheap but get someone with some shotgun knowledge to go with you if buying privately, more so if you do not know the important things to look for, from a gun shop you will get their rep and backup if something is not quite right. Side by side shotguns tend to be lighter than an over and under gun and many semi autos, the lighter the gun the more recoil especially if the gun is not a good fit can be uncomfortable and in a severe case painful to use. How Close Do You Set Your Magnet Up ?
Denny essex replied to Daz Harrison's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
I set mine within shooting range as pigeon have been known to "bomb" it , anything from 15 mtrs to 40 mtrs depending on the way the birds react. Move as you feel to the birds reaction to both rotary and pattern. -
Pigeon Pigeon Everywhere, But Where I Am!
Denny essex replied to brucemyster's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Good luck for tomorrow. -
Keep an eye out for birds on drill this time of year, if they can get seed rather than rape thats more than likely where they will be, good luck.

Pigeon can get used to any scarer IMHO, the knack is they have to keep being moved every 2 to 3 days to stand any chance of working. I have seen pigeon feeding in numbers around a gas banger on rape , every time it went off they jumped a metre in the air and came back down and carried on feeding, Recently I decoyed an area where pigeon were feeding on rape, I set up 100 metres from a hawk scarer, I decoyed 1 bird the hawk 100 plus , I should have sat with the hawk.

Thats good glad you got a result with no monies involved.

Thats a lot of money the farmer wants for free pest control, if your putting down pens and feeders for game and paying for the sole shooting rights to that land then a fee could be acceptable, but if just for pigeon and vermin shooting as pest control I would say thanks but no thanks. My opinion is if your shooting pigeon and the likes of rabbits etc that damage and eat crops your both doing one another a favour , the farmer gets free pest control you get free shooting, well almost with cartridge cost's.

Problem, Permission Just A Tad Away From Flight Line
Denny essex replied to Craig Fosse's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Yes I have been using them for over 7 years, still the originals, they have had repairs and been shot several times but still work. I like to keep the weight down on kit as all my farms are walks to set up, so I have made a light weight 6 volt rotary from a kids toy for hypas only. I have a real bird rotary but rarely use it and I dont run a freezer for birds. I'm not saying they are better than real birds but the wing movement on the hypas even on a still day I think could be an advantage at times, the pellet holes in my hypas where pigeon have occasionaly "bombed" the rotary lay prof to th -
Problem, Permission Just A Tad Away From Flight Line
Denny essex replied to Craig Fosse's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
In your situation I think a rotary will be of benefit, birds willing they can be attracted to the movement of the rotary with and at times without a layout of decoys, you would have to play with the positioning of both dependant on flight line and wind direction. I use hypaflaps on a rotary and they can work well for wing movement if you have a shortage of real birds to use,. -
Flappers, Lofties Or Rotary??
Denny essex replied to jonno1968's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
They all work on the right day, in other words a rotary may work great one day and not another sometimes making pigeon shy away , same with a flapper, bouncer or peckers , bouncers are the most economical and will add movement and some direction for the pigeon if used correctly, spring pegs will add movement to shell decoys with some wind to help and cheaper still.. Your budget and walking distance to your chosen spot ( or chosen spot of feeding pigeon) should also be a consideration. It is more a trial it and see thing , as for now at my age I try to travel as light as I can, but on sayin -
Good for you, dont worry about the wind some of the most productive days can be when its very windy, as the birds fly into the wind approaching the decoys as though intending to land they will slow down.
-
Good advice above , but be prepared to get plenty of knock backs from farms but dont let it put you off. Add a little knowledge of crop identification and farming times from drill to harvest would not go amiss as well as quarry identification, both in case you are asked by a farmer or in this day and age anyone that pokes their nose in. As for equipment much can be D.I.Y made, adapted and rustled together from house hold stuff laying around the likes of old clothes props, bambo canes for hide poles , skips for some grey guttering (with permission to remove) can be cut and painted for decoys.
-
Like any of the kit we use some days you need them some days you dont, they can create more interest in coming closer to your decoy pattern by simulating feeding and movement attraction. For me all the flappers ,bobbers, peckers, bouncers, rotary's etc all work when used correctly, but then so can a couple of rough decoys sitting in a field on the right day. Its the "hard to to get them in range and get their interest to decoy" days for a shot that a gizmo may come in very handy and be the right tool to increase the bag, the same as any needed tool in a tool box to do the job correctly. What Is The Range Of A 12 Bore Shotgun?
Denny essex replied to Jesse White's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
Set your furthest decoy out at 40 yards if decoying and shoot within that range until you are happy with your accuracy and sight/size recognition up to 40 yard then slightly longer shots may be taken . Assuming your shooting pigeon with an acceptable shot size for the range around number 6 size. -
Never made one but seen many home made ones , even out of bamboo cane and wire for wing spreaders
-
Quality flocked shells work well, even if they get a little wet in a rain shower, a quick shake and they are dry and no shine.
-
I bought some a few years ago, they worked but I wasnt impressed with the decoy mount and in strong wind they tend to flop the decoy over. I did make some from band strapping from a skip and used sticky backed velcro to mount to the decoys if you fancy making and trying a cheaper option I now stick to JP style spring pegs mixed with a few decoy dippas for movement when the winds not on.
