    tis a hard question that as as collies esthetically throw such a variation build & height wise even litter mates differ & this is also the case in lurchers with a good dose of collie. temperament wise i think you want a type that shows determination to see a job through, andy's description a dog that works cattle would seem apt as i would imagine they would be a handful especially when they have calves in tow i know everyone says you want a leggy well boned type & ideally yes you would but unless it's parents & litter mates have all thrown similar your probably not going

    all good points plus the dogs of old had no lamps so no one was expecting em to go out & get 10/20 + rabbits a dog that could ratch about & get 2 or 3 rabbits & or a bird would be highly prized, some times we forget this when you read of highly prized dogs of long ago

    daz do you think anyone breeding a 3/4 collie ain't gonna use a racy one,an putting it to a half cross ain't gonna slow it down & a 1st cross won't have as much stamina i can assure you of that i've had both & now have a 9/16 collie which i bred by putting my 3/8 collie over my 3/4 & none come close to the stamina of the 3/4 as has been said they lack a gear & if i was after a lamping dog i wouldn't go for the 3/4 & if the land was mainly pasture nor would i go that way but on moorland or scrubby land or in woods you wouldn't go far wrong for a general knockabout mooc

    4 of my close mates got hancock mate,totall of 8dogs,ones good ferreter,not bad on lamp and quite obedient,but the others are total shit,ones taller than a camel and cant run,and the rest aint much cop atall,and not one of em takes larger game that could say just as much about your mates as the dogs.8 dogs & not a decent one among em hows this bloke stayed in business for the last thirty years

    that ain't strictly true you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear & as all dogs are individuals they all won't make the grade or reach the same heights no matter who fetches them up, then there's peoples differing standards, some folk like a dog to hunt up,stalk or like a dog to think for itself others hate those things.some will have a better nose,be faster or easier trained, even litter mates.in all litters there is variation some may have the potential to be wold beaters but some i'm afraid will always be lemons

    Making them them more expensive wont do fuckall apart from bring even more muppets into the game..... You pay decent money for something your going to look after it far better than a freebie.. i'd have to disagree folk value feck all these days, as has been said it's all to do with image soon as they find that dogs don't get em selves fit & it needs time & effort,it's easy to say the dogs shit & get rid & on to summet else less demanding & there is plenty of pricey pedigrees in the shelters not just mongrels
