What Night Vision For Rabbits with .22lr?
C3PO replied to dave1372's topic in Night Vision & Thermal
Probably the Cobra Merlin with the 90mW Dipol L3 Laser option. Should give you a reasonable image out to yards. An ordinary laser operates at a particular wavelength ... an IR laser operates at a particular wavelength of between 780nm and 900nm. There are two types of illuminators for night vision: lasers and LEDs. The former pack a lot more punch and are lighter, but a bit more expensive. The LED illuminators generally give a "cleaner" and "clearer" flood of IR light out to ranges of about 50 yards, depending on the power, but have considerably less range. Talking of power, a 90mW laser -
Hi, Price is £999. Here are some pictures through the Elite taken on a camera. Images genuinely representative of the image, except in RL the image is sharper as I had the shakes a bit holding the camera and rifle steady. In this first picture, the tree is 45 yards away and the bushes at the back ~55 yards away. In the second picture, a ####**ing huge rat appeared -- at least I think it was a rat. I\'m afraid the pic is a bit blurry, but you get the idea. Scope at x6 (plus x1.7 for the native magnification of the unit, so x8). Laser at widest possible beam setting. http://i152.p

With the standard LED Ir illuminator, I can identify rabbits out to about yards. The limiting factor is the x5 magnification of the scope as anything more and the image is too dark. However, I have just added a N350 laser to the combination and 200 yards + is easily achievable. Up to 60 yards I can use the scope at x15 (yes 15), and the image is very good still. At x5 magnification, I have to use the laser on its widest beam setting, otherwise the illumination is too bright.

Hi everyone, I posted this on a couple of airgun sites and thought it would be good to show here too. I have on loan for a month a virtually new GB Sights Elite add-on night vision attachment. I'm trying this out over my conventional night set up. It's married up to a Yukon 100mW IR illuminator. Spent about 30 minutes in the garden and thought I'd post my findings. Background Been looking to get a new NV unit after owning various units, which have been, in order Yukon NVRS-F (Gen 1), Cobra Merlin (Gen 1), SM-3S26 ("HyperGen" 2+) and finally a standard unit, LE

There's only one cohice really then: the Theoben Evolution. A superbly accurately rifle. Get it from Ben Taylor and he'll do a few things to make it even smoother.

First of all, I'd turn up in normal, smart-ish clothes ... avoiding jeans. Have a shave too, hehe. Just simple start with the following after the door opens: "Good afternoon, I'm sorry to trouble you but was wondering if I might help with with any problems you might have controlling vermin such as rats / squirrels / rabbits / rooks / pigeons {etc}. I'm an airgun enthusiast and full member of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, and therefore responsible and fully insured. If I can be of any help to you please let me know ... here's my card."

For a maximum of £500, I'd say go for the S410 too. Very good rifle. Marry it up with a Bushnell Legend 5-15 x 40 scope from www.arcadian-sales.com -- very reasonably priced from there -- and you have a super hunting outfit.

And very loopy trajectory too. Here's something I posted elsewhere, at FAC levels, but gives you good data: I ran a few figures through chairgun for two set ups as shown below: .22: 32ft/lb, Weihrauch Magnum 22-grain pellet .25: 50ft/lb, Beeman Kodiak 31-grain pellet Trajectory is below (blue is .25) At various ranges, the power levels are as follows: .22 30 yards: 27ft/lbs 55 yards: 22ft/lbs yards: 18ft/lbs .25 30 yards: 40ft/lbs 55 yards: 34ft/lbs yards: 29ft/lbs So, fairly similar trajectory but with greater energy in the pellet for .25. The tra

You're fine to shoot them if they're causing you problems and if you're more than 50 feet from the centre of a highway which otherwise might cause distress to people if you were within that distance. Ensure that pellets don't leave your boundary and you should be fine.

Today had been quite quiet on the rat front -- despite there being a fair amount of corn out to feed the pheasants which visit the garden on a twice daily basis. That is until this evening. In the kitchen I looked towards the small bush from which rats have been using as cover for raids on the grain (this bush hosts a hole going into a rat run). I noticed some rustling and spotted the familiar eyes of a rat between two leaves. I went upstairs and took position with the HW100K T from my favoured "sniping" position ... 8 yards away with gun and scope zeroed to said distance. Lately the rats

Two more young rats from this morning:

Yup -- that first rat was like something out of I Am Legend.

Good stuff! Well tonight, apart from a great race, there is another big bonus to watching the Le Mans 24 Hours race through the night: trips to the kitchen can often uncover any crafty rat that has so far eluded me. Tonight was a perfect example. I wondered into the kitchen shortly after 0100 and saw a large-ish rodent scuttling towards the corn. Went to my No.1 Sniping Position with the HW100K and waited for him to return. Sure enough, 15 minutes later he was back and a shot to the head was promptly delivered.

Another one tonight: I think I've successfully sorted the adults, now it is just the younger ones.

I'd just returned home from doing some groceries shopping and was washing my hands in the kitchen and looked out into the back garden to lock eyes on the largest rat I had ever seen on our property. He sauntered out from the bushes as bold as brass to eat the corn laid out for two regularly visiting pheasants (which we love to see in the garden). He saw me but seemed unconcerned so I went to get the HW100K T. By the time I was in position from my usual spot he had disappeared again but it was only 30 seconds before he returned for more grain. After placing the crosshair on the rat with sui

The S410 is a great rifle and I took many rabbits when I had mine. It is well built, reliable and delivers pellet on pellet accuracy. Loved mine in .22.

Wow -- amazing shooting. Well done and welcome aboard!

Yes, he was a biggie, though not the largest I've shot in the garden. He thought he's survive in the dead of night, but clearly thought wrong! Yes, H&N FTT are great in HWs -- so too are JSB Select pellets.

For some reason I am still up at 0300 and so I checked the grain outside in the back garden and low and behold, a large rat was there. Nipped upstairs and grabbed the HW95 -- the 100K is now zeroed to 35 yards for rabbits, so back to the 95 for the closer range rats. I switched on the back door light and it seemed to not really faze the rat which scuttled out periodically for the grain from under the paving stone I use as a backstop. The third trip was its last with a .22 H&N FTT appropriately delivered.

Well I returned yesterday to the farm -- and steered clear of the field where the cows were just in case. Had a less productive trip but took this rabbit at one of the favourite spots at 20 yards, easy shot. He presented himself straight on at the third post down: and the spoils of the day: I returned to do some sniping in the adjacent field to the "Wild West" and took a young rabbit from my sniping position. I had been sitting there for 15 minutes when I heard some rustling behind me next to the barbed wire .... guess who it was: Perhaps they're my new fan club

I went back out last night with the FAC and a bunny appeared at 20 yards and turned front on to me ... the pellet went through the forehead and pretty much the rest of the body.

Yes, the HW100 is very hard to beat and it is the rifle I end up taking with me on most trips ... even where the FAC Rapid MK 2 is suitable to use. It feels just right to the shoulder, is quiet and built like a brick along with that typical German engineering. I won't be getting rid of mine ever. One question to fellow users .... do you fill when the needle hits the red or the yellow section ... I always fill at the yellow section.

It had been some time since I had visited the farm so it was high time to pay another visit. With the beautiful warm weather this afternoon was perfect. As I approached the farm along the country lane, rabbits were darting here, there and everywhere. There seemed to have been an explosion in the local population. Little did I know the afternoon would lead to some fireworks of a different kind. Today I went with my HW100K in .177. Normally I'm kitted out with the FAC Rapid but in practice you're quite limited with the shots you can take with the extra power. It's not a rimfire of course, bu
