a few rabbits on the lamp - nice to see young dogs
tia.kins replied to tia.kins's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
We drove that night, but like you when i am on foot i get them when the bag gets too heavy or when a natural break presents itself. The rabbits i catch are dog and ferret food, so if we are driving, then they all get cleaned out when the night ends. Do you gut them as you go when ferreting or save until the end? -

Tomo, We were pleased. I wasnt counting to be honest, but law of averages says 15 ish. She is nice and steady and should make a useful lamping dog and all round lurcher if she carries on as she is. Ferret-boy, lithium or standard cell, its all about the battery AmpHour....and how much you have the lamp on -
My mate from Derby came down to visit this weekend and we headed out to run some bunnies in Cornwall. It was a long old night but we were able the give the dogs plenty of rest in between runs, and they all had plenty of experience building runs. It was nice to see the various young dogs, and how they are shaping up with regards to how they go about catching their coney.....some were flat out up the chuff, others being that bit more reserved, taking their time and being sensible about stuff. All of the dogs ran well and left us with a nice haul to sort out whilst they took thier wel

The season starts soon, I'll be in touch.

Hey up jimmy, my little pup wont be getting involved in this sort of hunting this season. Maybe some ferreting. The dam of last nights young dogs is the black bitch in the middle. See you soon fella

Hey up TOMO, hope your well. It was nice to be out. Especially for Flyn. Feck me some if the fields he hunted in the grass was over his head. But then again, some fields were fast fields..... And as you have seen, Flyn isn't built for straight lining, just dirty snatch and grabs along the hedgelines..... Some one else asked about doubles and single. Because it was warm, we needed to rotate dogs a lot. So mainly single running, although Flyn ran with another on a couple of farms. I have no problem with that. There were two young lurchers, the outer dogs in the photo and these were on

Thanks for the replies. For those who like counting, my Flyn, (not pictured) had about 10 rabbits, we counted 60 at the end of night which just happened to be the final number we ended up with when we had run the dogs enough. So job done for me, flyns cobwebs blown away and, my freezer topped up nicely for the next few weeks. Cheers

I let Flyn have a dust off tonight and saw some young dogs running. Very nice too. Flyn settled into it like he had never been away, however, he has had a fat lazy summer and it was noticeable. Was bloody warm too so the dogs were rotated frequently.....and they ran well enough on the green rabbits. Young dogs Anyway, that's the freezer full for a while. Look forward to when they start cutting proper.

thanks for the replies......i am looking forward to her coming of age

worked for me. Check the size of the pictures on photobucket, you can select the upload size,...........some web sites dont like larger sizes..

I headed out nice and early today to go and do the Sunday routine......dogs, warm clothes, camera and big flask up on one of the Tors.... I really enjoy the peace and quiet and sense of being alone with the dogs. It was a bit misty, and a little sticky, but the higher you went, the fresher it got....and in no time i was enjoying an early morning caffine hit with the wind to my back, whilst the dogs knocked around the rocky outcrops that sometimes provide some sport. The ground was still covered in dew.....and the dogs seemed to be enjoying the scents....whilst i sipped away and took some sn

Yep, decent collie blood with the running dog attitude. Nothing more frustrating however than a Lurcher picking and choosing.....
-
Agree with that sentiment! Great title too

Just want a rabbiting dog?........ I happen to think that the humble Rabbit is one of the worst quarry for sickening a collie based Lurcher. Rabbit after rabbit...... Day after day......night after night.

I do the TOMO routine Fast..... Then slow.....long fast..... Some slow, bit of up hill, but no stand still. Start 2 miles behind the car, build up to 4 miles with the odd nights rest or Mabel a quick 2 miler..... See how the dogs fare. It's not lamp, or coursing or ferreting fitness- just a step change from mouching to get the muscles heart and lungs going. I will have them hold between 20-30 mph for about half mile periods.... Never really drop below 10 mph. Whilst in this routine( only ever at night with no cars/ cool air) I have the lamp out over the moors for the odd lucky r

Yeah....young Roxy tends to give flyn quite a hard time when playing. Funny to watch initially....then i feel for the old lad.

Great to see some updates on Willow. i missed these when first posted, but she does look well (and very content going by the last picture) Is she sooth coated or slightly broken? Little Roxy has signs of a beard....

Cheers for the replys. The young one is coming on nice.....and the ugly hair ball is enjoying the summer. I am lucky with the moors near me. Miles of open land, ad whilst most of it is barren, you can always find something to amuse the dogs. Some one asked on breeding...... They are not related, but both a mix if mainly collie grey...... and some other stuff chucked in for good measure

I took the camera out on an evening out on the moors and went an sat ontop of a tor for an hour whilst the dogs messed around..or stood posing for me Was nice and quite....and great weather and views. I got home two hours later than i had advertised to the wife I had said i would watch some crap on the telly with her (him and her bonding )......but to be honest i was in a far better place out in the fresh air Anyway, I filled the memory card....quicker than i thought i woudl too.. So there is a slide show of all the pics - click the text in blue The other images are s

Hiya Keith, yep, not far at all. I am out near Yelverton. Thats a nice looking youngster. Reminds me of an old bitch i had...........that was also a demon at 12 weeks!!

Had my sister visit this weekend with her young collie cross dog pup so got the camera out. Took some of my own little girl Roxy. She is 10 weeks now, Second Jab due tomorow then i will have her out a bit more so she can experience life on the moors For a little pup, she has settled in great and taken on board what i have asked her too....which isnt much at present, but she absorbs all the time....and is already threatening the local wildlife at trying to make use of the bird table! Anyhow, a couple of update Roxy pics, and some of Duke too. Duke.....

I can tell you now, from the dog I have here that you can take a pet bred lurcher, and have it doing more than enough to be a respectable dog. Yep, working stock probably betters your odds..... .....but let's stop kidding ourselves, most working stock- isn't in the purest sense!...... And really, catching stuff with a dog that is bigger, faster, stronger, trained...... Should be easy enough for most fit and well put together urchers to do. But a dog this way don't come out of the tin.....nor from an advert saying 18months old and ready for work. If your lurcher has a good dose of runni

congrats and enjoy. With the similar amount of collie, and age.....and pink nose!.... as my little terror - it will be interesting to see how they shape up as the months roll by. good luck and have fun

I am sure i remember reading them (certainly maddie) on Moochers web site - in much the same way there are articles on this web site - however, i think the site is down.

Well, Roxy has been here 2 weeks now and has certainly made her mark! Not just of the floor and house decor - but as part of the family, and i am pleased to say, finally with Flyn - the bugger has been a bit slow to adjust - but the last few days has seen him willing to roll over, submit and play Anyhow, Roxy is a very confident and bold young lady, happy to hurtle herself around and leaps like no other pup i have had..... :? Being such a small thing, she squeezes and fits in every where and picket fences and baby gates pose her no problem... ..infact, i know she is growing as the las
