An unsuccessful evening's rabbiting
Mr_Logic replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No, Master... -
For bigger mag, MTC and AGS do some high mag scopes that aren't horrendously expensive. Not up to a Bushnell Elite, but not as expensive either. Jamie - surprised on the bigger mag comments. I have a 7x50 Meopta on my Hornet and dropped a rabbit at 150 the other day no problems. 10 power would do me out to 250 for use on live quarry. Each to their own I guess, but it always surprises me how many ways there are to do the same job!

I'd go with a lamp on the gun, but I don't know how that works with a shotgun...

You are indeed required to notify, but you don't have to provide a receipt or anything like that.

3 or so bits, and they're pretty small, none anywhere near 100+ acres

.22 Hornet in Black Synthetic and *Light* ?

They do, the 77/22, but they don't do the synthetic stock in a Hornet. -
.22 Hornet in Black Synthetic and *Light* ?
Mr_Logic replied to a topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
You mean laminate or their synthetic for CZ? I am looking at a CZ 527 Varmint Laminate, but nobody has one round here, hence the question -
Out this evening controlling rabbits, I've recently got the nod to go onto the neighbour's land too, and the landowner said I was OK to go after foxes. Thought I'd have a quick butcher's with the Hornet and then get crack with the rimfire. First up, spotted foxy across the 300 yard field, squeaked him in nicely and then proceeded to fluff the 100 yard shot. Not a happy camper at all. I had a mooch about, found nothing more, went back to the car to get the rimfire. Just thought I'd whack the lamp on the field behind on the offchance (getting too late to give it a proper look) and saw de

.22 Hornet in Black Synthetic and *Light* ?

What Hornet have you got now? Sorry if I am being stupid. As for one with a black synthetic stock.. Hmm... CZ are making the American with a plastic stock now but I doubt if it's Hornet. Hornet is pretty rare now anyway, so I think the Browning is your only choice. If you find one, let me know where -
Cool - will try, many thanks for that.

Just put an MTC viper on my .223, no problems with the reticle for lamping. Rick. Cool Mine will be used for that before too long so it's good to know!

I have a 22 Hornet BSA Majestic, dating waay back. It shoots great except it has a problem... I load the magazine up as you would normally, and sometimes as you push the bolt forward, the front of the cartridge goes down instead of up into the chamber. Consequently it jams and needs clearing. Because it's not a detachable mag, I have to open the floorplate, remove the cartridges and reload. That's fine in daylight, but it's a real pain in mud, at night, under the lamp. One solution is to get a new rifle with detachable magazine (much easier to load, clear jams etc), but I would rather

Seconded, actually, the AGS was very clear, I had a look at the 8-32 when I bought my Meopta. Bought an MTC for my 22-250, everyone said it's better. Maybe it is, but not by a lot. Features are better though - mounts, sidewheel and IR included. Reticle might be a bit fine for lamping, but I guess I will see.

the rifle will be use for foxes out to 200 yards or maybe abit more. but only when im use to the rifle as i wouldnt shoot at ant live stuff at those ranges inless i was sure of a kill. as i wouldnt like to injure anything. 200 yards would be the most on one part of my shoot. as i have a big wood at the top most of the time the foxes come out and down the field. but sometimes sit just out in a safe area just outside the wood i no it would be a safe shot if i took it on as the bullet would go into the ground not in the wood. so that is 200 yards to where they are out of the wood at the top.

They're good scopes, can't go far wrong. I heard the Falcon Menace is meant to have better optics, but they only do it to 18 power in a 56 front end, so not sure if that helps, it's about £40 more. About illuminated though... I recently bought a Meopta 7x50, I spent a hundred quid more for IR, and I haven't used it once under the lamp. So for night shooting I wouldn't worry too much - Nikko only give IR scopes a one-year warranty which is a bit rubbish I think.

What are you trying to hit? 150 will be no appreciable drop. Using 55gr Prvi FMJ I had about an inch-ish (maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, was a while back) low at 200 yards, about 5-ish low at 288 yards. So on a fox you're looking at 250 yards, maybe a bit less. I would zero at 150, or zero high at 100.

ive done alittle poll on the bbs. but as there is a lot of guys on here that are not on there i would like to no what 22/250 you guys have I zero my .22.250 one and a half inches to two inches at one hundred yards that should be on target out to about 330yards thats good but do you have to aim under if something comes in close say 70 to yards ? yep.

Doesn't work like that, you have to declare which calibres you want and for what, so you need to know BEFORE you apply.
-
a man with many rifles this guy luck sod I will have... I have Hornet, 22LR and 22-250 right now. Ticket is in to remove the 22-250 and change to 243, plus add a 223 and change one of my LRs into a Sako Quad with 17HM2, 22LR, 22WMR barrels. But even when Plod gets his act together, I still need to find some money
-
You can't do it in one gun, as has been said. Depending on where you live and what deer you want to shoot, 223, 22-250 can do the job. In England, for some stupid reason, you still need 243 for roe deer. So, 22LR for rabbits. And then it's tricky. I have Hornet for long range bunnies and close-ish foxes. 22-250 or 223 for longer range foxing. 22-250 has the edge for range and power but 223 is cheaper to run, which is why I have gone for it, and then 243 for deer, and in my case also long range foxes.

both top rifles mate l havent had any sako rifles but from what ive heard and buy how many people i see that has them then im sure they are top rifles. saying that i no a couple of people that have the ssg and that is top rifle to god its a hard pick. there are bargains out there secondhand to be had as long as the rifles are looked after. and not beenshot out. thats the best thing about buying them off someone that just hunts with the instead of range work. the pics you sent be of your rifle look great and well looked after Definitely - I love that rifle. it cost me a thousand quid,

I vote for Sako
-
Exactly, they don't want people specifically using 22LR for the job. However, as I mentioned before, legally, foxes are classified as vermin, so if I shoot one on my Vermin ticket, I can't see how that would stand up in court, since the ticket never actually defines its version of vermin (because if it was defined as 'vermin except foxes' then obviously that changes things...).
