  1. I think you are somewhat missing the spirit of the response, and the point of my response. The advice is simple..Don't buy a 10-22 if you want a trouble free life or unless you intend to throw most of it away and buy a bucket load of spares, and spend more time cleaning it that shooting it!! Out of the box many of them will struggle to cycle subs! Am I wrong??? Chill out Richie.. you have already confirmed most of what I said in your original response! You're wrong I've had two now, the basic shitty one and the Target model. Both were 100% happy with subsonic ammo,
  2. Usually because they're dirty, lack of lube. When was it last fully stripped and cleaned? Does every component, including the spring, get cleaned with powder solvent?
  3. Well, it had gone way off to the left again. We got it sorted at Bisley at 200, then today at 100 it was 3 or so inches left, and a few high. I would expect the few high, but not to the left as well. So trying to bring it in, I got it pretty close and changed a couple of clicks, and then it was inches off again. I give up with the bloody thing, I will drop Gary/Sammy an email in the morning. In the meantime I have a PoS Richter Optik on there, zero it tomorrow and see how it goes. It's naff, but it worked on my Sako...
  4. Thinking about it... RWS might well take that ASE mod as well. Might be worth waiting to see which 243 you get, or are you pretty much decided on another Tikka? (since that obviously won't take that moderator )
  5. Weather permitting I will pop out later and give it another go... let you know...
  6. With an HMR? Rubbish! Head shot every time. HMR will happily hit the head out to 120 yards or more, and far, far more chance of a clean kill with it. At 55 yards, a head shot is easy-peasy (though Jamie, it's NOT easy when it's the first one and the adrenaline is going, I know full well!) and is my preferred method of dispatch. Jamie - nice shooting mate, well done - sure it will be the first of many. Aren't Steyr SSGs the heaviest rifle imaginable? I don't know the Winchester but even my old Sako would be too heavy for a field rifle really.
  7. They do the RWS with Stainless and plastic stock for about £550, ticks all the boxes... Remington SPS is about the same sort of money. I would get one of those, and see if you can back out of the sale of your ASE moderator - balance on an SPS was fine, when I tried it anyway. Not needing a new mod would save you a bit.
  8. Not wanting to be too hasty, I have the Viper on the 223 now, and the Nikko on the rimfire. I will re-zero and test. One thing though, while standing up waiting to be let into its cabinet, the 223 fell over and did take a knock, so be interesting to see where it shoots now - it got zeroed today at Bisley at 200 yards...
  9. Snap, that's very good shooting. I have also found the 58gr Vmax to be hideously accurate...
  10. Empathising, I would swallow my ideals and shoot a few. Make a big deal out of one or two and lay off the rest. The permission would be too important. Now, faced with the real me, I would shoot 'em and be done. Fundamentally, we shoot foxes for pest control, not for sport. If the farmer is losing lambs, then it's our job to deal with foxy, we don't have the liberty of morals.
  11. Don't have pictures at the mo but... .223 - Howa 1500 with thumbhole laminate stock and heavy stainless barrel, with MTC Viper 6-24x56, generally fed el cheapo Wolf ammo which is awful but the animals keep falling over and it's cheap .243 - RWS Titan 6 wood/stainless with Hawke Reflex 4-12x50 scope (yes it's rubbish but my god it works well!!), fed with 58gr Norma Vmax and 85gr Federal w/ Sierra Gamekings .22 Hornet - Brno CZ527 with Nikko Diamond 4-12x42, fed with whatever I can get my hands on .22 LR - CZ 452 Style with Nikko Nighteater 4-16x50, fed with el cheapo Magtech (un
  12. I read this as you saying that there won't be any difference in the two at the range, on an informal basis, and I disagree. I sent down 40 rounds in about 5-10 minutes earlier today, there is no way I could have done that with a sporter weight barrel.... But I do completely agree that carrying that rifle around isn't much fun. My point about the SPS tactical is that since it has only a 20" barrel, it's lighter than your normal heavy barrel fare, and thus it's better as an all round rifle. You are however 100% correct when you say that if it's mainly for deer then sporter weight is best.
  13. I have an MTC viper on my rimfire. it lost zero the other day so I ended up with a maimed rabbit. Not good, and have re-zeroed it. Thing is, I needed to apply a slight thump to lock its turret back down (really slight slap would be better actually...) and it shifted zero a half, 3/4 inch to the left at 50 yards. I know scopes will lose zero with an impact, but this was pretty light, certainly no more severe than it could in any one of a number of hunting situations. Is this normal?
  14. Snap, I disagree with you completely on this one. While I would like to use an 85gr bullet for minimal meat damage, and also because of its bone penetration, we PROVED that the 58gr vmax is an almost perfect killing bullet for a roe deer. In order to guarantee a humane kill, you want to expend as much energy into vital organs as is possible in the shortest possible amount of time. Almost any bullet will whiz through a roe deer without applying all its energy. This one didn't make it through the other side of the deer. Vitals were very quickly turned to mush, and as a consequence this deer
  15. Sorry but I don't go with this, you are making a judgement on one shot and hearsay! There is lots of different .243 ammo as their is with .308, and with respect, just because you had one deer that walked off 150 yards before its demise I hardly think it appropriate to immediately write off .243 for deer. Years back when I was shooting in Scotland with professional stalkers, we took the dogs out to track the wounded deer, I was told they had tracked one for over a mile before it dropped ...and they only EVER used .308!!! A .243 will only drop them on the spot with "minimal meat dam
  16. The heavy barrel rifles in this world are much better at the range, they heat up more slowly so you get in more practice and thus it's more fun! For stalking/field work, light is lovely.
  17. You can have as many firearms as you can show good reason for, so 2 more slots = no issue. Apply, get a CZ and a Sak, and enjoy!
  18. 308, only way to go for both of those roles. Remington SPS Tactical would do nicely..
  19. But, so does 22WMR... 17HM2 is supersonic so with correct moderation surely they are the same level of noise, roughly speaking?
  20. Being in the armed forces does not make you God's gift to humankind, so shut the f*** up about it. deerman and dog on, I give up with the pair of you. We will never agree, or like each other, so let's just leave it. It doesn't help the boards and it doesn't help anything else either.
  21. So then, if his brother in law is a large landowner and you know him, why don't you just shoot there where you have permission, and forget the poaching thing. Why make comments about how the landowners are wrong and bollocks to the system-type comments etc? It's not exactly helpful. And, no, you may not ask what I do for a living, it is none of your business.
  22. Everyone says that about the Remington's trigger, I quite like them as they are! If I got a Remington, the first thing I would do is lop 6 inches off the barrel, giving me a 20". Solves the balance issue. But... you don't have to - check out the Remington SPS Tactical. Comes in 308, shoots half MOA usually, 20" barrel. I've handled one in 223 and they're lovely. And... same sort of price as the SPS Varmint.
  23. I got involved in this thread because your comments incensed me (sorry, that means made me angry, I'm guessing by your spelling you don't have much of a grasp on English). You condone poaching which gives the whole community a bad name and is illegal. You talk about disobeying laws because you don't like them. You are nearly illiterate, judging by your posts on here. I have no idea what your beef with Deker may or may not be; I posted on this thread because I disagree very strongly with you, to the point where IMHO you should have no access to any kind of firearm, and you need to be ed
  24. yes it wont be fired as much as a range gun then so even if its a standard barrel it wont get hot quick like it would if used at range Yep Millions of choices in 308, it's one of those calibres, like 223, that everyone does a rifle, most companies do millions of variants as well. Nightmare choice.
