That's a heavy beast, take it you're from a high seat or something, or just feeling strong?!
-
Who have you found that said HMR is too much for rabbits? They're mad - it's a long range small vermin/game round - which basically means long range bunny gun!!
-
deker you say they have a load of your money .do you mind me asking what for ? they have a few bob of mine also ,where are you from local ? t3 Mine is at the Panbourne branch, a substantial deposit (as they like) for new gun and mod! I didn't know you ordered a rifle, which one? probably want to get that money back out ASAP!
-
Rabbits = vermin control, small rabbits eat grass too so, and burrow and cause problems, so they get shot along with all the rest.

I am just keen to make sure that the bullet doesn't just whiz through the fox without causing lethal damage. (obviously I'm aiming for the right bit, and most of the time I will hit it, but not always...) I will probably stick with the 85gr HPs then, although gotta be said I would like something cheaper!

combining pest control with a bit of stalking !

Good going -
I have a 243 which is down for fox and deer. It does both very well, but the trouble is that I need to use the 58gr Vmax for fox, because of expansion, and 85gr HP for deer, so that is doesn't expand so much. In order for the rifle to be truly multi-purpose, I need ammo that doesn't make a mess of a deer but makes enough of a mess on foxy. Anybody got any ideas if such a beast exists?

Out with the rimfire,and..........................
Mr_Logic replied to martin's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Expert shooting is a headshot :) Nice going though, odd when the bunnies do that, some days they scarper after one and others they just sit there. I had that once but still only got one, I had my old CZ 511, which was usually super-reliable, and chose that moment to jam. Yippee! -
It is daft what some people charge. Deker, if you're down in Devon soon and could be there for 4 days or so, the man in the Gunroom quoted me £75 for sorting out my 22-250. I should think it would be more to lop off your Tikka barrel a bit, but he's very reasonable. Failing that Turners are in fact worth asking as they are better than they were, and also Andy is worth an ask (though he wasn't as cheap as I hope when I mentioned it to him before). Regarding the 243, I'd get one that's been cut, it's far less hassle, and if we all do that then eventually they will all be cut becaus

I think as responsible conservationists, we owe it to nature to find a balance. Equilibrium is a good thing. So yes, shoot them at this time of year, but don't take the piss! If foxes aren't causing a problem for now, leave them. Whether they are a problem or not depends on the farmers. Ultimately that's why we're there - foxes don't cause us personally any grief (unless we're farmers ourselves obviously, or have chickens or whatever) so wait for the call. Some of my landowners are determined to exterminate so foxy is shoot on sight; others prefer them left as rabbits are the real problem

I'm not now, I have Hornet instead (although I am switching - a 223 and a 17HMR instead of the Hornet). I am bored of trying to find ammo and then paying a fortune. 223 is cheap, 17HMR equally so. Both have their uses and each does its job better than Hornet, which is a jack of all trades. Now, if someone would just get hold of the Hornady 35gr Vmax ammo, that would be different!
-
I like my rifles the way they are (except for the Hornet, I want a decent trigger, and the 223, I would want a better trigger ) But I wouldn't want camo...
-
Just looking at it... It's a 10/22 with a Hogue stock, aftermarket bolt handle and mag release, gotta be a trigger too, just a question of which one Also a different barrel - which one? And... what's the scope? More importantly, couple of decent size rabbits there, well done
-
tbh, the Wolf stuff is very cheap, but at the range it's fine for informal practice. It's also fine on foxy, and bunnies and muntjac. It's not perfect but it's cheaper than HMR, so can't really argue too much. The American Eagle will do me, I can't argue with around 3/4 inch groups really. The Trophy's not the best scope but I can't afford a better one yet, need to pay off the rifles But yes, in the fullness of time...!
-
I make sure all rifles are moderated, and if I am around one that isn't I have my muffs on. Fingers crossed...
-
So it's a 22 magnum then?
-
It's fixed I did everything everyone said, pretty much. Scrubbed the bore again yesterday and it was absolutely spotless. Put my Bushnell Trophy on there in place of cheap and nasty Richter thing, along with new mounts (had to, 1" as opposed to 30mm tube). Also sanded off some of the stock to give the barrel more room, I think it would touch under certain circumstances. Also got some more ammo to try - 55gr Barnaul and 50gr American Eagle hollow points. the 50gr HPs group to roughly .75" at 100 yards. The Wolf are also back to about 1.5" to 2" which, while not brilliant by any

John, do you know if he had a sound moderator? Reason being that I don't consider a moderated 223 to be that loud, for example. My 243 isn't too bad either. If I was spending all day with it, then I would wear muffs, but when out and about it just doesn't seem loud enough. That said, every now and then, when I am close to trees or whatever, there is enough noise that I do stop and think about it. I would imagine that without a moderator, you need muffs for almost every gun - I shot an unmoderated 22-250 for a while, and that was definitely loud enough that I needed muffs on if using it
-
martin, hmm... it is a floating barrel, and I noticed that it seemed to have shifted slightly to one side so it isn't floating all the time (there is some movement there). I will have a look at that one, thanks for the tip.
-
I would like to know what their centrefire moderators do in terms of the noise, that seems a very good price. Equally, other manufacturers' £300 seems like extortion, so perhaps they just charge a fair rate?
-
I think probably 17HMR and 223 are the way to go. What are your HMR prices now? I was shocked to find that it's £19/100 now...
-
Thanks guys. I don't think the rifle is inherently problematic, when I first got it these things shot OK. Since then the scope has changed, first to MTC then to the Richter thing. I have not been overly impressed with MTC so I will likely get a scope to go on it. Probably another Hawke Reflex. Cheap they may be, but my 243 holds zero and shoots well, so since I don't have spare cash right now that will do. I will also go round tomorrow buying up brands of 223 to test. Will likely try 40gr V-max and 50gr AMerican Eagle, and have some Barnaul already (more from hope than anything!)
-
Right then... My Howa in 223 has been causing me problems the past couple of days. I feed it el cheapo Wolf stuff. Before anyone says, "Well there's your problem" I was getting 1-2 inch groups with it at 100 yards, with the odd flyer. Given the price, I was happy enough with that, as an informal target and occasional fox/bunny/muntjac gun it's good enough. But... I changed the scope over from the Nikko to the MTC and then to a Richter Optik which I had lurking. The MTC has issues holding zero and with its turret adjustments, which is why I took it off. So, off out today with the Howa +
-
Not that I know a huge amount about wallabies, but I would think you would need 223 for them. Unless you just use the 308... Foxes - 223 is best out of those you mention. Rabbits - well, anything stops a rabbit... Targets - what sort of range? I would likely go with 22 Mag and 223, depending on availability of ammof for 22 Mag, and also if you can put a moderator on it.

Good shooting, I wish I could have borrowed you for some rabbit shooting tonight, 9 rounds fired, 9 very scared but unharmed rabbits -clearly no way you'd let that happen
