  1. Good going You mention the ricochet risk from the HMR - I've only ever heard that they break up easily. Certainly the other day a rabbit had a let-off because of a buttercup in the way, so I wouldn't be overly concerned with ricochets, just that something solid is my backstop and that nothing delicate nearby.
  2. Almost all of the factory rifles will do the job these days, it's personal preference. Remingtons shoot well, but Howas shoot just as well or better and cost less. Tikka is a nicer rifle than either but you pay more, so it depends on your preferences and your budget, but you can't get a new rifle that absolutely won't do the job, so check out a few in the gunshop and take it from there. Personally these days I would avoid Sako, but for a daft reason - they're lovely rifles. So lovely, could you bear it when your baby got scratched in the field?!
  3. I have a CZ and a Ruger 10/22. There is nothing whatever wrong with the 10/22, but for rabbits the CZ is more accurate and probably more reliable. Ruger 10/22s are reliable - you have to keep them clean. And by clean I mean you strip it every box and get all the crap out, put it back together and lubricate it all well - and then it'll cycle your next box without any grief at all. Would I be happy with one in the field? You bet.
  4. 243 is a great tool for that job. My RWS shoots sub inch (and tbh quite a bit better, but at a quid a bang I don't do too many targets with it!) quite happily and though I've only shot roe with it, I have no doubt that with sensible shot placement it will do bigger - clearly plenty of poke for roe. As for needing 243, well, legally in England/Wales, yes you do, but in terms of bullet required, well, 22 Hornet was a deer calibre and most of its factory ammo is still designed for deer use. While Joe Public might struggle (hence why it's not legal for deer any more) its original invention spe
  5. What are you planning on doing with it? There's never a 'best gun' without an intended purpose!
  6. It's a hinged floor plate, they all have that. It's very smooth, I was originally after detachable mag ideally, but the Howa is a lovely action, I can't fault it in the slightest.
  7. I have a Howa 1500 with the laminate thumbhole stock and heavy barrel. It's excellent. With 50gr American Eagle, it groups half inch at 100 yards. The magazine is very smooth and easy to use, and it's a well-made, quality piece of kit. It weighs too much for me in the field, but that's not a major issue as it was bought for the range and my other half in any case. Strongly recommended. But, I will likely buy a Tikka T3 when I get a second 223 (lightweight, for rabbits, foxes, deer and canada geese) as I am not a big fan of the looks of the lighter barrel/Hogue stock version. Silly I kn
  8. 223 is a terrific all-purpose calibre. I am a big fan of a rifle that can do more than one job, 223 ticks rabbits, foxes, small deer and other similarly-sized creatures. If roe or larger are reguarly on the menu, 243 might potentially be a better choice. I have just put in for a 223 lightweight rifle, my heavy Howa has been great but it will be used on the range where it belongs, and a lighter beast will do everything else. There is a valid case for 17HMR and 223, as the 17HMR is still a lot quieter than 223 and mostly cheaper to run, too. That leaves the 223 for foxes and small de
  9. Hi folks, informational post! I emailed Ruag to ask the twist rates on RWS Titan rifles, and got a very helpful list back. Save people from bothering Ruag for this later, here they are, should anyone need them: .243 Win. = 10 inch 6,5x55 = 8,661 6,5x57 = 7,874 6,5x65 = 7,874 7x64 = 8,661 .270 Win. = 10 .308 Win. = 12,008 .30-06 = 10 .25-06 = 10 8x57 IS = 9,488 8x68S = 11,024 7mm Rem. Mag. = 9,488 9,3x62 = 14,173 .300 Win. Mag. = 10 .300 WSM = 10 .270 WSM = 10 .222 Rem. = 14 .223 Rem. = 12,008 5,6x50 M
  10. I haven't got round to trying Eley in my 452 Style yet. I have shot Winchesters and the Magtech cheapo stuff, and the Magtech for me. It's cheap and accurate, and unlike Eley subs, it hits hard. I find that there is little expansion with the Eley subs - you might as well use solid stuff. The Magtechs, like the Winchester, have a big hollow point and the expansion works - I have had a 2-inch exit hole through a fox, so can't complain!
  11. hi logic this is the unit i use. its the hypergen version. cost £2250 & worth every penny. http://www.nvscopes.com/night%20vision%20s...0HTH%20731.html rich Lotta money, but does look good
  12. I knew about the older uses, not the WW2 side - when was that?
  13. I have a Wildcat Predator 8 for my .223. I don't feel that it moderates perhaps as well as it should so I did a bit of digging. AFAIK, there are two versions - .25 and .30. I should have the .25 but I think I have the .30, which would explain the limited moderation. Could someone with one on a 223 that works really well measure the front hole please? My ASE has a 1/4" hole up front, my Wildcat is 3/8", which seems odd. Many thanks
  14. Yes, if you happen to put a shot very close in the right place, but you can't really say that a 12 ft/lb air rifle, and similar ilk, were ever conceived as a weapon - they have always been for small vermin and targets without any connotation as a human-human weapon. My point was that with an airgun, it's very hard to kill someone. From .22LR and upward, that is not the case, hence the differentiation.
  15. Good going lads Cracking bit of land that looks like, too. And you've answered my 243 ammo question Although with 58gr Vmax they never run (or even stroll off casually!!), the 100gr is cheaper and better on the deer so I shall be trying some ASAP.
  16. Hi Basil Well you did the right thing in having your friend take you out and about to hopefully teach you safety and fieldcraft but he should have known he could not let you as a non FAC holder use the .243 or for that matter the .22. In some areas in the UK your friend could have been in deep do do. Pity you had not asked this forum before spilling all to your FAO - anyway damage limitation! Good luck with your FAC. Peter Peter, you are wrong. You are perfectly permitted to let non-FAC holders use your rifles under supervision as SportingShooter says. I checked this wit
  17. I happen to like things like the GSG MP5 lookalike, they're pretty cool. I wouldn't use them anywhere other than the range though, or perhaps 'zeroing' on a tin can in a field. Bit of fun and nothing more. IMHO they don't do any harm so leave them. But then I think the same about fox hunting, as I rate freedom below the life of vermin, but look what happened there. Hey ho...
  18. It's an emotive word, weapon. Personally I think weapon or firearm is fair. Let's be honest here, a lot people take a weapon and use it as a hunting rifle. When I say weapon, I do of course mean a tactical/sniper rifle, many of which make excellent varmint guns, or indeed the other way round. Fundamentally, firearms were originally conceived as weapons, but their uses became known. Any firearm (OK, perhaps not FAC air!) can be used as a lethal weapon, but the difference is that the shooting community, highly-publicised exceptions notwithstanding, doesn't do this. Therefore, to call a f

  20. I know they do exist, in fact I'm sure 5/8 is pretty common on heavy barrel rifles, but I'm the only person I know with a 223 heavy barrel rifle so no opportunity to test
  21. Using your mate's .22 probably counts more than anything, it's field experience! Keep doing that and make sure your FEO knows when he comes out to say Hi
  22. Hmm!!! Well, I've given up on that slant, going with HMR. That said, I would still like my 223 to be a bit quieter, interesting to try other moderators but since it's 5/8" threaded I think I will leave it as is!
  23. First off, I respect your judgement of most things MR L, I just have a few things to clear up. It is tricky to hold an FAC when under 17, when I say hold I mean to use, in that getting your firearms and ammunition is tricky and time consuming. As you say your father obtained his FAC to help you out, AJWH doesnt have that to rely on. AJWH does not state whether he has experience other than that with a shotgun, therefore I have to assume he has no experience with a rifle. Whether you agree with mentoring or not, it happens, depending on what police force your in. I dont have it on the
