  1. 1000 rounds for an HMR, bollocks!! They are relatively low velocity, low pressure rounds. SHould last a fairly long time, certainly a lot longer than that. Has the rifle in question been cleaned properly, ie de-coppered? Copper fouling will cause a loss of accuracy. The moderator is another good place to check. I had a Sak on my old CZ, when I sold the rifle the mod went in the bin - it was heavily worn and didn't like the extra heat/pressure compared with 22LR. It had had <1000 rounds so I would advise a better moderator personally.
  2. Mine sits on my belt or in a pocket. Never gets in the way, worth its weight in gold.
  3. Well, I decided on a 223, got the SPS tactical. Here it is ... Seems to shoot the crappy Wolf around an inch, but having trouble getting it zeroed with the Nikko on there. Time to invest in a new scope methinks. The Leupold rings are 30mm though, so my scope choices shrink somewhat... 2 rabbits with it thus far, doubtless more to come. Weight is fine though perhaps a bit heavier than I'd have liked in an ideal world.
  4. But... I wasn't really making a point ...
  5. I found the Simmons on Fleabay for £120, but I also found a Leupold VX-II for £220. I've put my MTC on there for now, and it seems to be doing the job thus far. Since I am getting a new rifle I will hold fire for now and wait and see...
  6. The main issue is charging for it. If you know your doctor reasonably well (or even vaguely!) then I guess it's OK. I don't even know my doctor's name, so for me to ask them would be a bit daft
  7. One thing that confuses me. The amendment to the law, for day shooting out of season, says about protecting the heritage and/or public safety but makes no mention of damage to property. The bit on night shooting makes reference to the damage to property bit. Which leads me to wonder if you can shoot deer out of season during the day if they damage your property BUT at night you need a license to do the same thing. But that's daft, because it means (if correct) that I could in theory shoot a roe doe on my landowner's land (assuming they wanted me to, obviously) at any time of ye
  8. Landowner will be fine, they simply have to be of good character and to have known you personally for 2+ years. Regarding doctors, they AREN'T fine unless they know you anyway, because they don't know you personally AND many charge. The form specifically states the reference must not be paid-for.
  9. I think you guys need to calm down! FJ - Deker AFAIK is saying that while the football pitch method is used, it's not precise because of potential variances in pitch size. This is a valid point but most of the time the variance is slight. Possibly slightly pedantic, BUT. Not liking the method doesn't make anyone less experienced in the field - other methods can be used, and indeed are used. Also, over here anything over 300 yards is a long way and most permissions don't have shots that far to be taken, or if they do they are certainly not common place. Deker - FJ I think is just
  10. Possibly pedantic and probably pointless arguments about the size of a football pitch aside, Deker can shoot, and he can shoot in the rough too. And his range estimation is pretty close too. Not saying how he learnt it though, keeping out of this one! But all I know is he often guesses and my rangefinder agrees, so ...
  11. simmons whitetail 6.5x20x50 for 100 pound brand new mate Where...? I will place an order
  12. I was out yesterday with the HMR, it currently has a Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 on it. I was finding that the 12 power was a bit limiting for head shots out past 120 yards, and that it wasn't overly bright, either. So, recommendations for a sub-£200 16+ power scope welcome Things currently under consideration: AGS - VIPIR and SWAT. Know the SWAT a bit, in that I had a look at and was impressed by the 8-32. Don't know the VIPIR at all. Like the price, but are they any good? Falcon Optics - Very tempted indeed, but if possible i wanna go cheap as chips because I need to buy a 223
  13. Urban foxes are frequently not healthy, but the practice of dropping them in the countryside is common. I've heard tales from Devon of the RSPCA dropping off foxes on Dartmoor from the towns, they all go to the farmers' bins, of course the farmers then use a shotgun or get one of us lot to deal with them, so it's quicker just to kill them in the towns!!
  14. No I've not seen them, I have a Bushnell Yardage pro, and it's OK. Weak past about 200 or so, needs a tree or a hedge, and doesn't range a deer much beyond about 250. But, it's good enough for me to work out the ranging from the landmarks that it CAN use, so it does its job. If I could buy a Swarovski then I would, but they're silly money :(S
  15. I would think if the landowner has the permission you'd be OK. But, I would want to see it before I starting knocking over bambi under a lamp though. But I can't find anything anywhere that says you need a bigger gun for night work, and tbh that's a load of crap from a simple view of getting the job done. I can shoot just as accurately at night as I can in the day. If I find myself in a position where I can't see very well, I don't take the shot. Simple as...
  16. I also queried BASC on this, they said to ME that you can let over-17s use your rifles so long as you are with them, you need to have permission to shoot there (d'oh!) but that's it.
  17. I have been tasked with looking into this for our club, so I am very interested in this thread
  18. My Howa loves American Eagle 50gr hollow points, it's < 1/2" with them sometimes, hovers around the .5" inch mark, up to .75" normally. They're pretty cheap, but Wolf are much cheaper. It sticks them into about an inch and a half, which at 18p a pop isn't too bad.
  19. It's pedantic I will forgive you coz you're from the land of Oz and they talk funny down there Range finding ultimately is personal preference. Pacing and range finding are the most precise methods, but often that level of precision is not required.
  20. basil...you have to open your mind to the MAJOR difference between VERMIN CONTROL (As defined by man) and licenced in these circumstances: and sport. These are 2 very different things and must not be confused....nobody wants to cause deliberate suffering to any animal but if control is required then the young go as well; as humanely as possible!! I still don`t agree with it. Someone didn`t do their planning very well. If the deer numbers were out of control, why plant a load of saplings which surely he must of known would attract the deer. The deer have only become a pest because of
  21. I think we might be confusing rifles here Jamie, the Savage is touted as 6.25 lbs...
  22. Mil-dot or some other reticle very important, beyond that crack on! The MTC range has a great reticle but overall I'm not a fan. Have a look at Falcon Optics (www.falconoptics.com) as they have a reticle that ought to do a similar job. I'd get their 10x42 for a rimfire (and indeed, if I could justify the expense with the expected new rifle outlay, I would buy one myself).
  23. I am looking for light weight but also (and primarily) good balance. Hence why I am thinking the SPS tactical might well be OK. I was out with my Howa the other day, and the problem is heavy moderator sat on heavy barrel, meaning that the balance is awful on a heavy rifle. If the balance was back toward me the weight would be bearable, although the sheer size of the rifle gets in the way too. The SPS tactical is more compact, though heavy-barreled, and I should think balance will be OK. FJager - Tikkas are Finnish But I hear what you're saying. Sadly Sako is £1200 and way too expensi
  24. OK, please justify the Tikka bit, as from what I can see they both have el-cheapo plastic stocks. They both tout a full floating barrel, but you have to be careful to make sure you don't put too much pressure on the fore-end. The Tikka is a single-length action with a stop pin, the Savage is billed as a short action. The Savage is a bedded stock, AFAIK the Tikka isn't. I'm not trying to be pernickety but you're not the first person to say that the Tikka is much more gun, but on paper the Savage is its equal so I am really curious to know why the Tikka is the better rifle. I agree t
