  1. My problem with the MTC is at the longer ranges when its reticle gets lost in the murk. The reticle is OK for a 22LR if you have a decent lamp. Mine is the 6-24 which is too big physically for most rifles. I rarely get a clear sight picture with it, which is why it's now off all my rifles. Personally I don't find MTC's glass to be as good as they say it should be - it is after all Chinese, not Japanese... For a hundred and fifty quid, Bushnell's Trophy is worth a look, as is a lower-mag Nikko Diamond. Ignore the Nighteater, I have one and it's crap. Like the MTC, it isn't on a rif
  2. What lamp are you using? I've found that at night, optical quality is less important than at dusk, and most of all, illuminated reticles ain't worth sheeeit, unless it's a fine crosshair and the range (and thus lamplight) is extreme.
  3. Buy cheap, buy twice. Mainstream rifles like CZ and Remington are available for £450-£550 if you look in the right place, and they're new. THat's the route I would go down UNLESS you find a rifle that's clearly in good nick and you know it's been looked after. If you can shoot it first, great - if it shoots well and works, you know you're doing OK
  4. when you say sensible ranges, how far do you mean?
  5. Recommendations for a 223 ... Well, most people make a good one! I have currently - Remington SPS Tactical CZ527 Synthetic Both 223, both shoot well. Remington for range work, CZ for field work. CZ was cheap but prices are going up Howas are good, Tikkas are good (watch the balance with a moderator though). Any of those 4 will be OK. Steyr are OK but expensive, Browning are very good but very rare. RWS very good, but again pretty rare at the moment. Easiest thing, go to your local gunshop and have a look. Since they're all pretty good, anything will do. Choic
  6. Nah, Hornet is a theoretical calibre unless you reload. if you reload, it's cheap and works well. If not, you can't get ammo and what little you do find is very expensive and often crap. 223 is a much more versatile calibre because the ammo is readily available and has variety.
  7. MTC is OK for 22LR, further out I find the reticle too cluttered. Deker has JSR scopes and all are <£100 Very good optics in them for the price. Or MTC's Cobra is meant to be good, but I've never clapped eyes on one so I recommend the JSR line. Don't get a cheap Nikko IMHO, mine is awful. Or there's Hawke, which are hit and miss, mine was a reasonable one. In terms of mag, 10x is fine for bunnies to 120 yards, so a 3.5-10 or something should be fine.
  8. I like Uttings, key to getting it right is good search facility though.
  9. In your situation I'd get .22 WMR. You get 125 yards on foxy no problems, 150 if you can hit him right. HMR is great for rabbits but much over 100 yards has relatively little energy, and because the bullet is light there is just no wound damage. 22 Mag is better. However, if you can reload, then get 223 and be done. 35p is fine for a bunny rabbit IMHO, and the poke is there for foxes (and indeed the smaller deer). You can get factory stuff (American Eagle) for 50-odd pence each, if you can find them.
  10. Was gonna say, I reckon that one with the sunflower was late home
  11. I have the 6-24x56 Viper and I really don't like it. The reticle is good for 22LR, but at night I have to be absolutely in line to see through it, and it's a real pain. The reticle is IMHO too fine for lamping as well. 22LR is a tricky one because of the drop, but I'd just get mil-dot since it does the job but is relatively uncluttered. On my flatter shooting rifles I'm going back to simple-to-use reticles that don't get in the way. I prefer the German #4 with a dot, but standard duplex should be OK too. The dot reticle is brilliant - I was busting up rabbits at 200 yards with my Rem
  12. I use what I can get mainly! prvi shoots well in the 243 and I can get softpoint so I use that. 223, American Eagle shoots well in both the Remington and my new CZ 527 223, but nobody seems to have it in a sensible volume. I'd take Prvi's 55gr softpoints but nobody has them HMR, Winchester but I'll shoot what I can get 22LR Eley subs
  13. cool mate better to be save then sorry i guess. i really want a open ticket its so much more easy plus if your fairarms department are very and behind like mine is most of the time it can take a age for them to go check some land. im getting rid of my 22lr and using the money for better scope for the 22/250 so i will only have hmr and 22/250 then. i guess i will ask to see if my ticket can be open at the end of this year or next. and ask my friend i go with to write a letter for me to help back me up on it If you get rid of the 22LR, make sure you keep a slot for one, as you'll s
  14. My soon-to-be-departed Howa loves the American Eagle 50gr HP
  15. FEOs generally do dish out their mobile number if you ask, I have mine. He hardly ever answers it, but that's another story!! As far as notification & permission goes it depends on your FAC. As I understand it, if your ticket doesn't specify the land but says it needs to be approved by the Chief Officer of Police, then technically you can shoot on any land you know to be cleared. HOWEVER, correct legal clarification demands you call the Firearms Dept (FEO is normally quicker) to check approval. This ensures that you have complied and are not going on hearsay. If your land is speci
  16. I zero HMR at 100 yards normally. Drop at 200 give or take is 1 mildot, so 7.6 inches. Probably more than that, but that's what I allow and it tends to hit stuff...
  17. It certainly was very impressive! I do expect it to bed down though, my RWS did, it's absolutely fine now but when I first fired Prvi I thought I would need a wrench to close the bolt!
  18. I had a similar hole from a 90gr PSP Prvi the other night - no arguing with them. Although, unfortunately my first shot was a bit low so it only nicked him Second one made a bloody great hole like yours did... Good going just the same though. I was out tonight after the deer and only one buck turned up. I had a standing shot present itself but I wasn't happy to hit him clean so I left alone.
  19. With a closed ticket, you may only shoot on bits of land about which you notify the police. Therefore, if you didn't notify, you couldn't shoot on any piece of land with friends. BUT this process can be as quick as a call to your FEO, so if you have an efficient one you should be OK. If you call them regularly they will likely open your ticket anyway. The very daft thing is that you may shoot with your friends on their permissions using their firearms, but you can't use your own, even if theirs are more powerful than yours. Gotta love GB firearms laws
  20. HMR every time. The rabbits don't really mind the crack of the round, it's much harder hitting so I know when rabbit gets hit, he's down. Not every single time, but a lot more than 22LR. Also you have much better drop and windage figures with HMR so it's easier in the majority of rabbiting situations. 22LR has a place, with moderated subsonic, but it's not the ultimate bunny gun for me.
  21. Yep, 40gr is no problem at all at 250 on a fox, and that's from 223. 22-250 shoots it even faster so it will be fine. I spent the weekend knocking over (should that be taking apart?) bunnies with it..
  22. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think it takes a lot of skill to train a dog and then work that dog right to hunt a fox. I couldn't do it, I don't have the skill. However, you dog folks need to respect us rifle people too - if you think it's easy to knock over a fox at 300 yards, especially at night, well, you come out and do it then - it's really not.
  23. HMR will take Charlie at whatever distance you can hit him in the brain. Note, brain, not head. They're pretty weedy really, so headshots are a must beyond about 100 yards. 200 is pushing things except in a dead calm conditions with a stable shooting platform and a reliable setup.
  24. Too general a question! Remington make lots and lots of 308 model 700s! At best you'll get a good guideline, but all guns are too different...
