I've been around the block a couple of times but it doesn't matter how many corners you turn...something new/different always turns up, you just never stop learning! BUT..I know little about Wildfowling...just waiting for someone to offer me the chance of letting go with a cannon...(punt gun). Have a word with Andy, he's got a 3-inch cannon IIRC As for a stalking rifle, for just deer, 308. It is common, cheap and reliable. Will knock down any deer you care to mention.

I absolutely don't understand why you are getting a 22-250 for use on bunny rabbits. If you're going to reload, get 22 Hornet and a 35gr tip. It will fly flat to 200 yards, knock over any rabbit you like , as well as foxes to boot. Why on earth do you get a 22-250 for bunnies, and more importantly why on earth are they granting it? Anywhere else I know you'd get told to shove off... Please explain, sorry if this sounds combative, I just don't get it at all.

I will pay to see that

Then again, it may have been further And I did range from the fence, not the fox

Yep..you could be right but digital pics are easy these days... 500 should not be a problem..as long as it is correct and been looked after...Sako are pretty good so fingers crossed! Difficult this one; but I am going off the 22-250, now don't get me wrong.... it is a great calibre and flat, fast, hits pretty hard ...but it is a little heavy on barrels...I have not heard of anyone saying it is great for anything but fox...and still debateable on that..and the ammo if ******* expensive and not that readily available! So it starts to be a bit specialist..but if that is the speciality yo

I don't think IR is all it's cracked up to be personally, some like some don't, I'd definitely try it, but perhaps on someone else's scope first...

Out with Deker once more last night one of his larger bits of land... Not long after we started lamping, Deker spied a fox over a small brow of a hill, we headed toward it. It ran left but we didn't see it initially, picked it up again PDQ and it was running away. I'd decided it was time Deker had one so I left the fox for him, I heard him say that why wouldn't it stop, and I then saw it stop. So I shot it.... Oops! About 150 odd yards (bit under I suspect, maybe 120-odd?) and a body shot in the right place, 40gr 223 works again. I unloaded the rifle at this point to prevent me getting

Certainly right on the practice front!

S&B, Swarovski or Zeiss, you can't go wrong. Personally I'd get the S & B 8x56 and I'd get Hungarian. Fantastic scope at a sensible (well, for the optics!) price.

Rob, 223 = crap, I don't think so. 204 Ruger is flatter than the 223 for sure, and it's less wind affected to boot. Which makes it a good varmint round. But, you still don't find it everywhere, and you do 223. 40gr 223 ammunition is very flat too, not as good as the 204 but not bad at all. In terms of aiming off, mildot reticle - that's what they're there for. And also, how many foxes do you shoot on the lamp at ranges > 250 yards? I nailed a 244 yard fox this evening, my longest, and it's pretty rare that they're over 200 yards. I've had 2 over that range, tonight and a 230 yard on

I use a Lightforce 170, and I do get some reflection. I have found that some scopes suffer more than others on the same setup - I had an MTC on my Remington for a bit, that was unusably awful at night, stuck my Hawke on it and it was perfect - I could see clear as anything. The neoprene helps a bit, but basically I need a new scope. Trip to USA soon The moderator is Country Pursuits' own. I am happy with the weight and the size, but the moderation is crap. It's bearable, that's about all that can be said. He wants £200 for the moderator, I paid considerably less. Had I paid £200 I would

fox shooting nite 2 with ss on the trigger
Mr_Logic replied to sounder's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Good going, that top fox was opened up a bit. Quick lunchtime read, and that's very icky! Are there any foxes left over there now? That's like about half my annual tally in 2 trips!! -
Might be dirty, that would be my first thought If it's just 'not quite as good', then is it good enough?
-
If you're lucky and have a gun that likes it, it's decent enough for practice. If you're not lucky (likely) then it's crap ammo and goes all over the bloody place. It really is luck of the draw though, Deker's T3 shoots v-bulls all afternoon at 200 yards with it, my Remington, and the Howa before it, are lucky to put 5 on a piece of A4 at 100 yards.

Out with Deker initially on one of my permissions tonight, thinking of muntjac if we could find them, and foxes and rabbits. Although Deker spotted a muntie to start with, couldn't find it to shoot sadly. So we wandered off after anything we could find. After a short walk we were going across a field, Deker spots something moving on the far hedge, still daylight at this point. I had a quick look through the scope, it was a fox. Fair old way out, too far for Deker's HMR, so while it was definitely his turn, my 223 was needed. Bang, smack, down he goes. Ranged to 200 yards (207 I thi

Yes, Bisley was very good My 3 shots were the only 3 I fired today. My missus put 45 through the Remington, including a remarkable string of V-bulls and bulls, I was at the butts with Deker's lad at this point, commenting on someone shooting very well. Very happy for her but the gun is filthy, and I still get to clean it! Skeet is good fun, my first go today. Hit a few but not great by any means, more to come I'm sure!! Deker - how come you're cleaning 2 semis? Surely you should only be cleaning the one?!
-
If you're reloading then anything will do I'd take a 22 calibre over a 20 unless you fancy a challenge, more choice of bullet heads from what I can see (don't reload so no expert) 22-250 is very good if you reload, but tbh I still think the 243 is a better choice. 223 all the way for me - 1200 ft lbs of poke, 40gr bullet at 3700 fps. 22-250 is faster and more potent but also has more powder load, and is louder. 222 is roughly 1000 ft lbs so a bit lighter than 223, not worth bothering with because ballistically not different enough from 223 and a bit less effective. 204 Ruge

Yes I thought as much. I won't have time to go over there for this week so I thought sod it for a fiver, but if they shoot well I won't be buying any more from EJ Churchill! I bought a box of 243 ammo at the same time, they were £1.25 cheaper!!
-
How do you mean?
-
Good luck with it mate, I definitely think you should push for apology/compensation, that was bloody dangerous!
-
Then you want an SPS Tactical. It's cheap, 1:9 twist so it shoots pretty much anything you like. It has a 20" barrel so good from a vehicle. I have one and it's superb. My only trouble is that it's too heavy for carrying so it busts targets at Bisley now. Can't recommend highly enough. If you're feeling rich you can get the LTR, same action/barrel but in a better stock.

Foxing with Lamp and Rifle.........

Good going -
are you carrying it around? What are you shooting with it? Massive variety of Remington 700s so need to know those and then I think we can help

I just paid £18.25 for 50 CCI 20gr HMR bullets. That's a mental price IMHO, but no time to head anywhere else for them, and since it was only one box I wanted... Anyone else paid that much for HMR?

It's funny you should say that... I already have plans for the loo roll! My Bushnell Trophy has far too much reflection on the ocular lens so I was going to do a home-made extension. Loo roll looks like it should be the right size
