  1. The joys of Wikipedia If the figures below are right, then it's deer legal throughout the UK. 123 gr (8.0 g) Sierra Matchking 2,650 ft/s (810 m/s) 1,917 ft·lbf (2,599 J) AFAIK it's a wildcat so you'll be reloading. Or you could just shoot .243 and be done, similar figures. Let's NOT have the whole debate again though!
  2. Those 58gr are superb, remember when I used them in my 243. very destructive!! Good going all
  3. Used to use a neoprene one but it came with the mod, which I bought second hand. Now cut to size on my T8-AR.
  4. For daylight target shooting, forget MTC. Falcon Optics do the Menace in various magnifications which is better since the adjustments are more reliable, my MTC hasn't been perfect, my Falcon has. Optically they are similar too. 10x should be enough at that range, so the Menace 10x42 will do you. Failing that Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 is a good scope too.
  5. The venison was good, pretty much the same as roe though. SS, no don't think you broke that scope, works really well!
  6. Out tonight, zeroing my Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x50 which I just got from Deker (remember that one John? He didn't like the ret so I had it instead!). Got it zeroed for 50 yards (I was being lazy) and headed out. Lovely click adjustments, took hardly any time and was very impressed. Given the Butler Creeks and optics, I can see very clearly indeed. Not quite S&B, but very close. Before I saw any rabbits, came across a fox trotting across the field. He saw me and trundled off out of HMR range, and then disappeared. I could see him clearly until the hedgeline, and he'd gone Somewhat mi
  7. Go ask your local farmers, but be prepared for lots of rejection before someone takes a punt. As with the first job, more land is easier when you've already got some!
  8. Depends what you want to do. The CZ's going to group better but either's going to do the job on bunny rabbits. Ruger is now cheaper, and I personally prefer a semi auto where I can. But it's personal preference.
  9. You gotta reload it, it's a wildcat calibre. .17 Ackley Hornet if you're going there, I don't know too much about it, but I've never seen a bad word said about it.
  10. mr logic still trying to peddle obsolete rounds......probably slightly better than a 22 semi auto.. your worse than my grandad reminising about the good old days.....time to move on......hornet will never be back in vouge, the round is lacking in many ways..... Sorry Woz, But the hornet round is far from obsolete, myself and my mate both use this calibre regularly, and so far this season have accounted for 20+ foxes, factory ammunition is readily available around my area, but most benifit by reloading a combination of 13gns hodgdons lil-gun powder, 40gn hornaday v max head gives muzz
  11. Thermal underwear. It's the very finest ever. Long johns for me, although I need some more because the cat shat in my underwear drawer when I was away After that some of the warm trousers are good, and then lots of layers. Extremities are the most important thing though, good gloves, warm hat, thick socks. I also want to get some Muck Boots as my wellies get cold and horrible pretty quick. Has to be said though I run pretty warm, most of my colleagues either complained or gave up on the lunch run, and I was warm and toasty in a T-shirt with a coat on...
  12. OK, so you will need something to help estimate drop. Under £300, secondhand is good. Bushnell 4200 might be OK, want the mildot ret though. Or MTC, worth a look if you like the ret. Works well but not great under the lamp, EXCEPT on rimfires when the range is short. Or a Falcon Menace 7.5x50, which is mildot with good adjustments and pretty good glass.
  13. I ordered 200 50gr American Eagles about 2 weeks ago, got a call on Thursday to go get them. I couldn't, sadly, because the M40 was dead. And now my car is dead, so I still can't
  14. The bases in question are 20 MOA adjustable ones, you can dial them in from 0-20 MOA, as extra sight adjustment so it should be fine at close or longer ranges. Not sure on them for Tikkas though. Wherever possible, I would use Weaver bases since the T3 is drilled & tapped for them. Then you can make use of any number of quick-release Weaver rings. NB, Weaver advice is a general bit, the Zeiss scope clearly needs the 20MOA bases.
  15. Yes, HMR works on foxes, but no, I wouldn't recommend it. Put it in the right place and down they go, but there is zero margin for error. I really dislike HMR for anything other than rabbits, I just find the tiny little bullets don't have great penetration and over about 100 yards don't have much shock power either. I just wish 22 Hornet would be back in vogue, it's a terrific general purpose round but let down by the crap factory ammo (which hardly any RFDs stock)
  16. Fingers crossed this all blows over without the loss of that permission, it's a terrific one too. The farmer that owns it is a sound and reasonable chap, so here's hoping once he's calmed down he sees all the reason here. Now if it was this other guy, he needs to be very firmly dealt with. These cows are mostly f***ing huge, somewhere around or over the tonne mark I should think. You simply cannot confuse it with something else, so I wouldn't rule out a deliberate act, which is a whole different can of worms. I can see the farmer saying that shooting can continue but in daylight only,
  17. Ruger 10/22! it's cheaper than any CZ now, and it shoots straight enough for bunny rabbits. Don't worry about modding it, the only thing you do need is the trigger kit which is cheap. Overall bill still well under a new CZ. if you care for them they don't jam either, except the odd one. Very useful bit of kit. But, since there are so many out there, try a few at the club and see what you prefer.
  18. Seconded. Great reply ML. Thanks guys
  19. You keep saying about the Home Office, please post a link. 6.5 doesn't fire the same weight of bullet as 243, so it's a meaningless comparison. Remington's wonderful ballistics section says: Velocity (ft/sec) Cartridge Type Bullet Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500 Remington® Express® 100 PSP CL 2960 2697 2449 2215 1993 1786 Remington® Express® 140 PSP CL 2550 2353 2164 1984 1814 1654 Energy (ft-lbs) Cartridge Type Bullet Muzzle 100 200 300 400 500 Remington® Express® 100 PSP CL 1945 1615 1332 1089 882 708 Remington® Express® 14
  20. 1. No. 2. No, not legally anyway, AFAIK (not 100% on shotgun law, ask me a rifle question!! )
  21. I think i've confused the issue What i mean was that in the vast majority of stalks any sort or aim adjustment or holdover does not even come into play because the range is less than 175 yards and you're shot is either +/- an inch or so. I thought the terminal peformance of the two calibers was being called into question as opposed to the accuracy Practise and accuracy go hand in hand and are, of course, very important. I can shoot MOA off a bipod prone on a range at 100 yards but not standing off sticks or in some ad-hoc, semi-comfortable position which is what the majority of my exper
  22. SandB is the dream worth every penny! I am still getting used to mine, being able to see really well is something of a novelty!
  23. I shoot sub-MOA in field conditions, and that really does count! Range work is also essential - how do you place a bullet accurately if you don't know drop and windage? How do you get those apart from shooting at targets? Deerstalker - as and when my 243 gets back I am quite happy to come up and prove that it knocks over deer just fine
  24. Cheers There are loads of 'em on this shoot, saw countless roe and 4 muntjac.
