  1. I have had several IR scopes. on my MTC Viper I found it useful because the ret is so fine. On the others, I didn't...
  2. Mentor simply has to be someone with some experience with what you want to do, so if the farmer has a centrefire rifle and shoots foxes, and he's willing, he'll do nicely. Alternatively do a DSC1, but they ain't cheap.
  3. Oh God, that wouldn't be the one the other side of town near the traffic lights now would it
  4. If you've got the land for it, put in for your 223 at first application. They will probably add mentoring as a condition so make sure you have someone lined up ready. Beyond that I can't see it being a problem if you have the land and some foxes for good reason!
  5. I think we might want to add age to this post, since my 15 years of shooting is over half my life, let's not discriminate against younger folk!
  6. First shots 15 years ago First air rifle 14 years ago First fac 13 years ago First CF 1.5 years ago Awaiting First SGC!
  7. The Ase mod is a very good one, had one but it was faulty. I chucked it as it came with a rifle and I was unaware of its value. Oops! The key with 22lr is a decent scope IMHO. It holds energy well so if you can hit stuff it's effective relatively far out.
  8. Don't use a Sak on a Hornet. The pressure of even that lowly CF will damage it/blow it to bits.
  9. That is the reason for a .22lr, stealth and silence for 99.99% of the time for rabbits and crow etc. but until i get enough money for a true dedicated fox calibre (a .223 is on my wish list) i may have to take a fox or two with the rifle i have. but as a Hiho say its bullet placement not power and i feel a damn sight more confident in the accuracy of the trustey eley subs. I was hoping (possibley in my nievity) that there was a high velocity round that was sufficiently accurate. mr.logic could you give me any advice on good silencer for .22lr. got about £60 to spend on one, might be willin
  10. Said this before, but in this day and age, 22LR = subsonic hunting tool for when silence is golden. If you want HV, HMR or WMR, since they give you the speed and keep some accuracy.
  11. I got my 243 back last week, been out in Malaysia this week so tonight was the first chance I had to see if it now shoots straight. Took it out this afternoon to see if it would group with 55gr Winchester stuff for foxes. Didn't have a scope I deemed worthy, just the one from my target rifle, which isn't needed until March. So I slapped that on beforehand, and then boresighted it when I got out to the ground this afternoon. Wasn't planning on lamping really but took the gear in case it performed well. 10 shots or so later it was shooting a 1 inch group (and that was with a called f
  12. Depends on the bullet weight like any gun. A 40gr .223 will be affected more than a 55gr obviously. I don't really know what to compare it with, but between the .222 and a .22-250 with a 50gr bullet, .22-250 being the one which bucks the wind the best. SS Actually it might well not be... 40gr is a ballistic tip, better coefficient than many 55gr bullets, so less wind affected.
  13. Good going How do you find the rifle, I was thinking of getting one?
  14. The 77/22 uses the same mag as the 10/22 - a stripable 10 shot rotary which sits flush to the stock. IMHO it's a very good magazine system, and of course you can get a 10/22 25-shot banana mag for it :D
  15. CZ's cheaper and shoots as straight. Nuff said. If they were the same price I'd buy the Ruger, every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Bigger mag, better stock, and I prefer the action, but that's a personal thing. But they're not the same price
  16. yep, the Sako is definitely worth having. Build quality is better, it's properly made, with different action lengths and far fewer cut corners. They feel solid and reliable. Tikkas shoot straight, handle well and have decent triggers, but they do feel cheap. CZ provides the quality feel of Sako for less money, but they're not as nice.
  17. The Tikkas are now coming s/c in the UK, they're ordering the MT variant with the short barrel, but in true style GMK don't know they're doing this! Beware the cut though, IIRC it's M14x1 not 1/2UNF so you have to get a mod with the right thread. Possible yes, and you might get lucky with stock, but likely it'll be an order-it-in job.
  18. 223 for barrel life, the other two won't last as long. 243 is OK with the heavier bullets but the light stuff is very fast. 223 is less severe but a heck of a step up from HMR on Charlie.
  19. I really like the Ruger 77/22 but to me it doesn't justify its price.
  20. Hornet, a wonderful calibre let down by lack of ammo. I might petition Hornady to sell cheaper 35gr Vmax... 22WMR for me every time too, just gotta get one!
  21. I have the T8-AR which is to a T8 what the P8 Compact is to the P8. Works very well, lightweight too. Sure it will rust in the end but it gets a liberal squirt of WD40 when it gets used. Fingers crossed!
  22. Me neither. Learn something new every day!
  23. It wouldn't surprise me that the Chinese eat fox, but it doesn't change the fact that it's f***ed up!
  24. What he said on the fox front! Scope-wise, you're gonna want about 10 on the magnification front so a 4-12 will be fine. Mildot reticle is also very useful, not especially cluttered with aiming points. The problem with the £300 mark is that it's basically a Bushnell 3200 at that price. They're duplex rets which don't suit the 22RF very well. So... either go down a bit, to MTC or Falcon, or go up a bit, to Bushnell 4200 or Leupold VX-III. MTC is a 3-12x44 Mamba or 4-16x50 Mamba. Falcon would be a 7.5x50, but the optics are better and I think you will be fine at night with that mag.
