The nice cheap Lyman one? If so this is good news
-
SS - what powder trickler do you have? I am having slight leakage with the Lee one, and a quick Google shows I am not alone. Time to change methinks...

There is no hard and fast rule to weather it will shoot or not from a factory rifle depends on each gun in question.... my .243 would never stabilise a 100g bullet but my mate would shoot them great both same guns... twist rate etc... Its a good cal. no doubt about it but the one shooting 3/4 inch at 100 i would leave, It should be shooting at least 1/2 inch in the right hands, so test fire if possible, good luck. That's with factory ammo though Snap, seemed OK to me tbh. Will check if I can test it though...

why dont you save some money and get the howa 204 that skanny is selling on the bbs. its a shooter, comes with mounts, dies, dewey rod, bore guide, and post to your rfd ! its doing under a inch at 200 yards so you cant moan at that ! all for £375 pound ! im sure he would take you out to shoot it to if you went to pick it up. I don't have firearms sales section on the BBS sadly, so didn't know. Tbh the shop in question is working hard for me so I think unless they take the piss at any stage they can keep some of my money at least.

Well the guy who is selling the Remington assures me that it will shoot the 40gr to 3/4 inch at 100 yards, so that should do I guess. My only worry was barrel life on this gun, I don't know how much ammo it's had, and even if I ask him it will be a (probably poor) guesstimate...

Right folks, quick one. As I have posted, I got a Howa in 204 which doesn't shoot 40 grain ammo. I sent it back to Highland Outdoors and progress hasn't been as quick as I'd hoped. Decision time on it is next week. If they haven't moved forward on getting this one fixed/replaced, I will have two options really: 1. a Howa in 243 2. the Remington 700 LVSF 204 Ruger I didn't get before, which is used. The Howa is new. I went with 204 Ruger because in theory it offers rabbit and fox control at 243 ranges, but with less powder, less noise and less recoil (which isn't a massive issue

Yes, but with a caveat. Expanding is OK, but bear in mind that anything over 3275 fps (IIRC) is too fast. so forget the 55, 58, 75gr ammo.

Just so happens I have one of these available right now... http://www.deben.com/optics/riflescopes/varmint_2.php The 4-16x44 version and sunshade, about 3 weeks old so virtually brand new, unmarked, box, instructions, got it as a temporary for my HMR... The very scope on the gun....also did this for me when I strapped it on the HMR...100 yards... Sensible offers can secure it!!! How come that one is being sold so soon?

I use Lee equipment to very good ends. I have a Lee Turret press, and powder measure, with Lyman scales. I haven't tried anything else so can't compare, but the resultant handloads work, and I'm loading 223 also.

For fox control, 50 or 40 be bullet is ideal and a 1:12 twist works well. 1:9 also good as it can go heavier but not worth worrying about in a sporting rifle. Cz 527 is excellent too, at least mine is.

Good going lads Need to get out myself this week...
-
Yes I've heard some horror stories of the Sportsman too, so thought it only fair to go on record and say they were good this time.
-
Resolved. Went to the Sportsman and received very good service. Scope swapped over, they didn't have another Meopta so I got a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x50 long range with Varmint Hunter reticle. Seems clear enough to me, just got to decide whether I use it for the 223 target rifle or the 204 fox gun... Hmmm....
-
Thanks mate, just called and they said if it's a fault then it should be swapped, being only 2 months old. Fingers crossed then!
-
I spoke to Sportsman the other day, they said they'd send it off and weren't happy when I said I didn't want that, so this could be fun
-
I didn't know that Cooper was making rifles in that calibre, although they still won't be cheap
-
Good going lads, bet that lot took some work to gralloch
-
Yep, looks like I'll take it back. Anyone know who is the importer for Meopta? I don't fancy a long wait so would be good to check service. TBH, Sportsman should swap it over, being Sale of Goods Act and all that...

17HMR really wasn't designed for shooting coyotes and foxes. Talk to your local firearms department, they might grant you HMR for fox but you will at least have to ask very nicely indeed. HMR is a bunny rabbit tool for longer range shooting. It holds up much better in the wind than the 22LR - bullet weight per se has very little to do with windage. Weight normally means a better ballistic coefficient which means it holds its energy, and thus velocity, better. This means there is less flight time, which in turn means there is less windage. HMR has a better bullet shape than 22LR, it is

Hmmm.. .High case pressures and expensive to get started being a wildcat and needing a custom barrel. I'd recommend 204 Ruger, but me and 'im aren't on the same page right now

Just sold one in 243. They're good. BUT Aluminium receiver, so not very strong for mounting scopes, in that it's easy to overtighten it and screw up (yes, guilty there). The trigger isn't adjustable to anything really nice, but might be OK depending on your tastes, it's certainly not a bad one. My rifle shot pretty well, it was pretty accurate with most ammunition, but it felt cheap. Balance on it was good though, despite being quite lightweight. They also have interchangeable barrels, but for me that's a gimmick. I guess my overall opinion is that they're decent tools, but bet

I have a Meopta R1 4-16x44 which I bought on 2nd Jan. Went on the 243 initially without any problems, but that got sold so it went on my CZ 223. That rifle is normally flawless but had shifting zero problems. Moved it off there and onto the Howa 204, where it did not have sufficient elevation adjustment for a zero at 100 yards. Tried it on my Remington SPS Tactical 223, and it zeroed up OK this evening but only has 6MOA of adjustment left at a 100 yard zero. Mounts on the Howa/Remington are Leupold Standard ones and all tight. The CZ uses a Leupold mount for CZ527. I put a Leup

FAC Variation for a None Existing Gun
Mr_Logic replied to lgray88's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Your friend can apply to the firearms department, stating that he has discovered this rifle, for a temporary permit for the weapon in question. You then apply for 1 x 303 rifle, and then you can have it from him. He fills in your ticket with the authority to possess as the temporary permit, and everyone is happy. The .303 is a perfectly legal weapon so long as it's a standard Lee Enfield type of rifle - i.e. not a Bren gun or something! Many people shoot them at Bisley and other ranges quite happily. Scarily, even after all these years they go bang, and you can still get factory ammo f -
So it's a fantastic group, and the rifle shoots great, but if it didn't produce groups like that you'd be miffed, right My old Sako 75 Varmint in 22-250 used to do similar (not sure exactly at 200 because I only fired targets with it that far a couple of times) - if it wasn't a thumbnail you were grumpy, and that was with Remington factory ammo. A fantastic rifle for sure - if it hadn't been so heavy I'd have kept it. TBH, I wish I had really anyway, it was that nice!
-
223 will do that job nicely. Suggest you go for softpoint or certain hollow point bullets though, ballistic tip = messy deer. At least it does with muntjac anyway. 1:9 twist would allow heavier ammo which might be better too.
