first time shooting, rather proud of myself
Mr_Logic replied to JPTfellterrier's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
No it's not. It is NOT illegal to shoot a firearm into trees, there is no law whatsoever against it. It is pretty silly, unless you're very remote. Remember, a 22LR bullet can go a mile with the correct angle and is still dangerous when it comes back down. If you happen to have a mile of clear background, there is nothing whatever stopping you from shooting upwards. But for the rest of us, avoid, unless you have a VERY thick tree and your target is right slap bang in the middle of it. -
You did answer my q. 223 for daytime shooting, with 400 quid to spend = Nikon Monarch or Bushnell 4200. I would make sure you have 12 power, 40 front end should be enough but you may see benefits from the 50 at dawn. Either scope will do what you need.

What do you want this scope to do?!

Advise on shortening my .22lr barrel ?
Mr_Logic replied to mike white's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Right let's not get ahead of ourselves with talk of barrel length. We're talking about a 22LR, so the powder burn is basically complete very early, there's hardly any powder. Therefore it's personal preference, so if you want a short barrel go for one. Some like the balance, others prefer a longer barrel. I'm on the 16" camp for rimfire barrels, very handy and I like the balance. -
Shall I turn my 204 into a 22-250?
Mr_Logic replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well,I called shops, they all said no to that Howa, apart from one low part ex offer, so I'm stuck with it for the time being... -
Tried reloading same bullet with Varget, Start load as per Hodgdon was 24gr on trying to seat bullet found too much powder and compressed load. How was it for the 23.5 ok? Benchmark is a fine powder so there is plenty of case left with 23.5gr. My 308 load of 48gr of Varget is compressed though, absolutely fine to compress it...

You won't make much of a dent in that price, not with the new dollar rate... they were 550-600 before.

I'm going to confess to being a berk. I had washed these cases and (I thought) thoroughly dried them before loading. But they couldn't have been as I pulled the duff bullets off and powder was clumped. Primer had gone, but no ignition of the powder charge. Which leads me on to this one... since then the brass has been cleaned again, and, not wanting this again (I need to get them loaded once more for some actual shooting, not just load testing!) I have tumble-dried the cases. Slapped them in t'other half's washing bag (it's for horse kit, to keep the hair out of your clothes) and t

Change in vertical gives me winage change as well.
Mr_Logic replied to clivej's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
At 200 yards, any cant will affect the scope, and could easily knock it off this much. It is also possible that the scope is duff - have you previously proven it on another rifle? -
23.5gr Hodgdon Benchmark, CCI Primer, COL 2.235", Federal brass. 68gr Hornady BTHP bullet. And yep, they did shoot well

Shall I turn my 204 into a 22-250?
Mr_Logic replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I have just changed the primer from S & B to CCI, and gone from seating on or near the lands to the standard 2.25" COL, and it has definitely improved. Still think that, given the availability of all things .22, I might switch. Certainly, groups were good enough today that it's shooting sufficiently well, but I've done so much thinking about this I am almost convinced of 22-250 anyway. But like I said, I suspect I'll give it a bit yet, too much in the way of 204 bits to use first. But at least the powders for 204 seem to work well in 22-250 (alliant stuff anyway) -
It is often recommended, and required in Scotland. Down in England, you can get away with less. A 95gr bullet in the right place is going to work just fine. The CZ550 is a very good rifle too.

Shall I turn my 204 into a 22-250?
Mr_Logic replied to Mr_Logic's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
It's the most infuriating rifle ever. I worked a night last night so I've had the day today, got out with the 204 again. It shot good groups with 40 grain Noslers and good groups with the 32 grain Nosler also. Need to back off a touch with the 32gr Sierras as the primers died big style (but at least they went bang this time!). Tbh, before these loads I would definitely have got rid but it seems to be pretty good - need to measure these groups but they look about right. Given the cost to change I expect I will at least shoot off the components I currently hold first, and see how -
Right then folks, I am having a nightmare time trying to decide whether to turn my 204 into a 22-250 or not. Initially as I posted, I had lots of problems with it, not shooting factory Remington. Then it came back complete with new stock and a recrown (a month to do this!) and still didn't shoot them. I tried some reloads, and the best group I got was .9", which wasn't exactly awesome. I then got yet more powder and yet more bullet heads, and found that: It shoots the 32 sierras very nicely (apart from the odd flyer, .3") It can just about shoot a 40gr Nosler given some reload

I had the same problem with about 3 or 4 different powders - took an assorted (but labelled!) box of stuff to try. Looking like the primer then. My only thought was that maybe the pocket could be oversize internally or something, but they all seated properly, with the correct level of force needed. Guess I will have to try some of those primers in a 223 load and see what happens...

On the left, a duff one, on the right, one that worked. Any ideas?

I was out this morning with the 204, trying to find a load it likes. Got roughly 35-50% of my round as dud, which is obviously very worrying. I checked the primer, they've bit hit good and hard by the firing pin. Looks like they're seated in the pocket correctly too. So, could this be naff brass (it's Remington) or is it most likely just a duff batch of primers, so chuck them and get some fresh ones? Will post pictures of successful rounds and the misfires later, but just rushing off to Bisley now! Any help gratefully received

I know. I was implying that since the 243 is so much better as an all rounder, then the 308 isn't really... Simply because it's rubbish at fox shooting. You don't need all the power, so you end up with a recoiling rifle which has a large amount of drop, when you could have a smaller one which is much more effective, without recoil, and with a flatter trajectory and much better vermin bullet choice. You could use the 308 on foxes, but you *could* use a 300 Win Mag too, so is that an all-rounder? For me, the true all rounder is good enough at any discipline to be recommended in its o

I have a 700 in 223, shoots very nicely indeed, not ammo fussy at all, so long as it's expensive!
-
I don't buy overkill either, dead is dead. But, for long range shooting 243 is better, for foxes 243 is better. So for the all rounder crown, of the two, then my money is on 243. But the fact remains that either calibre is a versatile, effective one.

Howas are threaded 1/2 UNF in light barrels, 5/8 in the heavy ones. I've got a light one now and had a heavy one before, both have moderators and came screw cut.

Tell you for free, if they took my FAC for something like that, I'd see them in court PDQ! Good point! But only if your ticket said "vermin" which is challengeable. .22rf that is, hornet be ok. Hornet would only be OK if conditioned for fox. This is the thing - it matters not a jot what calibre you use for the job, it's the wording on the ticket that counts, and that's the whole pointlessness of it all

Personally I'd steer clear of Howa, I have one in 204 which I'm not very happy with. It went to Highland Outdoors for work and their customer service took piss poor to new levels, when I rang to ask what was happening I was basically told to f*** off. There may have been some issues with the dealer and Highlands' communication, but either way their treatment of me and the 4 weeks taken simply to test and restock a rifle is not on, given that the rifle was bought new and I could have demanded a refund (wish I had tbh) Alternatives: T3, but the hunter not the Lite, because the Lite'

T8s do rust, mine's got some in and I only got it in December last year. Keep adding WD40 spray, that's the manufacturer guidelines as published, and as said already, contact Jackson Rifles when it corrodes for a replacement.
