Reduce barrel from 25" to 20" in .243 - Bad idea ???

Almost all my shots are off a bipod too, it's the carrying of said rifle that makes me have a short barrel or light barrel variant for field use... -

I think you might have missed the point here. You obviously need good shooting skills in both target and field applications. The key point is that in the field you: 1. Often have to carry a rifle for some considerable time 2. Sometimes make long standing shots 3. Generally do not fire many rounds in quick succession. For range-based target work you: 1. Generally fire prone 2. Never make standing shots (obviously excepting gallery etc - I'm talking precision rifle) 3. Quite often fire many rounds in a relatively short space of time. All of this means that, for range work, yo -
I've got an old deactivated Chassepot rifle in my loft, well, my parents' loft, it has iron sights to 1000m, and was made 1871.

Loud mouthed ignorant dickhead. Next thing will be some twat claiming that the curvature of space in the region of large masses explains why he can't find his prick with a telescope. Ho Hum it is to laugh. . . . Ric LMAO

if the antis seen that they'd have a field day Why exactly? Because a rabbit got splattered? Nature does things far worse, it's really not a big deal. And anyway, this is a hunting site, so the antis can f*** off. If you post stuff on their sites, THEN they can moan.

Are you talking 17 Rem or 17 Hmr?

To hit a circular target, irons are very effective. Certainly there were a lot of v-bulls shot with them at 1000 when I was at Bisley last week!

Ric you are correct. Increased muzzle jump, muzzle flash and decreased velocity are the result. You do gain balance though, and a moderator cancels the jump/flash to a large extent. It is indeed possible to change powders and get around the problem. Sadly, and I have limited experience here, you cannot do this for all bullet weights. 243 is a real problem because you need the heavy bullets for deer, and then you are using slower powders. My 223s both have short barrels, so I use Vit N130 and deliver good velocities with it, because it's fast burning. If I use a slower powder, I'm 200fps down o -
LOL! My other half shoots, so she knows what stuff costs...

Yes, but to a slightly shorter range. Remember that a bullet loses velocity and energy relatively quickly, so bullet design is not for muzzle energy, but energy at typical shooting ranges. In a 243, which has lots of penetration and requires good bullet placement on larger animals, the effect is minimal because penetration is still there with a slightly lower velocity, and good placement is still required. -

I would expect velocity loss to be around 200fps. Deker's short barreled Tikka is short of velocity that much against published loads. Equally balance and handling are much better. You should not lose accuracy, just velocity. -
OK. This leaves you with a dilemma. I note from your other thread this is for foxes, deer and targets in the future. Therein lies the problem. Foxes and deer = shorter barrel for balance with a moderator and light weight. Targets = longer barrel for powder burn & better velocity. Now, there are some sites on the web which suggest 308 doesn't get affected by a longer barrel, but the F/TR boys shoot 30-inch, and they get better velocity than I can from my 26", so it's got to matter somewhere! For target work, unless you're buying a rifle which is a specific target rifle (generall

What's the length of barrel on that Tikka?

15 Year Old Shot Himself In The Foot
Mr_Logic replied to whippeter69's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not being funny, but who the f*** puts a loaded weapon in a moving vehicle? It's asking for trouble. Personally I think if you're old enough to shoot, then you are old enough to know better than that. -
That'll do you fine. You may find you need more elevation to get to 700, but being a Remington you simply buy a 20 MOA base and job done
-
OK, what's the calibre and make of the rifle in question?
-
Agreed, although Nikon Monarch or Bushell 4200 are pretty close to that price range, 50 quid or so more. Either would do nicely.
-
What kind of distance are the targets? I'd say Nikon Monarch, but the elevation adjustment is lacking for long range. Otherwise they fit the bill well - bright, clear optics and well made.
-
Velocity does have an effect, because for a given bullet length, you can get more revolutions out of a given twist rate if you push the bullet faster. However, in any given calibre the difference is not generally enough to change whether or not the rifle will shoot a given length. Tikka Varmint = either 1:12 or 1:8 barrel, if it's the 1:8 then you should be fine from 40 right up to 75. Deker has the Lite with the 1:8 barrel and we have seen all of them shoot nicely at 200 yards at Bisley.
-
Unfortunately Mr A, you are wrong here. As Jonty says, heavy bullets just happen to be long ones, bullet weight means diddly squat in terms of stabilisation. The longer (and thus heavier) bullets retain energy better by having more momentum and a sleeker, more aerodynamic shape, which makes them better for long range shooting. That's why they're designed. Then you need to get a barrel designed to shoot them, and that barrel needs a fast twist to spin the long bullet.

about to buy a new rifle in 308
Mr_Logic replied to crumblyned's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I wouldn't use either rifle for stalking really as they're both heavy, obviously target scope and mod add a lot to that as well. Sako is a much better rifle, but Tikka and Sako DO use the same barrels. Sako has a proper short action though, Tikka is all bolt stop on a magnum action. This means that the Sako is better balanced as the action/barrel sit back in the stock. Sako's stock is also much better. Glass is really important though, so it is a tough call as both rifles will shoot very straight. I think my money would be with the Tikka, unless I had good glass already and could a -
Last time I checked, 243 was deer legal in England with all bullet weights since you need 1700 ft lbs at the muzzle and 240 or more calibre. It is load dependent, but can easily be done with the light bullets too.

Are you walking around with the rifle or using from a vehicle? The SPS Tactical is borderline for a walkabout rifle; the LTR is heavier still. I am of course including scope and bipod and moderator in this. On its own the SPS-T is a decent enough weight - I don't think it's heavy. But with the bits added, it takes its toll after a few hours, even with a decent sling. I would have a look at CZ's Varmint Kevlar or Laminate. Similar cost to the LTR AFAIK, but the barrel profile is a bit less. So long as you're not trying to shoot longer ranges, the short barrel will be fine. The CZ has a

Have an SPS tactical which is the same barreled action but in a cheapo (Hogue) stock. It's a good rifle, shoots straight. I wouldn't have another because the barrel is so short that it makes getting good velocities a pain. That only matters as I am shooting targets - it's killed its fair share of foxes and not one argued about the missing velocity. What do you plan to do with it?
-
223 and 308 don't have the same trajectory, 223 is some 600 fps quicker than 308. The calibre for doing both is 243, I actually said very likely to your poll because I didn't read where you said you JUST wanted fox control on 308. It's pointless. The 308 is not intended, generally, for vermin control. The heavy bullets fly too slowly for decent flat trajectory, and the light ones have a crap BC and don't go out very far (again, not flat, anyway). 243 on the other hand kills every UK deer happily, and its fox control credentials are unquestioned. Calibre of choice, look no further.
