  1. Snap, where are you getting thos figures? Hodgdon's max load, as Coldweld said is 25.3gr, and I know for a fact that from a short barrel that gives well under the published figure of 3200fps.
  2. Indeed, but you do lose a shit load of velocity in a 223 with a short barrel. I know, I've tried and compared with different barrel lengths and the same load.
  3. Well, I've spent a fortune on loading bits and bobs since I started, so I don't think I can say it's saved me money. But it's opened my eyes - now I know the accuracy the rifles can produce, the velocities they reach etc, and that data means more clean kills, and at longer ranges. And, getting out on 600 yard and 1000 yard targets, respectable scores for a beginner! So I wouldn't go back to factory, expense or otherwise!
  4. As Arveyboy says, the only way to know is to chrono your particular setup (well worth doing - chrono is about a hundred quid and worth every penny). But, you are almost in luck. I made up a load with max H335 and 55gr V-max from my 20" barrel SPS tactical and it was about 3000-odd, maybe somewhere to 3100 - got the data somewhere but am at work. Hodgdon says minimum load is around the 3000 mark so I suspect you will get from the top end of 28 to about 3 or just under with that load. But chrono it - you get your extreme spread, averages and standard deviation, and they are all useful t
  5. The CZ527 trigger is great, if you adjust it right. Grab the manual from CZ's website, it shows you which screws do what. Take the overtravel right out, and then get the sear so there's no/very little creep. Weight of pull = adjust to liking, but when you're done, you should end up with a crisp, light trigger. Very nice!!
  6. 22 Hornet is the only realistic calibre for the role. 17 Rem still annihilates a rabbit, but 22 Hornet doesn't, with the right bullet. You will need to handload it, but it makes Hornet cheaper than HMR with considerably more capability, so really worth the hassle.
  7. They are very handy indeed. Yes, mainly health and safety, but you also get to hear the bullet hit the deer, and that tells a lot about whether you got the shot right. As for muzzle brakes, evil things, for those around you anyway!
  8. I use AA2460 with a 168gr softpoint, it's the cheapest of the cheap, but my cz 550 puts them sub moa easily so that will do me!
  9. Not sure about the screws, but H is indeed up, T is down.
  10. I shoot a CZ 527 synthetic, which shoots the load I use to about half an inch, considerably less on a good day. I use a Leupold Mark 2 6-18x40 at the moment, but that's meant for the rimfire, want to put a Zeiss on there if I ever save up enough money! Target shooting with the other half costs a FORTUNE!
  11. They're OK. Mine's faulty, but optically it's OK. Personally I wouldn't get another. If you're just shooting deer, Bushnell might be a better bet, depends on exactly what you want out of it.
  12. Fair enough but another contributor to this forum asked about getting a 308 for fox and was told NO. If this guy with the new FAC is legal for deer then why is he asking damn fool questions about sniper rifles? One or t'other but not both. You ought to realise that Mr L. Long range target rifle = 26" heavy barrel. Deer stalking gun = 21-22" barrel max. Anyway whatever let's not fall out! ATB to y'all Ric I feel the need to go and shoot a deer with my target rifle... If you ask for a 308 JUST for fox, you will be told no. If you ask for a 308 for DEER and fox, you will be told yes, accordi
  13. Why should there be a mention of dsc? There is no requirement for DSC for a 308 for deer. I don't have it, and I have 308 for deer and fox.
  14. Unscrew the end cap, remove the interior bit, dump into a bowl of washing up solution, wash. Dry. Put back together. You may find the end cap is incredibly tight after use though...
  15. Long range targets, done seriously, = a separate rifle. You can combine them but you basically just take your target rifle out after deer, with a different bullet. You are right to think of the 'sniper' type weapons for this role. Tactical rifles will have a medium/heavy barrel and to 800 yards a good one will do decently on paper. F/TR folks like their 30 inch barrel for velocity reasons to 1000 yards though, so one to be aware of. You will also need a good scope, Leupold or Nightforce are very popular for the target work due to their internal adjustments, they have good range and are
  16. Very good shooting. The 204 is a brilliant rabbit round for long range, put to good use.
  17. Mr L, Your statement is at odds with the policy of West Mercia Police. Mine is what they, not you, class as an open ticket. I am afraid that you are wrong about the interpretation of the law. All police authorities have the capability in law of introducing conditions and stipulations of their own choosing to apply to FAC's that they grant. Of the six other FAC's I have been able to look at so far, all of which are worded the same, all the recipients were told that they were open certificates. I will make further investigations to see if they are not telling the truth. ft
  18. Steyr, can you please put down the whole wording of your condition, as this reads very strangely to me...
  19. i have 3 guns on my fac, point 6 7 and 8 listed below 6 22rf.................. on any suitable land over which the holder of this certificate has permission to shoot with this class of firearm............ 7 the firearms and ammunition shall be used for target shooting on ranges suitable for the safe use of that class of firearm and with adequate finacial arrangements in place to meet any injury and damage claim. 8 223 basiclly the same as 22rf there is no mention of my 270, where can i use this? do you think point 7 relates to this? does this mean i need t
  20. Steyr, Are you happy that some bloke down the gunshop knows what your firearms department means by its conditions? Would it not be better to ask your FEO and get the full and complete information you need? My FAC states: "6. The 6.5x55mm Rifle and 6.5x55 Sound moderator and ammunition shall be used for deer/fox control and for zeroing on ranges, or land deemed suitable by the Chief Officer of Police for the area where the land is situated and over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot" That is the position of West Mercia, why not ask what your police authorities position
