Jamie, I disagree completely about light bullets being with a .22CF. I do agree the 70gr bullet is a better choice for 243, but there is a point in the 55s. If your rifle shoots them accurately, they can be easily pushed to a smidgen under 4000fps, with a BC of .276. That pisses all over a 22-250. Don't get me wrong, I've nothing against the 22-250, it has a good velocity and smaller powder charge, and the bullets are more plentiful and varied, and it works out cheaper. But if you want really fast and high BC from a factory calibre, 243 is where it's at.
-
What are you using your .308 for? Lapua brass is consistent, but it's not going to make much difference unless you are exacting the tiniest bits of difference. Some prvi brass is going to be cheaper and just as good for most applications.
-
I'd stick with the .308, it's heavy enough to do the business on anything you like, it's easy to load for, factory ammo is plentiful too. In terms of rifle, Tikka T3 Hunter, with Schmidt & Bender 6x42 or 8x56. You can spend more if you like, but that should be a very nice setup for many years.
-
Don't want to shorten a T3 Hunter IMHO. With 243 you do lose a lot of velocity as the barrel gets shortened, so much so that with some loads they're not then deer legal. I'd leave alone personally.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the Bergers - was tempted to get some of those the other day...

Which scope for my new .223 cz rifle?
Mr_Logic replied to jimmy.jim86's topic in Reloading and Gun Maintenance
The CZ is a good rifle, mine is excellent. With scopes, you need to beware a little. I've not been able to get Leupolds on there with the right eye relief, just about got my 6.5-20 on OK, but it's only just. Tried a Nikon Monarch, which was great but bolt got in the way. S & B was OK though. -
You've lost me as usual. You said it was impossible, I'm saying it's not! You really are full of it.
-
Hunter Zero - You say that I am full of shit? What exactly do you mean? That I can't fit 52.0 gr of H414 in a 243 case? Well I can. It's absolutely full so I drop it down to 51.5gr so it's easier to load. You appear to imply that the rifle will explode if I shoot it? Well it doesn't, neither does someone else's rifle who has tried this load. He says it's by far the best ammo he's tried for his rifle. He did say we'd get pictures of the groups next time he's out so with a bit of luck he'll remember the camera. So exactly am I full of shit? You just make yourself look stupid, arguing that

hz, did I ever talk about over-stabilisation? nope.... I said a bullet could break up if spun too hard, and this is rare but can happen, which is why I said it was unlikely with a Nosler ballistic tip. Regarding H414 in a 243 case, 52 gr is possible and I've done it and the rifle is still here. It did top 4000 occasionally but averages a fraction under. Quickload may disagree, but I couldn't give a flying f*** because I've done it, and it's not caused any issues. Certainly not a mild load but there are no problems with it in my rifle.
-
A fast twist will also stabilise the lighter bullets, but there is sometimes a danger that if you spin the bullet too hard, if the jacket is very thin it could break up. Not likely on a Nosler ballistic tip.

The Tories didn't ban .22 handguns - that was Labour, and it was the very first thing Blair did.

Clint, unfortunately you don't know the rifle in question and haven't bothered to check. Mick, the two rifles in question are a LONG way from apples to apples. The X-bolt is a sporting rifle, designed to shoot deer. The Savage 12 F/TR is a target rifle of sufficient quality to win a world championship. Hence there are many differences. You say about shooting long range targets - there is no comparison. The Browning won't do it to any level, and the Savage will do it very well indeed. You get a 30" heavy barrel capable generally of well under sub 0.5 MOA groups, a heavy, well b
-
Just to check, are you comparing this Savage with a Browning X-bolt?
-
Tom, you have two problems here. First is the twist rate of the .243" barrel, to duplicate .222 trajectories you will need a 1in12 twist to handle 58 grain V-max. Then you have to be 'deer' legal, 1700ft-lb muzzle energy. This can only really be achieved using 75 grain bullets, and there is a third problem there are not 75 grain bullet designed specifically for deer shooting, so and NOT that I recommend this, the only option would be to use a 75 grain V-max. This can be driven to deer legal velocities (3195 fps) but isn't ideal on anything bigger than Roe, and IMHO not good for Muntjac. A 75 g

there is no difference between Hungarian and German Schmidt - even S & B say so themselves as I asked! However 6x42 on a 223 is IMHO the wrong mag, I much prefer a variable up to about 12x since 223 targets tend to be foxes and rabbits, not deer, and they're at longer ranges than the average deer too.

17 rem or 22-250 or 233 wssm
Mr_Logic replied to death boy's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I seem to remember Hornets having some sort of feed problems, hense the Hornet K. They can be fiddle to reload too, thin necks. Hornet has no feed issues, reloading is fine too. Lovely little round. -
Yeah I think he should keep quiet that HMR is working...

How loud is loud when it comes to centerfire!
Mr_Logic replied to pandamonia's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I;ve got an ASE CQB on my 223, and also used on my Hornet. It's louder than HMR, and always will be. My Hornet on the other hand, isn't - Deker and I tested this. If you want to talk loud, try a short barrel 243 or 22-250 without mod, that's loud... (and there are louder, but I've not personally owned them). One guy down the range had a .300 Win Mag pistol which he was shooting at 500 yards, and that was f****ing loud! -
Take this up with BASC. You are entitled by law to a sensible firearm for the job. For fox shooting, the HO guidelines recommend a centrefire. You have proven good reason and have sufficient land - since each case must, by law, be judged on its own merit, you should be granted a centrefire.
-
HZ my post was the way it was because a lead ban, or not, does not affect the advice of BASC's lawyers on this issue. It is irrelevant. I also doubt that they are pushing hard for this as all the members will be against it. Whether they are or not, does not change the advice about the topic we're debating. You say you'd use these bullets apart from your incorrect viewpoint on the law. Can I suggest that you contact Basc and get that in writing to cover your arse, and then go use these bullets? They really are quite good.
-
Hmr works well in the head of Charlie at sensible ranges, but the sensible choice is Hornet. Costs the same if you reload, similar trajectory. Same noise level too, but a lot more lethality and reliability. Gotta love it. Although... Right now the cheapest rabbit tool I have is my 243, due to some cheap components...

er, yeah, whatever...

Shotgun for not very strong lady!!!
Mr_Logic replied to ruthi's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I do agree - plenty of 20 bore shotguns out there that won't fit either. 12 bore with 26 or 28 inch barrel(s) and a shortened stock should do nicely for smaller ladies. If you shoot o/u then use 21g carts on clays - you will still break the clay if you get your bit right. As for Charlotte Kerwood, let's just say she's not the svelte figure you'd expect from an athlete and leave it there! -
i've done it before, but if it's pissing down I opt to stay in - saves me a whole load of time cleaning kit, too.

I thought Lanber have a 5 year warranty? Generally they'll replace with equivalent new model, but I guess this is GMK we're talking about... If you don't want to use GMK, then I guess you're looking at a Browning really. Semi auto at that, for a decent shotgun. Or you could get an SX3. First port of call - very angry phone call to GMK and take it from there...
