oh I dunno, you could use an old BSA at a pinch - at least they're accurate!

I agree, I don't see your age being a problem, you just need to make sure you don't get stereotyped and I think you'll be fine as you are aware of the perceptions that can happen, and the ways to fight them. Good luck with it, but I doubt you'll need it!

With one of my landowners, I am very lucky - took my old 22-250 out for a couple of afternoons of zeroing/testing. No mod and close to houses so it annoyed them, landowner basically said "Well you're doing me a favour keeping an eye on the land and keeping the vermin down, they can f*** off". And she's pretty forceful so she'd say that! I made a point of getting something with a moderator in the spirit of compromise, but it didn't stop me getting notes on the windscreen telling me to go to Iraq if I enjoyed shooting so much. Ah f*** 'em, just gotta play enough politics to keep the landowne

would you buy a second hand rifle?
Mr_Logic replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Sportsman are the UK disty for Steyr. Which means if they sell you one of those retail they make a LOT more margin than if they sell you a Tikka. So I always preface any conversation about rifles with "I am not interested in Steyr" And STILL they try to sell me a Steyr!! -
To them I would say they are ANIMALS, and as such we can't ask them nicely to behave sensibly and comply with the law, so they must be shot. Since they are against animal experimentation we cannot develop a device to give us mind control on foxy and bunny, so we must use our existing device to remove the mind from the animal instead!

Indeed, it all depends if the clerk who works on your application has borrowed the communal brain cell that day! Edit: One thing I will say is while the knowledge is lacking and the policies are poor, they do try to provide an efficient service, in that they are courteous and will if asked very nicely go out of their way to get things sorted in the end. But the policies really are daft... -

HUnter Zero and I are in total agreement, for once I would echo pretty much everything he said, and I wouldn't touch that aged CZ with a barge pole. A second hand scope is near worthless. You've no way to check that it actually works, not even get a good idea beforehand, so basically I'd leave it unless it's something like a Schmidt, Swaro or Zeiss, that you can get fixed if it's not right. Next we come to the rifle... Agricultural, are CZ's. There's nothing wrong with that, I own 2. I had the CZ550 in 308 which I just sold, nothing wrong with it but I didn't get on with the balance e -
My problem with antis is that they think because they disagree they've a right to stop us shooting - why can't they just disagree?! We're not hurting them, and as has been mentioned they'd better be bloody vegetarian if they start on at me. It REALLY annoys me, more than pretty much anything else, EXCEPT that the Government condones this persecution! We as a minority surely have the same right as other minorities - if you got as much abuse for being black for example, the abuser would be in court.

How dare you shoot the bottom one! It's still got its spots on! :D

As the nodding dog would say, "oh yes!"

Yep, I just had a good look at the regulations, it is specific to shotgun in there. So unless he can provide another set of regs or an Act of Parliament, it's legal! Canada goose surely qualifies as vermin anyway, since it is now listed on the general license along with crows etc. Now, if I was an FEO and someone asked me for HMR specifically for geese, I wouldn't grant it but that it is because of the Reason We're Not Allowed to Discuss!

Sound Moderators, are they really required?
Mr_Logic replied to andyf's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Round my way, the best thing about a moderator is it allows you to shoot a rifle and not have as many people complaining at you! There are houses within unmoderated earshot of all my permissions, and with a moderator they barely hear a thing. Still the odd grumble, but it's a grumble, not a stand-up row. Moderators can be badly balanced behemoths, or they can be lightweight and effective. Key is getting the right one! A new market, and many ignorant customers. There are many piss-takes on price, but ASE or a P8 compact work pretty well. These new titanium moderators promise much, be intere -

Good and bad there! I've had good experiences with Thames Valley, and bad ones. Some people want to be helpful, others don't. Overall quite frustrating at times but not in the Shit League of things I read about on forums! -
No, I don't state that at all. I said I only take a shot when I can be CONFIDENT of making a clean kill. Nothing in shooting is certain, and for that eventuality I prefer a semi auto. I'd have one in .223 as well if the law permitted it. The second shot might be harder, or it might not, all depends on the reaction. Since it costs me nothing to have the facility available, it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. HUnter Zero - Right conditions - calm day, good supported shot preferably prone from a bipod at a fox who has frozen and isn't just looking aroun
-
I would get .223 instead of .222, much easier to get the right rifle. Woollyback is pretty close for me, certainly the CZ and Howa I'd have, but in 243, hmm... I'd have something with a proper barrel. Remington SPS would be my choice. Lightweight, well balanced, good length barrel for decent velocity, and faster twist so better for heavy deer bullets.
-
I think we're arguing about semantics here. General fox control does not necessarily equal long range shots. You just have to know the limitations! I would take a .22 out for general foxing if I had nothing else to use, and I'd shoot 'em at 100 yards in the right conditions too, because I can make that shot. If I'm not confident I wouldn't take it. In addition, I use a semi auto .22, because should it fail to stop quite hard enough the first time round (applies to rabbits too - shots on windy days can go awry) I can quickly and without loss of sight picture take the second shot. So it

Do me a favour - send me some info about these new laws, am curious as this is the first I have heard of it. Regarding the Red Stag - the whole point is that Deker doesn't buy the presence of said beast, not that other deer aren't there. And as for pandering to the antis, ah f**k 'em, they'll get us in the end anyway because of the fascist police state we're determined to create in the name of security, so we may as well have some distinctly un-PC stuff in the meantime!
-
Anyone who has used the .22rf for any length of time knows it capabilities. As a general fox tool the .22rf is useless, with the exception of close range shooting. There is no need to debate it, it's common as muck knowledge. John The 22RF is absolutely not useless as a fox tool! In the open country it is yes, but when you're talking about small holdings with chickens and neighbours that don't like noise, what would you use instead? What about near farms, where noise disturbs the animals, or a situation like I have had where I need to control foxes near horses in stables because the ot

Better balanced, at least with varmint barrel, in the 16" version. I've sold some rifles I regretted selling over the years, but my CZ 452 in HMR, 16" varmint barrel, is right at the top of the list.

Bisley Range Regs
-
Yes it can be done, but as Jamie says it's a lot of grief. You'd only do it for a different bullet anyway, and with the 30gr V-max about to hit out shores, why not just use that? Hornet would be the way to go if you want a low power reloadable round.
-
I read the Bisley range regs, it does not say either way, therefore, for Bisley, no regulation stops you.
-
Mine used to like the AE 50gr hollow points, or anything expensive if I couldn't get them.
-
No regulations say that you may not, so there's no problem with using it. You are not generally allowed to for competition though, since the purely target folks can't buy it...
-
Depends which bullet you use. I do tend to use a more expensive bullet, but for just occasional deer work, in 243 a 100gr SP is fine, cost £19 per 100 (midway), Powder at roughly 18p and 3p for a primer. Don't include the brass, although it would only add a penny or two.
